    '18-'19 February Update

    The Roster
    Spoiler

    Starting XI (4-4-2 Diamond Wide)

    Martinez (C, 72)

    Odubajo (72)/Luan (75)/Vegas (73)/B-Williams (75)

    Ince (76)

    Giles (71) ------------------ B. Moore (73)

    Gordon (76)

    Ambrose (77) ------- Ringdal Støvland (68)

    ___________________________________

    League Match 28
    Newport County - Bolton (0-0)
Giles 15' (Bruised elbow, out 5 days)

The Exiles won possession (54%) and took 10 shots (4 on goal) but had nothing to show for after this game other than a solid defense that allowed them to earn a point, although it's more like losing two points considering the opponent has been a mid-table team at best.

    League Match 29
Charlton Ath - Newport County (1-3)
    Mayada 20'
    In Beom 23' (P. Miller)
    Fernandes 73' (Feddal)
    Potter 78' (Feddal)

The B-team snapped The Exiles out of its scoring funk, scoring two goals in a five-minute span in the second half to give Newport County a comfortable win at The Valley. The statistics were very similar to the previous game (53% possession, 10 shots, 6 on goal) but the result was much better.

    League Match 30
    Newport County - Nott'm Forest (0-3)
    Assombalonga 7'
    Ward 69'
    Assombalonga 85'

Britt Assombalonga practically beat The Exiles all by himself, scoring a couple of goals and netting an assist in between to lead Forest to an impressive road victory at Rodney Parade. Newport County seems to be a in scoring funk ever since selling Marcus Thuram and on games in which they give up multiple goals it's a flaw that gets highlighted. Luckily for them both Burnley and QPR also lost their respective games.

    League Match 31
Derby County - Newport County (2-1)
    Martin 5'
    Ambrose 11'
    Hendrick 43'
    Hendrick 69'

Oh-oh, it might be time to officially declare trouble at Newport County. For only the second time this season (the first being back-to-back losses to Cardiff City and QPR in September) The Exiles lost consecutive games after they failed to take advantage of having an extra man for the last 20 minutes of this game. Marccelino's squad had won the match-up earlier this season, but then again Thuram scored a poker in that one to make the difference in a 6-2 result.

This hard foul by Hendrick left Derby County with 10 men but Newport County was unable to take advantage of that.

    F.A. Cup - Round of 16
    Brentford - Newport County (1-2)
    Gordon 12' (Giles)
    Jota 17'
    Ringdal Støvland 90+' (Giles)

Whoa Nelly! The Exiles are far from breaking out of their struggling form and on this day the result could had been much different but the team's academy products came to the rescue with a lot of heart and deep in stoppage time (on what would be the last play of the game) Jack Giles dribbled down the right wing, cut into the box, and made a risky pass backwards to the top of the box where Kjetil Ringdal Støvland, the Norwegian academy-graduate replacing Thuram, fired a bullet down and to the goalkeeper's left to give Newport County a thrilling victory at a much needed time.

    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/LYQQzElA0Zw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    League Match 32
    Brighton - Newport County (0-2)
    Giles 70'
    Ambrose 89' (pen)

The Exiles played their best game this month at Falmer Stadium to hopefully put an end to their poor form. Brighton created a good number of opportunities (8 shots) but Newport County's defense made it difficult for them to find the goal (2 shots on target) while the visiting offense looked like the Newport County of earlier in the season firing 14 shots (11 on goal).

    Top Scorers
    1. Ambrose (Newport County) - 24
    T2. Falatah (Reading) - 14
    T2. Makienok (Brentford) - 14

    Assists
    1. Gordon (Newport County) - 11
    2. Grimes (Burnley) - 7
    T3. Ambrose (Newport County) - 6
    T3. Giles (Newport County) - 6

    (7 others with 6 also)

    Clean Sheets
    1. Federici (Leeds United) - 10
    T2. Martin (Bolton) - 9
    T2. Hahn (Reading) - 9

    ...
    T3. Martinez (Newport County) - 8

Analysis: Newport County is in a funk and the press is having their way with them as their struggles coincide with the departure of their best striker, allowing the press to refer to The Exiles as being under The Marcus Thuram Curse. When broken down it's unfair to pin Newport County's poor form on Thuram's sale but in all fairness it's difficult to explain how a team that had been so good all season is suddenly finding it so difficult to score following the French striker's departure. The youngster Ringdal Støvland hasn't had much luck scoring outside of his heroic goal in the F.A. Cup but his form hasn't been bad and it wouldn't be shocking to see him break out for a few goals before season's end.

