    I like the post counts.

Dude, my mortgage wasn't as long as your post. I am part of the MTV generation with a limited attention span. Could you please shorten and dumb down your next posts for people like me.

It's just another stereotype in this internet driven world of ours.

It's bound to stay that way for years to come.

if a "newbie" has a valid statement, his post count won't come into play, it'll be all about the susbtance of his posts.

but more often than not, that "newbie" is the one remaking the sterotype by acting up.

Re: Why Not Get Rid of \"Post Count\" Altogether?

At another board i frequent regularly they have just decided to remove post counts and only have them available when you click on the person's profile as was suggested by another poster in this thread. So far the results have been nothing but positive. People still know who the 'old school' veterans are by their user names and it has dramatically reduced all of the spamming which was becoming a problem. Now each post is judged on it's individual merits and people posts are simply not ingored due to a small post count which does happen at OS at times.

I suppose on the other side of the equation is that veterans with high post counts feel that they deserve more recognition because of the time they have put in over the past months/years which is fair enough. I guess though that at the end of the day it doesn't really matter how many posts you have if the content is poor, people with high post counts (but a lack of knowledge/social skills) are still ignored also. If people post quality and not quantity then their opinions will still be valued here which is all good.

Re: Why Not Get Rid of \"Post Count\" Altogether?

As much as I agree with the BIG PICTURE lack of use for the Post Count, I believe it does serve a purpose. Hierchy is not accurate, but it does give a sense of commitment (or needing to be commited) to the boards. Some people are just Post Whores yes ((cough...Dookie...cough)), but it does show something.

For me personally it's the combination of the Registered Date and Post Count that I pay attention to as a Mod. If they registerd on 7/18/02 (1st day of the new forum) and only have 75-80 posts, I assume they are a reader, lurker that only chime in when really struck. Great! But at the sametime, if their Date is yesterday, they have 7 posts, and they are already Flaming, then the "red flag" goes up that this person needs to be monitored a little closer.

The word often used is Community. That's how boards are. Steve is the absent-minded Mayor. BDitty the dirty Sherrif with Bkrich his trusty Barney Fife. Heel (to bring post counts full circle) is like the town drunk. He just wanders around the community spouting off useless facts and opinions. But you gotta love the town drunk!!
