At first I thought I'd clearly hear Laurel because I've never heard of Yanny before, and I hear Laurel mentioned multiple times on TV a week. But surprisingly all I heard the first time was Yanny.

Though I heard it again on TV, and first time I did hear Yanny, but part of it sounded like Laurel. Now I hear Laurel most of the time. Even when trying to re-hear Yanny in that clip.

Aren't they playing both clips over each other? So you might hear one over the other due to the frequency(higher vs lower pitch)?

The very first bit of sound I can clearly make out as the Y in Yanny, and then you can hear Laurel start immediately after. So Yanny starts before Laurel, and ends before Laurel also, but both clips seem to be present in that.

I was wondering why this was a big deal yesterday. They were talking about it on the Radio and my coworkers were talking about it most of the day. Didn’t even know where this came from or why it was a thing, lol.

Yeah a co-worker asked if I heard Yanny or Laurel and I was like, "what in the world are you talking about?"

Not sure what the big deal is, but I guess its something over my head.

This article explains why you hear different things and no it’s not 2 different audio files.

Is it 'Yanny' or 'Laurel'? No, It's 'Yammy!' This is What’s Trending Today… The question seems simple enough. What word do you hear in the audio -- “Yanny” or “Laurel?” The answer, as it turns out, is not so simple. And a four-second recording is dividing -- and confusing -- internet...

You didn't know it was a big deal or a 'thing' because it's neither.

What's the term called when as you're going down (like in defeat) you take someone else with you? Not the description of the individual, but the action itself. I am drawing a total blank here.

Thank you, that was probably one of the words I was trying to come up with, if not the actual one. I kept saying other words in my head that weren't quite it.

By the way, I hear Laurel, but that was through my PC speakers. Apparently if you have more hi-fi equipment, you may more appropriately hear Yanny. On that note, it is apparently supposed to be a speech-to-text of "laurel" from an electronic dictionary, or something or another.

                                re: Off-Topic

So, about two months ago I dropped my cellphone and hit on the corner - which apparently is the perfect spot to not only crack the otter box around it, but to shatter the back cover, too. That same week we went into Verizon to see what I could do. Basically they tried to sell me a new phone. The cost to replace it via insurance was $150. So I decided to keep it.

Now, I think the battery is on it's last legs. It's been shutting off randomly and not reading the correct battery level %. Not to mention it's been losing signal in places where I always had it before. This Sunday the fiancee and I going into Verizon to combine accounts and to replace my phone.

My question to you guys - do you have any suggestions for phones or fixes? I have a Samsung S7. The only thing I really use it for is to stream Spotify, cruise OS, look up basketball stats, and take pictures. I don't really want to pay more than $20-30/mo for a "new" phone. Especially when I can get an insurance replacement for $150 (though I know it's a factory refurb) - comparatively I can get a new S7 for $450.
