Re: 2020 Fitness Adventures
What exactly does the Apple Watch or fitness devices in general track? I don't do walking or running cardio, but I do workout fairly often. Usually they have a range of calories burned, but it would be nice to get a more accurate read if possible. Plus, heart-rate, etc.
Anyway, nice work Fiddy. Be sure and rest sometime, though.
FT,
The apple watch fitness app is basically a HR monitor with the capability to track steps, flights climbed, avg HR, etc...
The newer the watch the better the HR monitor is but from what I can tell, they're all fairly accurate when I tested it while wearing a Polar watch & heart strap.
For me, it's extra motivation and helps me either step my workout up when I'm not working hard or reinforces when I feel like I'm pushing myself.
I've started off the year with two big changes. First, I stopped eating all meat except for seafood. Even that I only eat maybe once a week. I feel pretty good so far, especially after meals. I don't get that overly full feeling like I used to when I ate red meat. I'm sure I'll miss steak but so far so good.
Secondly, I switched from doing one body part a day (except on weekends) to total body workouts. I really dig it so far, especially not being crazy sore when it's leg or chest day. Because I'm not burned out I feel like I can lift more too. It def takes more planning beforehand but it's fun and I grab a lot of exercises from my workout buddies & the internet. Thinking about purchasing Athlean Beast X though to get on some sort of plan.Comment

Re: 2020 Fitness Adventures
So glad I held I to my bike trainer. Got another 30-minute ride in, followed by some bodyweight exercises. Believe that's my fifth indoor ride in just over a week.
Our roads/paths are still covered in ice and snow, with more snow headed this way. As long as there's not too much accumulation, I'm going to put my larger tires on my gravel bike and ride around town a little over the weekend.Currently Playing:

Re: 2020 Fitness Adventures
For the first time in my life I had MLK Day off so I did the most adult thing I've probably ever done on a day off and went to the local Carilion clinic and did a general wellness testing and checkup. The doctor basically told me to keep doing what I'm doing and that I shouldn't need to do anything before age 50.

Re: 2020 Fitness Adventures
Signed up for Les Mills On Demand fitness classes yesterday. They have over 800 classes available, and pretty much any style of workout you want. My wife and I took Les Mills group fitness classes in AZ, mostly focused on Body Combat (MMA cardio workout) and Body Pump (strength training), and after not having any classes available to us in Iowa, we decided to finally do something about it and sign up for On Demand.
So far, so good. Stream quality is great and the instructors do a good job of walking you through the workout with their voice so that you don't feel like you have to stare at the TV/screen the entire time.Currently Playing:

Re: 2020 Fitness Adventures
Like usual got lazy the last month of the year. Wife and I started "80 day obsession" from beachbody on demand. It's a "3/4" difficulty" so I think I'm going to do the first month. Then I had a p90x2/Max30 hybrid I've been looking to do that I'll transition into.
This time last year my wife and I tried couch to 5K. We both realized despite our best efforts we hate long running. I do love sprinting though and moved a block over from a public track. So I think once it warms up some I'll add in a sprint routine. I really don't think anything beats straight up sprinting for a cardio workout.
We also do dry January so no alcohol for the first month of the year.
Successful on no alcohol so far to start the year.Comment

Re: 2020 Fitness Adventures
HasFit is still doing great for me. It's usually a nice mixture of cardio and weight-training with a lot of the cardio itself incorporating light hand weights or dumbbells.
There is a free app for Android and Apple and then all their videos are free on YouTube. They do charge a subscription fee to "follow" their monthly workout routines (basically a schedule of workouts for each month), but that's $50 for the year. Easily worth it.

My wife and I used to do Hasfit until we found this lady Sydney Cummings:
She does really good exercises and if you follow her workouts, the variety will give you a good plan yet not be bored.
Plus she’s very easy on the eyes [emoji102]

Re: 2020 Fitness Adventures
Temperature was in the 50's today, so was able to get my first outdoor run in over 3 weeks in, and it was great. Nearly 4 miles at a 9:20 pace (still some lingering snow/ice on the park trail, so had to ease off in sections). Definitely felt good to be exercising outdoors.Currently Playing:

Re: 2020 Fitness Adventures
I’ve been monitoring this thread for awhile and reading about everyone’s progress. Thought I’d finally contribute...
I’ve made it a part of my daily routine to do cardio. I’ve had three back surgeries with my most recent one being last September to remove hardware from my previous fusion surgery. Once I started feeling better, I began walking about an hour a day. Also, been eating better. Now, I’ve progressed to being able to jog 3-4 miles at a time with NO pain. I still have lingering pain especially when I wake up or sitting too long. But overall, this is the best I’ve felt pain-wise in over 10 years when all this stuff started. There is no doubt the cardio has alleviated a lot of my pain...

Re: 2020 Fitness Adventures
For me it's not a workout program , it's a lifestyle change.
It's 2020 , just turned 60, at this point I'm just trying to stay alive. 45 years drumming , 40 years painting climbing up and down ladders , body has held up ok but there is some joint pain setting in. No working out for me just clean eating with the occasional "treat meal" tossed in. Had a fisherman's platter on super bowl Sunday. I used to be able to down the entire thing in one sitting now I get 3 meals out of it.
I made the decision in May 2019 to change my eating habits. Nothing like sitting in front of the T.V. binge watching Netflix and downing a 15oz can of UTZ potato stix followed by a family size bag of Smartfood cheese popcorn all washed down with several cans of coke. For dinner how about Chinese food , KFC or Popeye's , Pizza , 5 guys burgers, every night of the week. Yep I ate it all and way to much. For instance a typical KFC order for me would be 12 crispy strips and a box of potato wedges. A trip the the Chinese food restaurant for a take out order would easily cost me $50.00 or more.
At some point it had to stop so I did it. I went from eating all that crap to eating healthy meals I prepare myself and most importantly normal portions.
Now instead of potato stix or chips I have a small bowl of fresh fruit. Instead of KFC I'll have a piece of baked chicken with a baked potato and a side of veggies. It hasn't been easy , more than once I've hit the drive through a Burger King and chowed down on a couple whoppers and fries. It's easier now that more time has passed. I just had to retrain my brain. I used to eat for pleasure , now I eat for survival.
Since age 50 I've weighed between 240 and 260. 5'10" at 260 is effing fat I'll tell you. Just changing my bad eating habits I'm now at 212. Even now at 212 I'm still way overweight but the difference in everything I do is amazing. Got sick of being that overweight , started taking a toll on my ability to do my job. Painting is very physical. 37 more pounds to go and I'll be good at 175. Don't want to get any lighter then that , it would be to easy to knock me over. I figure I should be able to shed that 37 by the end of the year.
Stay motivated.Comment

Re: 2020 Fitness Adventures
Yeah, portion control is just as important as what you're eating. Heck, you can eat McDonald's if you want if you keep your portions under control.
Most nights I don't go back for seconds when I did pretty normally. Its pretty amazing how quickly you'll notice the change once you try to eat more - I've noticed I become full a lot quicker than I used to.
