It should be safe as long as power is out no more than 4 hours. Discard any perishable food (such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers) that have been above 40 °F for over 2 hours.

What they all seem to neglect to mention is when refrigerators will go over 40 degrees. I mean I understand why since all fridges are set at different temperatures, but are they making any sort of implication that 40 degrees is hit two hours after the power goes out, or two hours after the first four hours, or...? I'm just uncertain when the heck that actual time hits.

Furthermore, my fridge just has a dial with levels. It doesn't say what the temperature is. Even if I wanted to somehow measure that, I'd have to open the fridge to check it which is obviously one of the things you would want to avoid doing during an outage.

Again, my food is safe but this is just confusing.

        My laptop charging cable exploded.

To back up a bit, this is a third-party charger that works for my HP laptop. I got it maybe last fall or so, and pretty early on it became stingy to the point that I really had to work the wiring in a specific way for it to recognize and hold the charge, and the pattern always seemed to change so it was more of a nuisance to have than not. I typically left it in place at school so I could just leave it there to charge it, and then charge it at home with my normal charger (I hated having to move it from location to location, especially with the outlet configuration at school).

Anyway, tonight I couldn't find out how to maneuver the cable to give it a proper charge, until finally I kind of stretched and arched it out on an open fruit box over my bed. It's hard to explain the image of it, but basically I got it and hopped on my exercise bike while watching the Dodgers-A's game on my laptop. About a half-hour into my ride, in the corner of my peripheral vision, I see (and hear) a small little explosion in the thick part of the cable right next to the AC adapter, and it completely split apart in two. There was a little smoke and smell that you could sense as well after that. Thankfully it was dangling in the air, or else I think my bed sheet would have caught fire.

I don't know if it was overheating or what, but yikes I don't think I want to buy another third-party charger again after that.

You never know what you're gonna get with a third-party adapter or chargers. I've seen way too many stories from people I know day to day. At this point the saying needs to be changed to "Never go cheap on things that separate you from the ground or your electronics from the outlet."

15 years ago today was the big "Northeast Blackout". 10M people in Ontario, and 45M people in the US were impacted by it.

I remember when it happened and how it was the first real long blackout I ever experienced. Every now and then there might be ones that last an hour or more, but this one went on for awhile. I don't remember how long for me, but I'd say a day or so, which in the summer, no fan/ac or anything, it was hot. And food spoiling in the fridge too. Thankfully sleeping in basement helped cool down.

Though about 5 years ago was the worst blackout I have ever been in. Happened days before Christmas, and power went out for over a day. No heat or anything. Came close to having no power for Christmas, luckily I got it back, though many people in the city had no power until days AFTER Christmas. Everything was literally coated in ice. Trees split in half too.

Wasn’t this caused by a solar flare or some event of that nature? I read recently that the rocks that are under I95 (the most major highway on the east coast) are vulnerable to this phenomena. Magnet field or something, bounces the energy waves back and screws with the power grids. That’s just a vague recollection of the article. If I recall correctly, they weren’t really sure how to deal with it going forward.

They had these at my 4 year old nephew's party. Pretty sure I ate more than the kids. That's not even the sad part...... I couldn't eat them without putting them on my fingers first.

On the topic of snacks from years ago, I can't remember the name of it, but there were these kind of chips/snacks I used to have that you made yourself. I think the pack had flat green or pink squares and you'd make it on a frying pan and it'd end up expanding. It'd obviously end up having lots of oil in it, but I can't remember what they were called.

This is closest thing I've found to it, but this is a regular chip bag, not one you make yourself. But I remember it looking (and somewhat tasting) similar to this.
