Good luck with the sleeping pills, I went through that addiction and it's not easy. It's like your body becomes immune or something and you need more, next thing you know it's "russian roulette" like you said because you need so much to sleep and I don't know the exact description of what happens but with the way your breathing slows down it could just stop altogether. Definitely difficult, hope it works out for you man

        Re: Personal question

It sounds like I'm a little late to the thread but I hope your conversation goes/went well.

I agree with pretty much everything that has already been said. Keep it professional, involve HR (especially since it's a health matter), etc. I used to put in lots of extra hours and found myself burnt out for a while. I'll still do it when a project demands but I'm much better about recognizing when it is/isn't crucial. I used to even spend a lot of the time that I did take off feeling guilty about it. If that's you, think of it this way...you can take a week off now and help them be ready for it OR you can work yourself to exhaustion (or worse) and they lose you for good with little/no notice or time to prepare.

One other thing that I'd suggest: It sounds like you're a pretty tight-knit crew (or at least close to her). Once you've gotten the resolution that you need, maybe try to find some way for her to understand that you approached it the way you did because you didn't feel like she understood your situation. She may not have realized how you were feeling or the seriousness of it all. If she is receptive during that conversation, it may help when similar things come up in the future. And if not, you'll at least be able to recognize that you probably were being taken advantage of.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Just seeing this thread for the first time. Lots of sound advice here.

Like countryboy, I'm wondering if you've talked to your boss yet. Let us know and look out for yourself first.

              Re: Personal question

Just wanted to say best of luck with everything. As others have rightly pointed out, your health comes first. And you are doing the right thing by involving your doctor in your attempt to wean off of sleeping pills - this can be serious and should be treated as such.

There's a reason everyone wishes loved ones a "healthy & happy new year" every year - because those are the 2 most important things.

apparently he did have the talk. and either one of two things happened:
                1) she tightened the shackles and he's no longer allowed to leave work.
                2) or she fired him and now he cant afford the internet.

Hope you're doing good Jeremey. I'm glad you got off the sleeping pills, those really F you up and its not worth your health. If you're in a state that gives out "green cards" I would go that route to sleep better if you are having problems sleeping.
