oh and I totally agree about the nature shows, even now I still watch them lol, had to remind myself football was on the other day because I was so caught up in Planet Earth

I should mention that yes, the built-in tuner probably got most of the stations to which I'm referring. But getting Chargers games on CBS was also a delight pointing the antenna in a certain direction when I was in my dorm room 11 stories above the ground. What a treat!

SD just bothers me, now. Kind of like DVD. Then again, I have yet to upgrade to 4K. My friends have them (even OLED's), and I see them in stores all the time... just doesn't match up to the life I still want to give my Sammy plasma screen. I kind of just want to skip that generation of technology. I'll be ready for a new TV in maybe three years or so when they figure it all out, maybe even bringing back 3D into some sets after the two new Avatar films come out, heh.

for real. that is the movie. that's like removing Anthony Hopkins 15 minutes from Silence of the Lambs. but hey, it's only 15 minutes so what's the big deal?

Which made me realize anyone under the age of 18 years old probably doesn't remember life before HD, many of which were born after HD became the norm. 18 years old!

It was an adjustment for me when it first happened since I bought an HDTV but so many shows were in SD so it felt weird seeing a screen with black bars, but I adjusted.

And networks tried adding graphics on the 4:3 videos so there wouldn't be black bars, but just some graphic banners instead, or some blurred bar video too. Seems like most ditched that. Although some still have fully zoomed in versions of shows like Simpsons and Fresh Prince which isn't always so good.

you know you're old when you can remember only having 4 channels to watch.

and really just 3, because the local CBS affiliate was too far away for your antenna to pick up reliably

My TV used to go up to about 60 channels or so. Yes, I know that doesn't count as real old lol.

Although I did have those old handheld TVs with the giant antennas on them. Too bad it's pointless now since they dont broadcast that way anymore.

I used to be able to pick up regular channels which I watched at school on occasion, and depending on the day and where in the house I was, I could pick up US channels on it. It was so cool getting WB on it.

Channels are still broadcast that way over the air.

I dont think it is in Canada, unless I misunderstood it.

I know several years back they had ads on TV telling everyone that if they didn't have some sort of digital box for their TV, or an adapter, they wouldn't get any channels. In the past I know there were maybe 2 or 3 channels you could get without even having cable. None of that is possible anymore, and the handheld TV which I still have doesn't pick up anything.

That change was about the type of signal TV's could receive. Any modern TV can still receive over the air TV signals with an antenna. Without trying to be insensitive, those messages were mainly targeting people still using a very old model TV to just view a few channels (mostly for local news or soaps).

(And there are plenty of over the air stations available in Toronto today, many in HD)

You're right about those mini TV's though, without checking I think it's safe to assume that tech wouldn't be compatible today.

Wow - I totally forgot about handheld TVs existing until just now. I remember someone getting one for my grandfather so he could watch Cubs games while he was working.

Probably haven't thought about that thing in 20 years. Damn.

I've never had a built in tuner, I've used external HD antennas for 15+ years, and remember the issues of SD antennas for 15 years prior.

The art of finding the sweet spot for each channel was something special, and if someone stood in a spot that interfered with the reception they got assaulted lol

I never get how this is even a thing. There's 0 scientific evidence that this even accurately predicts anything. Its just math. 50% chance of being right. We could call it coin flip day and have same chance of getting it right.
