Re: LinkedIn - How Does It Work?

As someone mentioned, the more connections, the better as the more searches you appear in.

However, those connections must be good connections and not just random connections.

My career is in IT and LinkedIn I would say has helped me with my profession. Can't speak on others.

I have no idea what this number means, but several times I got notifications from LinkedIn telling me that when I get to 30 connections I would have a better chance of being approached by recruiters. No idea if it's true or not. I'm supposed if I had 35 it would tell me to get to 40 and so on...

As of now I have 140 connections...I'm going for 200 now! It's just a number, but it does give me satisfaction seeing some more and more. In real life it means nothing, obviously. :o I'm happy it helps others though, good for you Altimus.

I do appear in searches every week, but nothing happens.

You just get connections that are a lot of recruiters and things, so if you're ever actually looking you can message them...or a lot I find I get messages from recruiters looking for my developer skill set. Not always a fit, but nice to know I'm pretty wanted

It'll make life a lot easier if I ever want to go on a full job hunt.

I have some recruiters among my connections. I have tried to contact them when I saw a job ad where they work, but they hardly ever respond.

That is probably because they don't have time to respond to messages on LI that would sound like, send me a resume.

I am a Engineering Recruiter and I have over a thousand connections. When a Recruiter conducts a search on LI, they are only allowed to see their 1st and 2nd connections, so, it's more important on the Recruiters end to receive as many connections as you can. Of course, a Recruiter has options to purchase a license and see more people.

The key to your profile is to have as many buzzwords in your profile so you easily come up in Recruiter searches.

Even if you are not looking at the present time, it doesn't hurt to take a look if a good opportunity comes knocking on your door. It just depends on if the timing is right and everything else is right.

Make sure your contact information is on your profile page out front and center and not hidden if you are looking. It surely doesn't hurt putting in your heading, I am a IT Developer with Java experience and I am presently looking for career opportunities.

By the way, what do you think about asking for a referral from HR or other connections I have while applying for a job at the company they work for?

Re: LinkedIn - How Does It Work?

What would people recommend as a good thing to put in the headline of the profile? Don't want to make it sound too generic or desperate (flat out being like "Experience in ___" or "Seeking position related to ____").

Not looking at one specific industry right now so it can be flexible abit.

Long term, probably more of a dream job, but getting into the sports industry one day would be cool. Doesn't even have to be major pro teams, even minor league/junior teams. That's an industry I know for sure I'd be motivated for, but obviously so few spots and so popular of an industry.

When I was looking for a job, I made my headline, “Well rounded professional looking for opportunity in Operations or Logistics role.”

There’s so many tips and tricks on the perfect words to put on a resume or a profile, you’ll do circles trying to nail it down. That headline is pretty generic, but it got the point across - any extra specifics about myself or experience, I figured I could knock down in an interview or correspondence of some sort.

It worked. The worst part about my new job (been on about a month and a half) has nothing to do with it — it’s the commute. Going from 5 minutes to the office to 45-60 minutes hasn’t been fun. But those double sized paychecks and full benefits sure are. Yeah boy!!

Yes, buzz/key words are huge. I actually found some professional recruiters on LinkedIn and picked one to help me with my resume and cover letter. Amazing how much information she got out of me that wasn't in my resume (key words).

Funny enough for me, a job that was several minutes from me was the job I hated the most(but obviously didn't mind since it was close by), and the one about an hour away is the one I liked the most(and obviously the downside being that I didn't like the time it took, especially once weather gets bad).

I would only ask for a referral if you know the connection really well. Is that what you are asking?

If you only know them as a connection through LI, I wouldn't use them as a referral.

Landed an interview through me improving my Linkedin profile. An area not too far away which is nice, and it's a field I'm good at. Sound too good to be true...it is apparently.

Decided to look up reviews about the company and people talking about how it's actually a commission based company basically operating under a pyramid scheme.

So much for that. Guess I should've been suspicious when getting email from them on a long weekend(and their office hours are only monday-friday). Their office is in the same building as some bigger known companies, so from that alone I thought it would be nice, but don't wanna go waste my time doing anything like that. No parking either so gotta pay like $20 for daily parking in a lot.

That's too bad. Yeah, you have to do some research to find out who's behind the account. I haven't had any interviews through LinkedIn. But I usually avoid companies I don't know anything about and stick with the ones I want to work for and know they are for real.
