    Re: 2018 Fitness Challenge

Started my Half Marathon training last week, which is off to a bit of a rough start as I hadn't been running a ton recently due to all of my work travel, and coming down with a viral/sinus infection that I'm still taking antibiotics for.

But hey, we're still putting in the miles and I am slowly feeling better, so hopefully in the next week or two I'll be back at 100%.

      2018 Fitness Challenge

Under 180. Lost 60 pounds since July and now lost 50 pounds for the weight loss contest. It ends on Nov 17th so I’m gonna be super strict until then.

Might be a stupid thing to try but on the last 5 days I was thinking of cutting weight like what fighters do to get an edge since we are talking about 4500 bucks here. Not gonna go super crazy and make a certain weight but want to get rid of as much water weight as I can. Thoughts?

EDIT: After reading more about it, I’m gonna say hell no to that. I rather fast than go through what fighters do.

Pros and cons to switching to mostly water at meals? Want to cut out Gatorade eventually. And chocolate milk

I don't think there is any cons switching to water. You'll be eliminating a lot of sugar by just going water only and of course lose weight be healthier.

I think chocolate milk at least has protein in it, so there's some value to it. I've heard as a post-workout drink, it's actually not bad (basically a protein shake). Gatorade really has no value whatsoever over water.

Yeah i can agree with that after a workout, but during a meal might just turn the milk to pure sugar when your digesting it with other protein and carbs.

I think most people obtain enough protein from other sources that milk is largely redundant and a source of weight/fat for a lot of people who consume it regularly.

Also, staying hydrated makes digestion quicker. At least that's been my personal experience.

That's probably right. There's some calcium benefit but generally I would probably agree the pro/con balance is tenuous for most.

$4500 is a good chunk of change. I'd def consider doing it if it's going to put you over the top and win.

Yeah, the "chocolate milk for a post workout protein option" is such BS. Just a desperate attempt by the dairy industry to stay relevant with the recent influx of milk substitutes.

I mean, I dunno if I'd resort to laxatives and diuretics, but yeah - I'd forgo a few meals to try to get me over the finish line.

I agree that it's not exactly option #1A but it's probably fine as a post-workout drink. It does have a fair amount of protein and some necessary carbs, and it's probably a bit cheaper than your standard protein shake, so nutritionally, it's probably 50-70% of a protein shake for half (or less) the cost. I wouldn't call it "BS", it's just....it's an option (among many).

Yeah I wouldn’t do diuretics but I would try to do the method of 2 gallons of water the first day and go on down like what GSP does. Ride the stationary and if I can find a steam room I’ll do that too.

Still thinking a better option is to water fast the last couple days as that greatly helps my psoriasis which is more important than winning the contest but it will get rid of water weight as well doing that. I just can’t workout like crazy.

I know protein shakes/powders are big, but I've never felt compelled to venture into that arena. Personally, I think I get plenty of protein from other sources (yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts, beans, etc) and would rather consume them that way as well. Plus, I can't drink or eat anything following a workout so water works best for me.

We came back from vacation/honeymoon on Sunday and I worked out for the first time in 10 days last night. I basically jumped back into the same routine I was doing and realized I might be doing too much. It's funny how much you get used to doing if you continue to condition and increase your workload. I'll probably reel in the jogging/sprinting before working out and limit that to 2-3 times a week. Still, it felt good to get back into things.
