This is how I always tried to justify the hobby to my boomer parents (don't mean that derogatively, they're actually from that generation and had different values). I don't know if they ever really bought into that explanation, but they never really stopped me or pushed back on it either.

I used to be well over 1000 hours per year on The Show, and am still consistently around 500-600 hours on each year's game today. Even just one game in that series pays for itself over and over again in the time I spend with it. And since I'm also big into single player RPG's (many of which are massive time sinks) it applies to those as well.

Same. For something like recent Mass Effect remastered trilogy, I got it for I think $20? Had played the games on the 360 but on PC with mods I easily I got 100-150 hours out of it. Same for games like Persona 5 Royal. Don't even get me started on stuff like Skyrim.


I haven't been to the movies in years tbh, I just wait for stuff to go on streaming.

The number of hours of use I've gotten out of "College Football 25" is absolutely insane. In terms of cost per hour of entertainment, the denominator there is so large that it's basically approaching free.

The same here and I still have no desire to stop playing despite this suppose to be the dog days of it. When you factor in what movies, attraction or a meal out its such a good value for the $100 I spent on it.

I just started Fallout 4 for the first time, never played any Fallout game before, as usual I struggle and lose interest, this happens pretty much every time I start a game lol. Same happened with Red Dead 2, I remember playing the first one and just enjoying being out in the wild doing random stuff, but man this one was such a movie at the start, I'm like I want to play, not watch!

Saw an ad on TV that sounds so desperate. Forgot the company, but it's one of those loyalty points ones almost begging people to use their reward points. They kept being like "why continue to save up your rewards points, use them today!" As if people banking reward points is now a bad thing? I get they want people to use it so that you spend money in addition to the reward redemption (like if you redeem it for a trip, you're also spending money on the trip), but that just sounds so desperate on their end.

Not a surprise, but it's also like companies don't understand the average person probably doesn't have enough reward points to redeem it for anything decent, and anyone who does have enough points probably has had to save for many years and won't just spend it on an impulsive trip or reward just because.

I can't remember last time I've been to the movies either. Movies are like sporting events in the sense that you're really just paying for the experience when you could just watch it at home (in a movies case in a few months) without having to spend the time/money you'd be spending to go out to the movies.

There's only 1 movie theatre that I know of within my neighbourhood, and that one is at risk of being shut down. Main reason is because of developer money (building a dozen condos is more valuable than a movie theatre), but it also goes to show how much things have died out. You'll still always see cars in the parking lot, but it's almost like things will go back in time where there's no need for standalone movie theatres with dozens of screens/VIP lounge and arcades and all that stuff, but instead we'll just have more theatres in malls with fewer screens and certain movies only airing a few times a day for a shorter period of time.

Same. I'm sure I can't pick out every example and I can't really tell you what specifically I do pick up on but there's a certain kind of fakeness to it that I sense.
