Interviewed on March 5th, followed up a week after, lady said she'll get back to me "shortly," went through and cleared the background check process, didn't hear back from the lady at all, sent an e-mail this past Friday asking what the status was, finally got an email right now at 1am my time saying they're on vacation and they wanted to bring me in for a second interview before she left but had too much to deal with and wants to schedule something once she comes back next week.

Not sure if I should be worried or concerned mainly about whether I should be considering it "unprofessional" or a sign that it's a chaotic, dumb place to work, etc or whether these things really do take this much time. It would be my first "real job" and "real process" I've had to go through so to speak so I'm not totally well-versed in how these things work.

So that's almost a month. I think the size of the company would be a factor. It might be chaotic now, but they could be doing the work of two people and that's the reason why they're hiring somebody.

Like you alluded to half of the interview is you finding out about them and deciding if they are a right fit for you. Why is the position open? How long was the previous employee there for? What is the culture of the company? What are their 5 or 10 year goals? Is there room to move up within the company? Etc.

FT is right. The delay would be a bit disconcerting to me as well so I would go into the 2nd interview and ask as many questions as possible to understand what type of setting it is.

What type of person is the boss? What are the expectations of me? How many hours am I expected to work each week? What are the goals of the department each week, each quarter, each year? How achievable are these goals (this is seriously a big question, some jobs feel like you can never win)? What is the impact when these goals are not met and how does that affect the department? What is the company's views of its employees? How does the department/company treat success? How does the company treat failure?

As much as they are interviewing you for the job, you are also interviewing them for your services. Money talks but it definitely is not everything if it stresses you out and you dread going to work every day. The more you can find out about the job, the culture of the department and the company's values the more of an educated decision you can make as to whether you would be a good fit or it's more stress than the money is worth.

Honestly it seems like I'd be there to help modernize the business and help the lady I interviewed with, who's the VP. It's a niche, very successful company that's been around for decades but their work environment seems to reflect that as well. Their inventory system, for example, still runs on DOS. Makes my current place looks state of the art.

I asked a bunch of questions the first time around but I'll use the second time around to ask more.

Not trying to cause you to trigger red flags, but I went through a very similar thing last year.

Interviewed first week of December, they then tell me they were going to wait until after the holidays before proceeding (was told the next interview was a formality, consent to background check and the like). Second week of January comes without hearing anything, so I email them to find out she is on vacation and will be back next week. Couple weeks go by and I send another email and was told she suffered an injury while on vacation and is out until late March. Asked where this leaves me, and I was told that they cannot move on the position until she returns.

Needless to say I moved on and accepted a job elsewhere. And in June I get an email asking if I was still interested. June, when I interviewed in December.

Things like that tell me they don't have a process, they were kind of winging it. Personally to me its not a good look on their part at all.

It does depend on industry though. I'm in the public sector and it is not uncommon to apply for a position and wait a few months before hearing anything, but typically once the interview process starts things move at a brisk pace after that.

MY advice would only be don't stop your job search thinking this one is in the bag. Keep looking and treat it like its a race to hire you (within reason)

Having just gone through the job hunt with a pretty quick turnaround, way too much opportunity out there to settle for something. If it’s raising a red flag to you, it’s probably for a reason. Trust your gut. Don’t make excuses or justify for a company — NEVER do that, actually.

It sucks to let go of something you think might be the job, but if it doesn’t happen, it must not be right.

Keeping putting those lines out there. I was of the mindset that I’m a catch for a company. I got bites from a few, but the one I ended up going with really moved on me - interviewed Monday, heard back the next day (Tuesday) to schedule a follow up the next day (Wednesday), one day of decision making and was offered a position on Friday. Maybe that’s quick to some, but I’d rather that then to sit around waiting for weeks or months. I felt appreciated and valued from the onset.

Good luck man. Life too short to settle for some garbage, in whatever form it is.

Really gotta be more specific in the things I hope for. I recently have been hoping to be on tv after finding out tv tapings of a show I like are actually filmed really nearby to me. Not too long after, I get a chance to be on tv.....but in some news piece someone was doing(looked like possibly a 6pm "good news" story)

Lol, passing up an opportunity to be on tv. If only it was about something I liked/knew about.

I'm talking about the news piece. It was about some topic I had no interest in or knowledge on. That's the TV stuff I could've been on but passed on that.

Have you looked to see if there are any casting calls for extras? Odds are you'd fit into a demographic for at least one project.
