I think it's amazing how the play by play guys keep up with the action in hockey games. Plus to pronounce some of those names?!

    Wow

It's not really that hard. People just see a big or different name and think it's hard to pronounce but once you hear it a few times, it's easy. But some guys make it harder than it looks in other sports. Barkley pronouncing Valanciunas for example.

Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, Kucherov, Lundqvist and so on. Not so hard.

You may know this, may not, but I'll post it anyways. Just to give a little sneak peak into the background of sports production, there is usually some sort of guide from the league or individual teams, I don't remember which, that has a phonetic spelling of each player's name.

Yeah I know but still given the pace of the action and having to say the names during is impressive to me.

Ya, they got a media guide which helps with that. And commentators help each other too. Like the home and road guys talking to each other pregame about stuff like that.

NBA has a long guide for each game available to public online . Don't know if that's what commentators get, but wouldn't be surprised if it was.

It sounds like a horse race a lot of times...I enjoy hockey but the NHL has perhaps the worst marketing department in sports.

I'm in the "I like hockey but don't really understand what I'm watching" group, and I've been watching since I was a kid lol, we're talking like 25 years of casual hockey fandom and it still feels like a series of chaotic events. It wasn't til I was in my teens that I figured out what it means for a D man to pinch. I can't spot the type of defensive strategy in hockey the way I could in basketball for example because it's so easy to tell if a team is playing man or zone (obviously more intricate than that, but I can't even get that far in hockey). Never had a problem following the puck though

I think hockey has the best playoffs. NFL comes close since it's only one game.

Can't agree with that at all. When you have the clear two best teams matched up in the second round rather than the final there is something wrong with the format.

I agree playoff hockey is fun to watch, but the format is awful and the playoffs are way too long.

I liked lacrosse too, but the league just suck's at promoting the game. Can't get games on tv. Used to be but now I can't find it. I loved the NLL 10-15 years ago. The Rock used to dominate so badly, it was fun.

At least in NHL, anyone has a shot. Not like NBA where 8 seed making finals is laughable.
But the playoff format does suck. NHL has 2 division per conference in a league with 31 teams. I wouldn't mind them making bold move and have 1 conference, 4 divisions(north, east, south, west). Each has 8 teams except one with 7 until next expansion happens(not that NHL should expand, but owners getting 500m from expansion, who'd vote no on that? Even if a team folds in future, they make more from expansion than relocation)

Hockey may have the most exciting playoffs, atmosphere wise, but not really the best overall.

So this might be common knowledge to some but I learned today that the classic arcade game Pac-Man was originally called Puck Man for it's North American release. You can imagine why the name was changed.