Without a doubt Giovanni Marccelino's tactics and motivational skills will be put to the test in the last three months of the season because it seems unlikely Newport County will be able to clinch direct promotion before season's end, a spot in the playoffs is hardly assured at this point, and if the club does reach the playoffs it'll need to be in much better form to be the winner. A match-up against Manchester City in the F.A. Cup quarter finals will be another great challenge for the Italian head coach who has made it no secret he wants to contend for the cup. This match-up just isn't coming at a great time for The Exiles.

    Spoiler

We can report that following the scouting assignments placed in England, Spain, and Brazil, Newport County has made additions to its youth squad:

CAM - Daniele Martella (60 OVR, 93-94 POT): Our unanimous top-prospect has recently turned 18-years old. Scouts believe his potential is higher than any of our prospects either in the academy or on the senior roster. As a result of that extra time is being spent with him to make sure he's developed at a rapid and efficient pace. He stands at 6'1" and 154lbs. He's likely to be promoted before the season ends as we try to avoid him becoming unhappy in the academy.

CDM - Doke Boëtius (63 OVR, 81-87): This 17-year old from Netherlands standing at 6'3" and 169lbs is our next top prospect at the position, joining a crowded group of youngsters at CDM (Dall'Oglio, Ichigawa, Kagome). He'll need to be patient and continue to work hard in the academy for his opportunity. He could become a loan candidate as soon as next season.

CB - Tom Maguire (48 OVR, 71-94)*: 17-year old from England following on the footsteps of Tafari Hunt and Bondz Laslie, but will Maguire be able to become a better prospect than his new English teammates? Time will tell.

CDM - Daniel Amaral (49 OVR), 70-94)*: 15-year old from Brazil whose signing has received some criticism since the club seems to be loaded at his position. However, Newport County is still very far from being the kind of team that can pass on talent so we'll just have to follow how Amaral develops.

RB - Willem Van Hout (53 OVR, 79-85): This 16-year old from Belgium is still very raw but exhibits good potential and coaches in the academy are trying to make sure he remains focused on working on developing his game. Doesn't possess the pace the team would like at the position but Marccelino is keeping more of an open mind when it comes to that after watching Nicolai Fernandes play.
    * Recent addition

    March Schedule

    3/9: vs Reading
3/16: vs Manchester City (F.A. Cup)
    3/19: vs Huddersfield
    3/23: at Blackburn Rovers
    3/30: at Sheffield Wed

The schedule doesn't care whether The Exiles are in good or bad form and it brings very difficult games for Newport County outside of them hosting the team at the bottom of the table. March has a chance to make or break Marccelino's squad.

    Thanks for reading!

        Guess who just ragequit today!

Stuttgart against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The score is 2-2 and 90 minutes are up. The referee gives two minutes of additional times which is very reasonable. What's not reasonable is what happened next.

The two minutes of added time are up but Borussia are on the attack so the referee lets game go on. Soon the stoppage time timer hits three minutes, but the game is still going on. Nothing new there, I think to myself, as there are almost every time a couple of minutes of extra added to the stoppage time given by the game. The timer hits four minutes and we clear a corner kick. This is getting weird now, I utter quietly. Five minutes. Six minutes. Seven minutes of stoppage time have been played, even though no major pauses have occurred in stoppage time. Eight minutes. Nine minutes! Remember, the indicated time was only two minutes.

We cleared the ball several times out of our defensive third during those nine minutes, but the referee did nothing. Soon the timer hit the time 9:51 _and a penalty was called in Borussia's favour_. They scored from it after playing five times the stoppage time and, needless to say, I just turned my PS off.

                Season 1

                The Sky Blues

                November 2015

We finished last month at the top of the table, despite our ups and downs, we have proven that we just might be able to accomplish the goal of a league title. But lets not get ahead of ourselves for now. We've seen what can happen when we get too confident. For now though our attention shifts to Fleetwood Town. They are coming into Ricoh Arena and they are currently sitting in the relegation zone. They run a 4-3-3 and we had success earlier in the season against that formation by using a 4-2-2-2 so we go back to that for this one. Armstrong pairs up front with Henderson, Murphy and Jones go out on the wings, and Rose comes back into the squad to partner with Vincelot in the middle. Once again we keep the back 4 the same since they have been in fantastic form. This game will focus on Murphy and Jones taking up the open space on the wings against their formation and pushing hard to start our attacks from the outside.

                Coventry City 2 - 1 Fleetwood Town
                COV - Henderson 27', Cole 83' (PEN)
                FLE - Ryan 74'
                MOTM: Cole

The strategy works like a charm and it's Jones that gets us going when he bursts down the right wing and sends a cross in for Henderson to head into goal. After that the game died off and neither side really did much. Rose takes a knock before half and we send Joe Cole on in his place to avoid making it worse. Just as some fans might have started to doze off Jimmy Ryan ran past our defense for an easy goal where our defense was pretty much non-existent. We need a hero, and that hero is Joe Cole. He got the ball in the box and danced around the defenders until someone took him down and he left no doubt as he converted from the spot to secure the win. Despite only playing a half he made his impact felt and he earned himself man of the match. I swear sometimes it seems like this group just likes to test the limit of my blood pressure levels. We get even better news after the game as we learn that Armstrong and Rose who both took knocks will only miss 5 days each.

