EPL fed off of that along with numerous other things, and look where they are now.

The MLS is following that same exact trend, and with increasing deals with sponsors and TV, it'll only be a decade or two before it's easily in the top 8 at least.

Keep in mind that only 8 years ago, David Beckham was coming in and no one really cared much about American soccer. Now look where it is, and look how far it has come. And the league is only 20 years of age this year, as compared to leagues/team that've been around since the turn of last century.
Hope this doesn't come across as me being a dick. Just putting some facts out there. I've been reading up on all this lately. I find it all very fascinating. The history of all the leagues.

The EPL wasn't formed until 1992. That is right, one year before MLS. They didn't exist in the 70's and 80's. Before the EPL there was just Division 1-4 of The Football League. And Division 1 wasn't anywhere nears as popular as Serie A, Ligue 1 and Bundesliga. After the EPL was formed they then split into three smaller levels below the EPL. Which are all three still apart of the The Football League. The EPL is the top of this, but is not actually apart of them. They just work with them.

And the EPL most certainly did not feed off old players from other leagues at its conception. It feed off TV money. The whole point of the EPL was to break away from the Football League federation to start the TV trends you see now, and to get that money to grow the league. The teams back then were not getting the TV money from the Federation. Its why they broke off. This lead to top players being bought from France, Germany, Italy and Spain. They had the money to bring the top tier guys over from other leagues. And make the TV deals more lucrative, because now not just England was watching the top English division.

This is now starting to happen with MLS also. Its not just the older names who are about to retire coming to MLS. A lot of young up and coming talents (dos Santos and others) are starting to come over from Mexico, South America and some of Europe. They are getting bigger contracts and more playing time sooner in their careers. This is feeding the interest and making the TV deal much more lucrative, giving the league more money to keep growing. I was watching a League 2 game on Euro Sports (or maybe it was sky2?) yesterday, and saw an MLS ad for games on English TV. MLS is also on TV in Canada and Mexico now.

However most Europeans don't care for MLS due to the systems setup. No relegation with another league, the odd season duration (played when all summer cups are played), a playoff system, etc. Its not going to take off anywhere outside of North and South American I'm afraid. We are very similar to the Belgium league. Which isn't very popular outside of Belgium.

And while I am at it, some more fun facts.

The three tier system of Football League Championship, Football League 1 and 2 wasn't formed until 2004.

Only 5 teams have ever won an EPL title. Manchester United (13), Chelsea (4), Arsenal (3), Manchester City (2) and Blackburn Rovers (1)

Seven clubs have been members of the EPL for every season since its inception: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Even though MLS was founded in 1993, no season was played until 1996. It was originally founded to get the 1994 World Cup bid. The first season only had 10 teams. Only two teams didn't make the playoffs that year.

In MLS, the league owns all the teams. The investors are referred to as the owners, but they don't actually own them. This is why there is no promotion and relegation with the NASL. As such, the league owns all player contracts.

The original NASL played from 1968 until 1984.

Rangers F.C. of Scottish Championship, are the most successful football club of all time. Rangers have won more league titles and trebles than any other club in the world, winning the league title 54 times, the Scottish Cup 33 times and the Scottish League Cup 27 times, and achieving the treble of all three in the same season seven times. Rangers was the first British club to reach a UEFA tournament final and won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972.

    Okay, I'll stop now.

Oh, and I forgot the on topic part. I don't expect MLS to get the same level of treatment for at least two more years. Not until the other bigger leagues are all handled.

The EPL MLS comparison doesn't really make any sense. The United States had ZERO soccer foundation. It was basically introducing the sport to the world, whereas England had a strong foundation to build upon. It would be like England starting a professional football (American football) league and the U.S. starting a professional football league to replace the NFL and expecting both to grow at the same rate.

Also, the MLS is almost undoubtedly first or second on the list of leagues to get the treatment. After La Liga there isn't another league anywhere in the world that would be more lucrative for EA than the MLS. It's not even close.

I think Serie A would do more than the MLS.

Totally disagree with you on this. Let's not act like the EPL is on the same level as the NBA, NFL or even MLB here. And to say Americans get more exposure to the EPL is nuts!!!

Well, there are different ways to read the numbers to skew it that way, at least from a television ratings perspective. For example, apparently the EPL season closer was viewed in more homes in the States than in England, which sounds impressive until you consider that there are far more homes to broadcast to.
