You guys pretty much answered it. Girl sent me a gif of pennywise because clowns creep me out and said it was because I left her on read.

I had no idea what that meant.

Those "read but no reply" people are the worst. The "..." no reply people are almost as bad.

I like using phone messaging for convenience/ease, but get annoyed when people do things like that mid-conversation, even if it's simply just about regular topics.

But when I was younger everyone did that with text messages.

Btw, the way I found out its "a thing" was kinda funny though. Next day we were chatting and I sent the kind of message that you have to think about. The "shoot your shot" message right? I hit send and while waiting for the response I'm scrolling my newsfeed and I see a meme that says "don't do it b*** hes just gonna leave you on read again"

doesn't every conversation end with someone being "left on read" though? Feels like all conversations would go on endlessly if neither participant stopped

Apparently you must signal to the other party when you are leaving the conversation.

In my case I asked how was work, she said she was off, I said I figured she worked because her days off earlier in the week, she told me she was off today but works the next several days. And that is where I left it.

Apparently it upset her, and I guess I could have avoided it by typing "okay" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I cannot stand facebook messenger because of the "read" thing. Basically people know if you have read their text, and plausible deniability goes out the window. Not responding becomes a response in and of itself, and you can't get away with responding hours later with some people because they know exactly when you read it. And, let's be honest, a lot of women don't need much help over-dissecting things.

If you are like me, and don't want to text people all day everyday, it's rather annoying. Thankfully texting on android does not say one way or the other.

You gotta shut that down. You aren’t required by law to respond to everyone immediately even if you see it. I can’t stand that passive type nagging BS.

The only time I’m annoyed at it is when we’re trying to make time sensitive plans or something and you know the other person is purposefully just not responding to keep it open ended (for some reason? Maybe waiting for some better plan to pop up?). Just say maybe, or no. I don’t care, I just want to know FFS. I have a few friends like this and it’s annoying as hell, but I’ve come to understand it. I just cut them from the plan and tell them it’s their own dumb fault if they get mad when they aren’t included. My wife still agonizes over it though and I just shake my head. You KNOW what these people do... why are you surprised?

But if someone really does basically ghost you, it’s a response in itself. Oh this person saw this clear question and didn’t bother to answer it. It probably means no if it’s an important question. If it’s just a “how was your day?” and didn’t respond, it’s no big deal usually. You can usually tell what’s happening, use a little common sense, context and some real honesty.

I didn't know this annoyed people so much. People don't even really ask me why I didn't respond. If so; I had nothing to say, was done with the convo, or got busy.

I mean, really, y'all; you think you not responding to a text for six hours probably didn't give any of that away anyway? Lol. **** y'all think y'all fooling? Lol

I don’t know.. it depends on the person and conversation. I mean there’s some people you might as well just call because if you text them you won’t get a response until next year. And if it’s just small talk then who cares if they stopped responding, I do it too. But if it’s more important I find it rude to not respond so long as enough time has elapsed where you can’t really use the ‘I was busy’ excuse.

People at my work do this with read receipts with email. I turn the option off to send back a receipt though.

Probably goes better as a gear grinder, but I think people who use the 'read receipt' option are more than a little bit needy. Granted, in legal/business contexts there might be an actual need or policy for it. But, otherwise I will respond to you when I damn well feel like responding to you. Anyone who reads any more into it that deserves to consider themselves on read.

Is this a byproduct of our text/chat/IM/technology-driven culture? Probably not. When people were sending letters, I guess you could also be put on read by your pen pal.

I only use it if there’s a potential for a need to be able to prove it was read somewhere down the line.
