Haha, a real live Dortmund fan, eh? I knew about their incredible support and recent struggles, which was the main reason I chose them. I'm becoming somewhat of a fan by playing my MM with them, but unfortunately I never get to see any real games. The US TV coverage of the Bundesliga on GolTV only shows two games per week and I can't remember the last time Dortmund was on...

Oh and I won the DFB Pokal. I actually had to play it a third time after the second one froze on the post-game highlights. I won the 3rd attempt 9-4! I've never seen a score line like that. What's weird is of the 13 goals, only 3 were scored after the 60 minute mark or what would've been the end of a 10min half game. I just couldn't miss -- I think 9 of my 13 on target shots went in -- and the CPU seemed determined to make it a game.

I'm currently taking a few days break for an off-season rest, although I did play one of my friendlies to see if my two transfers went through -- signed Marcel Jansen from Hamburg (he was listed) for 5.5M and a 19 year old 78 OVR CB from a Czech team... for only 1.6M!

FA Cup: Currently made it to the 3rd round.

League Table: (6-4-8: 14th) Started out the season very well, 2-1-1, 8th in the table. Wins against Tottenham and Sunderland, draw against Chelsea, and then took a thrashing at the hands of Stoke City. After my great start, Halmosi, my star LM went down for 4 weeks, then my star ST Altidore was out for 2 weeks after Halmosi returned. We went 1-1-5 through those 7 or 8 weeks, with many tough losses. We should have knocked off both Arsenal and Man U, and Liverpool got a last second goal from Torres to win 1-0. We seemed to play well against top teams, and then struggle with the bottom feeders. Managed to win all the cup games though. Lately we have been playing well, although we played against Burnely and Fulham, who were 19th and 20th in the table. We have gone 3-2-2 in our last 7 games, and are about to play Everton in the 4th round or the English Cup.

Top Scorers: Altidore-11(Hat Trick against Burnely), Jovetic-4, Maria Capriari-4
Man, I've never seen an injury longer than 1 week in my MM. I'm actually look forward to it, haha.

Jansen is pretty good. I signed him in '08 with Palermo and he helped solidify the Rosanero's backline along with Micah Richards (who is still rated incredibly way to high in '10).

You know you're having a good time with your MM when you actively try to follow your club in real life. I pretty much watch every Roma match that is on TV these days.

I think you only see injuries longer than 1 week if you sim the games. Every time I've had a player get hurt when playing a game it's been 1 week.

And I don't want to sell anyone of value -- I did offload 3 60ish youngsters for about 4.5M combined -- with the Champions League added to my schedule. So I was looking for some versatility/depth, preferably on the left side... enter Mr. Jansen.

I'm going to start him at LB, but I now have him, Dede and my VP to rotate on the left side, plus a young 69ovr LB in Schmelzer if I need him. My VP is pretty well-rounded, so bringing Jansen in will allow me to move him around to fill holes in the lineup when fatigue hits.

I think the CB is a generated player, as I can't find him on the internet or Ceske Budejovice's real life squad (plus no in-game pic). But I'm excited to see him debut in my next friendly -- he's only 6-1, but has high 80s/low 90s jumping, strength, tackling. Not the quickest player, but he's about the same as my other CBs in movement. At the very least, I bought him for 1.6M and he's listed at 5.5M after switching... shrewd bit of business there.

Sort of... but I did buy someone who's not a teenager and that's very un-Wenger-like.

Re: FIFA 10 MANAGER MODE Progress thread

Can someone explain to me the whole cup/league thing in England?

I'm in League 2. There's what, 3 more leagues above me?

I play in these cup tournaments against teams from other leagues that are rated way higher then my crappy 1* team. Are they from higher leagues? Is there a point in winning these cups besides just winning the hard ware?

One of my goals is to avoid the relagation zone? What does that mean? I'm guessing teams can move up and down between leagues, how does that work?

                  Thanks!

                    Nevermind. Google is my friend.

I was in the relagation zone, but the game doesn't have the Conference National.

Now let's see if I can find out how the cups work.

In England the levels of leagues are, The Premier League, The Championship, League 1, and League 2. There are more, but I don't think EA has anything lower than League 2.

Cups- I've never played anything lower than the Championship so this might be a bit inaccurate. There should be an English Cup(FA Cup I think) and the League Cup(Carling),(in reality there should be a third for those in League 1 and below).

In the Cups, depending on the draw, you can play anyone from EPL, Championship, L1, and L2.

Relegation- If you finished in the bottom 4, you'll get relegated, ie dropped down a league.
If you finish in the Top 2?(Finishing in positions 3-6? should put you in a playoff, to get promoted) You'll get automatic promotion ie moved up a league. Meaning you should at least finish in 20th or better to meet your goal.

Also Cup matches in the game should be One-legged matches, meaning if tied after 90 minutes, games goes to Extra Time then PKs if tied then.

                            1. Yes, if you do better than expected in the cups, you'll get extra manager prestige, which is the key to landing a job with a better club. Plus, if you're the home team in a cup game, you get the ticket revenue and if you win, your sponsor's victory payment. So a good cup run could help you add some cash to your club budget.

If you do worse than your board expectation, the board confidence will drop and you might get fired. A few guys around here can emphasize the importance of meeting your cup goals...

                            2. Like you found on your own, in real life, a League 2 team could be relegated to the next league down. Since they're not in, it's the "relegation zone" in name only, but you'll still want to stay out of the basement to keep your board confidence up. The better your standing in relation to your league objective, the more confidence the board will have in you.

For example, as Dortmund (German league) my goal was to finish in the top half of the league and make the cup quarter finals. I finished second and won the cup; my board confidence is currently at 100% heading into season two (hello achievement!).

On a side note, I think England is the hardest league to start in with a lousy team due to the plethora of matches you have to play. Lower league schedules are packed with 46 league games and two cups (if you advance). Compare that to Germany (34 games/1 cup) or almost any other European league which usually has 38 games & one cup. It can be very difficult to play all those games with a weak squad and little to no depth. But, battling through that and slowly climbing the ladder through multiple leagues could be quite rewarding I suppose...
