For my franchise, I know I have a CDM and a CAM on my bench. So I choose formations that use them, because when I sub in game, I know who I will be looking for most of the time.

If I get creative, yes, I check all my positions.
With all due respect, you completely ignored my question. I'm not asking for solutions - I understand this can be mitigated.

But this system was developed with FUT in mind, where no one plays the same formation on all setups and that's not expected, loads of people have complained about this issue, I think everyone agrees it's too tedious right now - especially when playing shorter online matches - and I see no reason to think this isn't anything but another of the multitude of examples of a feature not working correctly in this game right now.

If this is really an okay system to you, then we'll just have to agree to disagree bc IMO the current team sheet system is a mess and isn't anywhere near what it needs to be considering how important formations/tactics/instructions have become. To each's own though, cheers.

But it takes less than what, 20 seconds to organize before starting a game? You scroll through your attacking/ultra/defending/ultra tabs, switch or mitigate as best you can the out of position players and it's done. People strive for and talk about wanting realism/a proper simulation but when it comes to actually organizing your team, don't want to spend the bare minimum amount of time before each game tweaking them to suit the upcoming opponent/game? What would the solution be? Having some kind of automated guesswork by the computer where players should be based on their positions? That would just lead to more issues/problems based on people's preferences. Maybe a prompt/reminder before the game starts or make it so you have to accept all 5 settings beforehand so you see all of your lineups could work because personally, I just don't see how something that takes such a little amount of time to sort can be seen as such a big issue.
      Yeah.

But it's only broken if you "play like FUT" then? Because, as I pointed out, if you do not change formations based on attacking or defending, you will not have this problem. But if you go in and plug in a new formation, and now you have 1 striker instead of two, where do you start placing people? The extra striker might go to a LW or LM or CM, or CAM. And if he has a secondary position, he will go to that one. Then that player has to move to a new position and we start all over again.

If you change the balance of backs, midfielders and attackers, guys will be out of position. If you want a more casual experience, then do not change formations.

true, all of us, in words, we would like the simulation but we are lazy to manage it and we would like some kind of plug / simulation and play

I think the solution is to first set up all five formations by foreseeing the various phases of the game, i.e. I go into ultra offensive the team sides with the players in the positions we have set and eventually make the right substitutions

I believe it works as intended but doesn't function as intelligently as it could and isn't really the best system to begin. Changing adjusting players in the balanced formation should probably adjust the other four options automatically unless the formation in those options is switched to something different from the balanced set.

A More realistic mechanic would be to adopt a Football Manager type setup where you can setup phases of play like Attacking/Transition/Defending. This better represents a teams tactical style over w course of a game. They can be all the same formation or they can be different for example your base formation is a 3-5-2 but when defending your a 5-3-2 wing backs behave like proper fullbacks so they will always try to form that solid back line. You can kind of do this with player instructions now but it's not as fluid.

The player instructions tab could probably become and behave as the the 5 ATK/DEF options work now so you and work in conjunction with the phases as your more likely to change player instructions on the fly than your entire gameplan over the course of a game.
