Some of you already know, but at 4 AM yesterday morning the result of two days worth of downpouring had advanced to our doorstep. At 6 our house began to take on water and we evacuated. We crossed through water that came up to my chest (I'm 6'5") and made it to the mouth of our neighborhood where we went to a shelter. We were there for the better part of the morning before my aunt and uncle came and picked us up. This morning the waters receded enough that we were able to back and scope the damage and do what needed to be done around the house such as upright the overturned appliances and document damage as well as pull essentials.

Honestly, we got pretty lucky. Water only came up to about 90 inches and while most the furniture and all of the flooring will have to be gutted, most valuables (including our rabbit) were untouched by the water. I lost my XBOX, Blu-Ray player, and a few records that I valued highly but other than that, my room was good.

But what's hurting us the most right now is that all of our cars are shot. Most of them have full coverage but it's still a huge loss. But things are just things and can be replaced, our whole family including our fur babies are safe. Some people were not so lucky.

And this isn't a case of Louisiana's geography working against itself, this was a record setting flood. I could post heartbreaking images all day, I've seen 500 within the last 24 hours, each worse than the last, but this sums up what happened the best:

You don't have to be a meteorologist to know that the difference between 51 and 58 feet is a hell of a lot more than 20 and 27.

Now I'm not here for sympathy, I've received so much of that in the past day, but to ask you to donate to the relief fund. And honestly, monetary donations are less desired than physical donations. Right now, people need a fresh change of clothes and blankets more than they need money. I'm sure you have a bag or pile of clothes that you don't wear anymore, dropping them off would be crucial. Every little bit helps. But if you feel the need to donate money, text the Red Cross at 90999.

My concern here is that Livingston Parish and East Baton Rouge is not the metropolitan area that New York or Chicago and attention to the issues here just aren't viewed as important. I have some gripes with LP but it will always be home to me and have a place in my heart, and the greater Baton Rouge community still has wounds from the Alton Sterling and police shootings that took place last month. This is our lowest point in over a decade but if I know me people, we will recover.
Is insurance going to cover your xbox? I have an extra xbox one I was going to sell but if you are going to be without your xbox I would be happy to send it to you, free of charge.

Thanks y'all, for the offers of items and of encouragement. This website really is the best. For someone who has never been short with his words, now I am because I can't find to right ones to express my gratitude for the well wishes and thoughts.

If you feel the need to donate, The Red Cross has has set up a direct donation line to Louisiana by texting LAFLOODS to 90999. I'm told this will be a $10 charge on your phone bill. If money can't be spared, and I have been there before, thoughts have never been turned down.

Today, the recovery process began in earnest for my family as we began to square away the legalities the situation presents as well as the other major details before starting to gut the house of anything that holds mold or mildew, which is about 80% of our furniture. Another 17% percent or so are ruined but do not hold mold or mildew while a few bed frames are salvageable.

All the while we were gone I kept saying "things are just things and things can be replaced, but damn y'all, that's a lot of things to replace.

And this isn't a personal tragedy. 95% percent of Watson is going through this.

I'm sorry for you and your family having to go through this. My wife's parents and little sister had about 5 feet of water in their house in Denham Springs and have lost pretty much everything. Yesterday my wife had them on speaker phone just as they were going back in their house for the first time since Friday and it was really hard for them.... and for us to hear, honestly. It's just a terrible situation for us knowing that they're going through that and we can't get to them to help or give them clothes or anything.

Fortunately, for us we didn't get any water in our house here. I'm in Prairieville about 5 minutes from Fred's. Sunday and Monday morning things got pretty scary, but luckily the little hill we're on saved us.

The highway beside my house flooded and has basically been a boat ramp the past few days and we've seen a lot of amazing things. People helping by spending their time, resources, etc. on others when they've lost everything themselves. It has been truly humbling to witness.

Lastly, I just wanted to echo Watson's sentiments about donating what you can. There's a lot of people hurting. There's people who have lost everything and don't have flood insurance, some don't have a home or a job to go back too. If the Red Cross or Salvation Army is doing a drive in your area please give whatever you can. I know that it will be appreciated. If you can't give anything, then please remember the people hear in your thoughts and prayers.

Here's a few pics that I thought I would share..

Crazy man. There was a wild flood event in Silver Spring, MD about two weeks ago too. Not that close, about 2 hours, but a small retailer we supply had their shop wiped out and it just hit so close to home that those people had their stuff just... washed away.

My thoughts went right to you Louisianans as soon as I heard. And obviously with the recent history of that area, it was an extra tough gut shot.

I actually do a little side thing with my buddy, a grassroots community based charity. I'll see if we can't do something to raise awareness, funds, and/or supplies to what's going on down there.

About to put a request for some advice about my "relationship"

This girl I've been talking to for over a year now was madly in love with me, but I wasn't looking for anything close to a relationship for the longest time. Over the course of knowing each other, we did become best friends. She was also here for me when my best friend passed away. However, about a month ago I finally decided to give it a try but it seemed she had already gave up on waiting around for me.

Now we are in the process of trying to start it from scratch, but we live two hours away from each other so I can't just see her and fix it in person. She told me yesterday that she was asked out on a date tonight because she owed it to herself to go after blindly chasing after me for a year with no reciprocation. I know this is all my fault really for not being ready when she was, but does anyone have any advice as to how I should take her not only going on a date but telling me about it?

These things will play themselves out. Does it suck to hear that from her? Of course. But, guaranteed, its 1,000 times worse in your head than it actually was. Not to mention, if she was that into for that long, she was probably thinking about you the whole time even if she'll never admit it.

You accepting it and even letting her tell you about it with maturity should go a long way with her.

Anyway, hang in there. Hate to sound cliché but, what will be will be. If you two are truly best friends, don't give up, even if you don't see immediate results. The time/distance may make it tough, but if its something you truly believe in just stay true to her and yourself. Good luck man.

Did somebody say relationship advice?! Da na na na!

Sounds like you got yourself a good girl. She didn't have to tell you anything about this date and the way she said she owed it to herself, it doesn't sound like she really WANTED to get in to the dating pool, but felt like you two were going nowhere. Like Gerg said, she was probably thinking of you the whole time.

There is a chance she has moved on and her telling you that is her way of saying you blew it, but that's for you to figure out.

2 hours ain't the longest distance. Split the difference and meet up, or depending on your living situations spend a weekend together and go the week without each other. Never had to do the distance thing, but it's not impossible. If you get two people who are truly in for the long haul and ups and downs, it can work.

I appreciate the advice guys. Needless to say I had no idea how to wrap my head around the situation.

I'm not sure how it is going to turn out, but I sent her one of those diamond candles in the mail to try to show that I am actually serious about the whole ordeal haha. You guys helped me a lot knowing that I'm handling the situation properly. I appreciate it a lot!
