In the Bay Area it's all about location for the malls. A couple in the south bay have been deteriorating and have had problems with vacancies for years.

However there's also a couple that are booming. One has been remodeled inside over the last couple years. Never any vacancies. It's got huge advertising screens that remind me off ballpark scoreboards hanging from the ceilings near intersections and escalators. There's ai helper robots that wheel around and interact with people. They're redoing the outside now. Building two huge parking structures and giving the facade a makeover. I hate that mall. It's always super crowded.

Re: Off Topic 2017: Fallen Kingdom

It's kind of a testament to how times change with the brick-and-mortar eroding away as "online" everything and "mobile" everything becomes more and more dominant. Some things will probably never go mobile/online, but I still remember what a HUGE hullabaloo it was when Gurnee Mills mall in Gurnee, IL was erected/opened in the early 1990s (I grew up in the neighboring city of Waukegan). It was like a palace and none of us had ever seen anything like it. People would go there to do serious exercise, not even buy stuff, just by walking around it. Before that mall, there was a more modest mall called Lakehurst (which went mostly defunct decades ago thanks to Gurnee Mills), but you mostly had to go across town to several different stores before the advent of these one-stop mega malls. Mega malls themselves were a pretty big sea change from dotting your way across town to 5 or 6 different modest, freestanding "stores" to get 5 or 6 different things. I wonder what will come next and will I be alive to see it?

Had a scary moment yesterday. I woke up and put my contacts in but my vision in the my left eye was extremely blurry. So I thought maybe there was something wrong with the contact, threw it away, and put in a new pair, but still my vision was extremely blurry. Ended up going to eye doctor and was diagnosed with something called Keratitis, which caused my cornea to swell. Never heard of it before. Apparently it can be caused by bacteria, fungai, virus, or injury to the eye. Dr not really sure of cause. I was prescribed lubricant drops, antibiotic drops, and an ointment.

Woke up this morning with normal vision, although I can't wear contacts until after follow up appointment with eye dr on Monday.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I just cant bring myself to put contacts in my eyes. I have to have glasses. I'm one of those people who cant even THINK about touching my eyeball with my finger let alone let a piece of plastic or whatever contatcs are made of touch them. I'd look into getting Lasic surgery done but if I cant get around trusting myself to touch my eye with my finger then I'm sure not gonna let some stranger cut 'em with lasers. I'd really rather go blind than let someone touch my eyes.

Do your guys malls have movie theaters? I thought that was smart of the malls here in the Philippines. Almost every single one has a theater or an IMAX.

Department stores can't be be the cornerstones of the mall anymore. Its gotta be restaurants and entertainment like bowling alleys.

Went into a mall today and there was a decent amount of people there. The mall nearest to me has a theater and a bunch of food but I had to pick something up from an online order.

First time I had actually been inside the *mall* itself in God knows how long.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

So my power was out for 18 consecutive hours from Friday evening to Saturday morning. I never opened the fridge during that time. Are all of the usual suspects (milk, chicken, eggs, cooked veggies) to be disposed of?

Also, if my electric company gives me notification of restoration of power within three hours of the outage, then eight, then 15, then 20 (and then fixes it within 18), do I have grounds for being compensated for my foods being spoiled? It's not like it's their fault the power went out, but had I known it was going to be out until Saturday morning or they weren't going to work on the issue, I would have gladly went across the street to my neighbor's house and transferred my food in their fridge (yes, there was power across the street).

The power company wouldn't be liable. You'd have to file a claim with your homeowners insurance and I have to imagine you would have to have a very thorough, and expensive policy if it covers food loses due to power outages.
