I am somewhat of an amateur Astronomer. I really enjoy reading and watching tv shows about space and related things.

Tonight you can see a pretty sweet celestial occurrence. 5 planets from Murcury to Saturn are aligned in the sky. Right now you can see Jupiter shining brightly directly above the moon. Its a pretty awesome sight.

I also love to look at the stars, but unfortunately I have never had the privilege to see the sky in complete darkness. I one day hope to see the dust of the Milky Way in the sky. I imagine it is a sight to behold.

So I guess post what you like about this subject and we can have discussions here about current events and stuff like that in this field.

On a good clear night the stars are something else to look at.

You own a telescope? Considering I live at a decent elevation above sea level it wouldn't be a bad investment.

I wish I did. But unfortunately there is too much light pollution for me to justify getting one. No point in getting a cheap one. They are pretty much good for looking at the moon and Mars, but I want one much more powerful than that.

Here is an image of a nearby galaxy that has virtually no dust. It's a great galaxy for us to study because of this.

Used to want to be an astronaut as a kid til I saw the challenger blow up on the news. That killed it for me...

Always into astronomy though. like to hear about the electric universe theories. Goes against conventional science though.

Amazing how they can see things so far away yet havent developed a telescope to see something as close as pluto

You haven't seen anything until you're in the middle of the ocean 30+ miles from any light running darken ship. Absolutely amazing.

I can imagine this is just an awesome site.

Sometimes I'll drive out to the middle of nowhere up in the mountains here and stargaze. Amazing how clear the sky is when you're away from the city

Yep, I can essentially get that driving to certain places north of here. You were stationed in Alaska for a while, weren't you? I bet you got some amazing Aurora shows. That's my favorite thing to look at in the night sky. When they really get going, nothing compares to it.

Being in Anchorage you don't get it as often but I've seen them a few times, once on a plane. It's awesome and if you're in a quite place you can hear them as they make a sound. I never got to hear them though.

Great thread. Astronomy is fascinating, so much out there to be discovered and explained. I took an introductory astronomy class in college as well as a class that discussed the possibilities of life in the universe. I also have a small telescope, but the focus knob quit working years ago (it turns but it doesn't do anything) and I don't know how/where I can get it fixed.

And in recent astronomical news

Ninth planet may have been discovered

They haven't actually spotted it yet, but it's existence was surmised based on orbital characteristics of some Kuiper Belt objects. It's thought to be about 10x the mass of Earth (For comparison, Neptune is 17.41x and Uranus 14.5x the mass of Earth according to wikipedia) and have an orbit of 10-20,000 years.
