    Embedded malware??

Earlier this afternoon I checked a couple of threads that I had posted in earlier in the day and withing about 2 minutes of viewing them I started getting this some kind of security software popup repeatedly then started getting a bunch of messages that said I computer was infected with a bunch of different crap. I disconnected my computer from the internet and ran a full scan with my antivirus spyware which only piced up some cookies. I looked at the logs though and it said it did block a trojan around 3:18 this afternoon (approximately when I was viewing those 2 threads). Not sure if someone had something embedded in their post or something or even if it came from here, but it did start right after I visited the site. My computer seems fine now though.

Anyways, the 2 threads I viewed prior to this episode were as follows
    - 2010 transfer thread in College Football section
    - Simpsons or Futurama in Entertainment and Technology section.

Again, not sure if it came from here, but the timing seems right.
Steelers : IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, XLIII
    Penguins : 1990/91, 1991/92, 2008/09, 20015/16, 2016/17
    Pirates : 1909, 1925, 1960, 1971, 1979
    Panthers (FB): 1915, 1916, 1918, 1929, 1931, 1934, 1936, 1937, 1976
    Panthers (MBB): 1927/28, 1929/30

If you or anyone else notice it again, post more specific pages that you were on and I'll look into it.

I just got attacked by the same thing.

I was browsing in the Manny vs. Clottey thread in the boxing forums anonymously and a pop up asked me to install the latest anti-virus software kicking me out of OS. I didn't take a screen shot as I just wanted to shut the browser down. I am using Fire Fox on Windows XP.

        Re: Embedded malware??

Okay, this has happened 2 nights in a row now. I was browsing the forums and all of the sudden my browser window closes and I get this message window saying something to the effect of "wanrning your computer shows signs of being infected with viruses or other malware" and wants be to click okay to do a scan and download something from the internet. Last night it started doing a scan of some sort before I closed it and disconnected from the internet and ran a deep scan with my antivurus/antimalware software which only turned up the usual cookies. This time I was able to close the window without it doing anything. It happened while I was looking at the "Coke Zero" thread in OS neighborhood last night and while in the OS neighborhood forum tonight.

I don't know what is going on or why this keeps happening, but I have now gotten some sort of malware or malware type event (including 1 very serious infection) 4 times in the past 2 months and all of them were initiated while I was on this site.

Could it be that one or more of the ads that appear on the left side of the screen have been hacked and embedded with some sort of malicious code? Unfortunately I don't know which ads were displaying when this happened each of the past 2 nights as I never pay any attention to them.

Any specific thread while in the neighborhood today?

I'll be looking at the Coke thread in just a second.

Update- Just looked through the Coke thread and didn't come across any java type scripts.

No, I was just in the OS Neighborhood forums, no specific thread. I've actually been in the coke thread several more times with no problem which leads me to suspect one of the ads that show up on the left side of the screen may be corrupted or something.

Hmm. I'm sure Bronco will look into it tomorrow morning. For now, just keep up your anti-virus obviously and don't accept or ok anything from a popup, which you've been doing.

Also, if it comes up again tonight for some reason, try and see what ads are up at that point

Ok I just got totally NAILED by the infamous Antivirus XP 2010. (Its the crap that impersonates a real virus program etc)
I had to shut down and now am looking into ways to get rid of it. I'll PM bronco on the details.

                    Re: Embedded malware??

I was hit by this on Sunday as well. I was looking at the MLB 2k10 Gameplay video and I got infected. It took me three hours to get it to go away. It was at about 11 AM CST that I got a ton of pop ups from Antivirsu XP 2010.

It started to block me out of the internet and everything but I used Spyware Doctor and it got rid of everything. It was frustrating as hell though.

If you look for Spyware Doctor free on YouTube theres one with a name and activation code that lets you use it for a year. It sounds fishy but it totally worked. I just downloaded the trial and used the code.

EDIT: It gives you a site to download from but I got it from the legit PC Tools website. IDK if the site they give is legit but the code and everything worked without a problem. It even got rid of a bunch of tracking cookies I had.

                        Re: Embedded malware??

I just got hijacked again. The program is XP-AntiSpyware 2010 and it automatically installs on your system.

I was in the non-sports gaming>Heavy Rain forum and Windows Security Center popped up for no reason.

                        Then this started running.

Malwarebytes cleared it, but I had to change the file extension to .com as it disables all antimalware exe files. I can show you the log files of Malwarebytes if needed.

                          There's something "phishy" about this.

                          Yeah I already know.....

Seriously though, that is very weird. I haven't encountered this and I hope I never do. I hope you guys' systems weren't affected.
