so I was listening to CBS sports radio in the car earlier (don't know who the host was, Ken Something Or Another). anywho, he was listing his Top 5 Non-Sports Video Games Of All-Time. he had Crash Bandicoot, Sonic The Hedgehog, Goldeneye on there, which is fine. but at number 1, I felt like he cheated. he went with Mario Cart, which is racing, which is a sport, no matter what discipline we're talking about: foot racing, swimming, bicycles, motor racing, what have you.

so, is Mario Kart a sports game or not?

      and... GO!

I think if you spell the game title incorrectly, your opinion automatically becomes invalid.

No, I do not consider it a sports game. That may be unfair to say, but I don't think Gran Turismo is either for that matter. Not until you start doing things like NASCAR, rally car, ATV, dirt bike, etc. do I start calling them sports titles. Don't know why. It's competitive racing though, that's for sure.

You reminded me of a brain fart story (which I may have posted at one point before). I accidentally typed "crashbandicoot" at the end of a URL instead of "crashbarrier" from a link provided by another teacher, and it ended up bringing me to Brazzers... at school. Thankfully the site was blocked, but why in the hell did typing "crashbandicoot" bring me there? To this day, I still don't know. And yes, the link is still active.

actually, I'll admit my opinion probably is invalid either for or against Mario Kart being a sports game or not because I missed out on all things Nintendo though I did briefly play some Tecmo Bowl back in the day because my younger brother grew up in the Nintendo heyday. which is why I didn't know how to spell

Mario Kart I wouldn't call a sports game, more like an arcade racing game.

Although I don't consider something like Nascar to be a sport either.

It seems that sometimes people only call something a "sport" if they consider their participants to be called "athletes." In which case, often times you won't hear people call NASCAR participants "athletes," just "drivers" or "racers."

This does not mean you don't require some form of rigorous conditioning to endure what it is you're doing, of course.

I don't really consider motor racers athletes but I'd definitely call NASCAR & F1 sports, especially if hunting & fishing are sport

Horse racing, car racing, fishing, gymnastics I don't consider sports.

Even table tennis, I consider that more as a game than a sport.

I've said a sport is something you see at the olympics, but we all know the issue there given the things which are or aren't events there.

For me "Sports games" are those that represent real-life sports with real-life teams and leagues or provide an at least somewhat accurate simulation of such. So yeah, Mario Kart is definitely not a sports game (and neither is the Gran Turismo franchise) Mario Kart is an arcade fantasy racing game while GT is a simulation racing game. I guess you could break things down into Simulaltion sports (e.g. Madden, MLB the Show, NASCAR Heat, F1, etc.) vs. arcade/fantasy sports (e.g. Mutant League Football, NBA Jam, etc.). I don't know, I guess it gets kind of muddled in some areas at least.

Same. The saddest thing in the world is the idea of wasting life in constant fear for what might/could happen. And there are plenty of people/outlets willing to hook people on that addiction for profit.

Sports channels nowadays are something else.

Who honestly thought poker on a sports channel is a good idea? Its popular sure, but that'd be like airing a sitcom on ESPN. Makes no sense.

Poker, horse racing, fishing, lumberjack comps(this is a Canadian thing), dog shows, boating, how are any of those on the same sports network airing pro sports.

ESPN can get away with it because they are "Entertainment & Sports Programming Network."

I was actually always more offended when Baseball Tonight's "Web Gems" segment showed a defensive highlight that never included the glove or had nothing to do with catching the ball (like throwing out a runner). I also would feel similar if SportsCenter's "Top Plays" showed something like the a PG dribbling out the final seconds of the NBA Finals, or them showing like a candlelight vigil of someone who has passed.

I'm not saying they aren't noteworthy, but I thought there was a semantics mismatch.

Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, it is right there in the name. Plus ESPN (a panel to be exact) themselves selected Secretariat (the horse) as the 35th greatest athlete of the 20th century in their SportsCentury series so you are way off regarding ESPN and what they consider sports.

The first thing you gotta do is define what a sport is, "things that are in the Olympics" isn't good enough.
