Re: Off Topic 2017: Fallen Kingdom

    Few questions Blzr

    1. Was this outage specific to your residence or was it more widespread? I know you said the other side of the street had power.
    2. Were there any severe weather conditions (storms/wind) in your area that might have caused widespread outages that it may have taken the power company some time to get to all of them
2b. Do you know the cause of the outage.

Either way, I really don't know anything about if insurance would cover it or if they can be held accountable, but the contents of your fridge doesn't really seem like something worth fighting them over. Just take the loss and move on.

I had a similar experience a number of years ago though, except the outage was planned so repairs could be made to underground lines literally right next to my building. Was originally supposed to be an 8-10 hour outage but ended up being like 23 hours and 54 minutes.

this would have been a great Seinfeld episode. George loses all of his fridge food due to a a blackout and Kramer convinces him to put all of his (Kramer's) bad fruit on George's list.

I guess if I lost more than 5 or 6 hundred dollars worth of goods I might be tempted to at least looking into compensation. But I dont usually keep more than a couple hundred dollars worth in my fridge. I let WalMart keep everything until I'm really ready for it. But then, I only live a couple miles from their fridge so its no inconvenience for me to go there.

Yeah, spinach, arugula (although that's pretty bitter but I'm a fan) and other greens are infinitely better then iceberg.

Plus, because it's like 99% water it goes bad so quick. These other greens stay fresh longer, as far as I can tell.

            1) 69 residents were affected. I guess the grid is separated so that my side of my street and the houses on the street over (connecting our backyards together) all didn't have any power.

            2) We're up in the hills, and during the summer there are always high winds. They were no stronger on this particular day than the days preceding it, though. The entire western peninsula is undergoing some major pipeline maintenance though, and our electric company has notified us of scheduled power outages within the past month or two. They have already done those, though... they may have worked on the poles as well. This was not one of those scheduled outages.

2b) It was a broken or fallen pole. I don't know where, I think somewhere where the houses' backyards connect.

As far as contents, you may say it's like $20 worth of food... but there was steak in the freezer for July 4th, and that was $60+. We also went out to dinner that night, so consider that another $60+.

These days money isn't growing on trees for me, and I'm about to move out of the area because of how dang expensive it's getting. I'll take every penny I can get. Case in point, a few weeks ago I rolled up $350 worth of quarters and $62.75 worth of dimes, nickels and pennies. Took me quite a while, but I need it all now.

              Absolutely.

I'm shocked anyone would use any type of lettuce at all over cabbage in tacos.

You can soak the cabbage in all different kinds of sauce/dressing to your flavor desire too.

                  A) If money is that tight that you can't lose $20 worth of grocery's, you don't wait to take stuff to a neighbors to salvage it. You do it right away.

                  B) Food in a freezer should stay good for 24-48 hours so I hope you didn't though the steak away.

                  C) One of your initial complaints was that the power company "did nothing" and then you go on to admit that you don't know for sure where the problem was. That shows you have no idea what they attempted or didn't.

Life is too short man, move on. Take that $350 to buy some more groceries. You'll get more frustrating filing a claim for $20 than you would just moving on.

                  Things WILL get better.

I thought so too at first but then given the amount of groceries lost and when he said "I'll take every penny I can get" there is more to it than that.

So I received a letter from my work today. Extremely curious as to what it was about as we normally don't receive letters at the first of July. Turns out the letter was informing me that I was receiving a significant raise!

Not a bad way to end a Monday,
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Also, if my electric company gives me notification of restoration of power within three hours of the outage, then eight, then 15, then 20 (and then fixes it within 18), do I have grounds for being compensated for my foods being spoiled? It's not like it's their fault the power went out, but had I known it was going to be out until Saturday morning or they weren't going to work on the issue, I would have gladly went across the street to my neighbor's house and transferred my food in their fridge (yes, there was power across the street).
Too late at this point, but if the food is valuable to you, go buy ice and either pack it into the fridge/large freezer or put all your stuff into coolers. Stuff can last weeks with proper usage of coolers and ice. If you don't have any coolers (?!???!) then this doesn't help. It's probably not a terrible idea to consider having a backup generator either, but that's a more long-term thing and you might not need to pony up for that if outages are uncommon.
