Re: We need a little Christmas!

I lost my dad in May so this will be our first Christmas without him. I don't know I feel I mentioned that here or not. He had cancer and doctors thought he would have another 8-12 months. It's going to be hard this year.

My wife and I are putting our tree up Saturday. I love the light the tree gives off.

      Sorry for your loss Jeremy
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine how you feel. My wife lost her father in March to Covid, so she is going through the same thing. It will definitely be difficult for you and your family, however remember your love for your father and that he would want you celebrate and enjoy the time with your family. Stay strong and know you have a group of us here if you need someone to vent to.

I watched the Star Wars Lego Christmas Special yesterday. It was awesome and shows you a little bit of what happens after The Rise of Skywalker. They did a good job. I love Star Wars so I may be a bit biased, but they did a great job showing the way they celebrate Life Day in a galaxy far far away.

on Thanksgiving I like having the 2 or 3 NFL games on for background ambience, even though no one is usually paying full attention to much going on in those games (we're mostly a college football family). same thing goes for Christmas day, for I'm guessing what, the last 10-12 years? just replace those NFL Thanksgiving games with A Christmas Story on Christmas day, playing around-the-clock. there are certain scenes I always try to catch, and hope to see 3 or 4 times that day, like the old man changing the tire scene and right after, and the end at the restaurant where the owner (?) is trying to get his employees to pronounce fa-ra-ra-ra more Englishy. [spoiler] maybe I should have used spoilers lol [spoiler]. also, I know I could just buy Christmas Story on dvd and play it myself, but that just wouldn't quite be the same. maybe I'll do that if TBS quits airing all day long Christmas day. what's funny is I used to think it was crazy for TBS to play it all day

^ No matter how many times I watch it I still cry my eyes out when he gets his gun. As soon as his dad says, "What's that behind the desk?", The waterworks start.

Re: We need a little Christmas!

Got all Christmas lights up outside.

Coincidence or not...someone else on my street put up their lights later on that day. And my neighbors finally threw away their halloween pumpkins.

The 1 tradition I know can be kept this year regardless of a pandemic is driving around town seeing all the Christmas lights and displays. Wouldn't be surprised to see more people do it. You're warm and distant from others while still getting to see Christmas displays. Throw in the Christmas music playing in the car for those few hours and it's such a fun evening.

That's one tradition for sure I'll try my best to pass down to future generations.

I feel like I asked it in a past years thread but I forgot the answers.

Christmas Trees. White or colored lights, and why?

I've always been partial to colored lights. It just stands/jumps out more to me. But I've heard others saying white has a fancier/modern feel to it.

For a tree? White's a cleaner look, but multicolored is always Christmas to me.

Other decorations can be whatever. Like...some garland w/ white lights wrapped around and down a railing? Awesome.

That is something I really miss doing tbh. Good memories as a kid of driving with my family checking out the one or two extravagantly decorated houses in the area.

Any good spotify recommendations on instrumental playlists? I like these bigger ones with entire orchestras playing, but I've never cared to hear the non hits as much, but the same classics done in various styles, instrumentals specifically is always nice to hear and doesn't get as repetitive compared to lyrical versions where diff peoples versions are basically the same.

For me, it's not even about seeing those over the top, clearly professionally done houses (although they are nice, some neighborhoods around here have multi million dollar houses on their street where many do get them done up). Just regular streets with lights put up from regular people is nice too. Although I like going through some parts of downtown too and seeing the "flagship stores" with all their lights and window displays.

I was a white Christmas tree lights guy until I had children and my daughter prefers the multi-colored lights. Thankfully my tree can switch between the two.

I had to drop Jingle Bells from my Christmas songs list after I recently found out it's a Thanksgiving song lol

Re: We need a little Christmas!

My parents, two sisters with their families and my family will be self isolating for 2 weeks before Christmas so we can all safely spend Christmas Day together. I am thankful that we are all in positions where we can do that and at the same time, my heart breaks for those who will not be able to see those they love.

With the different restrictions that are coming down from those we elect, I hope that they are also considering the emotional well being of us as well. The holidays are very hard for many people and I would hate for them to suffer more because of restrictions that may be put on us. I am tip toeing around any political discussions because I do not want to break any of the OS rules, I am just considered for those who suffer silently during the holidays.

Whatever your local restrictions are, I ask that you all stay safe and try your best to have the best Christmas possible during this unbelievable year.