And now we are off to Colchester who seem to be perfectly average sitting mid table. They run the same 4-4-2 narrow diamond that we ran into twice last month in our two matches against Southend. After dropping the first of those two we switched to a 4-3-2-1 that led to a dominating win so back we go to that. Armstrong is fit so he stays up front supported by Murphy and Jones on the wings who will be called upon to be the stars of the show in this one seeing as they will have acres of space against their narrow formation. Vincelot keeps his holding role and Joe Cole and a fit again Andy Rose take the advanced two midfield spots. We make one change on the back line switching Stephens out for Martin and we get ready to take the field.

                Colchester United 0 - 1 Coventry City
                COV - Cole 48'
                MOTM: Leutwiler

What can I say, sometimes you just get lucky. Even though we won the possession battle by a mile, we were lucky that we didn't concede as many as three goals. Instead we walk away with a clean sheet and a 1-0 win. It was Jones out wide that got the ball rolling sending in a low cross after running into space and the beautiful Joe Cole was there to knock it in to score the winner for the second game in a row. Still, without Leutwiler between the sticks we wouldn't have won this one. I guess it's better to be lucky than good. We won't be celebrating this one for long as we received horrible news. Romain Vincelot, our fearless captain, will miss the next 8 weeks with a dislocated shoulder. I would have preferred the loss over this.

The world seems a little darker, but we pick ourselves and move on without our captain. Next up Doncaster who are sitting a spot below Colchester in the table at 14. They also run the diamond, but the wider version of it. I think it's best to stick with the with the same formation but we are going to switch up the instructions. This time we tell the wingers to cut inside and we are going to look to overwhelm the middle and find the seams for our runners. There will be a big gap left in the heart of the field, and we plan to make that our home in this one. Gadzhev comes on for the injured Vincelot, and due to the congestion of the fixtures, we reluctantly have to give Cole a rest and bring in the underwhelming Maddison. Those are our only two changes, but we will be having to keep an eye on fitness levels during this one having just played 3 days ago, and having another on in 3 days on top of that.

                Coventry City 2 - 1 Doncaster Rovers
                COV - Murphy 8', Armstrong 81'
                DON - Williams 31'
                MOTM: Murphy

This one started brightly with Murphy heading home a corner in the first 8 minutes to take an early lead. But the absence of Vincelot was felt as well and we never got into our rhythm in the midfield and they took advantage of it and Williams converted from the edge of the box on a shot that was initially saved but the momentum carried it in. Then the clouds cleared, the sun started shining, and the hangover that was sitting over our club went away. We flipped a switch and immediately we began to assault their goal. I swear their keeper had at least 3 hands or something and he kept us out of the net all the way up until the last 10 minutes when he saved a first shot, and then a second shot, but third time was the charm as Armstrong headed in the rebound and finally we tore down the brick wall he had been paving in that goal all half.

I feel that despite a slow first half we overcame it and finished on a strong note that we can carry forward into this next one. S****horpe is the next opponent and they are sitting just 2 points off of a playoff position. They run a pretty basic flat 4-4-2 and we should be able to handle it with a 4-2-3-1. Well at least we would be able to, but with this being our 3rd game in 6 days the fatigue is piling up. I had to cancel training for the day when I noticed the players were stumbling around like zombies. I needed these zombies as fresh as possible to finish out the month. Armstrong gets a rest and Henderson comes in for him at the front as a target man. Murphy keeps his place as he is one of the more undropable players right now, but Lameiras spells Jones on the right side. Cole comes back into the XI despite still dragging his old legs around some and Gadzhev and Rose round out the two holding players. We change each of the full backs out too but leave the center of the defense the same. If we are able to assert our will, then this one will be won in the middle as we use our 3 man midfield to overwhelm their two central players.

                S****horphe United 1 - 1 Coventry City
                SCU - Madden 38'
                COV - Murphy 8'
                MOTM: Leutwiler

This was a trap game and we were lulled right into it. Like I said, third fixture in 6 days and the players really showed it. By the second half most of the squad was huffing and puffing for air like it was the last breath they were going to take. Murphy was a bright spot once again though and he replicated his start from last game scoring in the 8th minute again. Little did we know that we might as well have packed it in then since we apparently forgot to play the rest of the match. S****horpe controlled it all from that point on. They equalized in the first half and threw everything at us after that but Leutwiler was in great form and didn't let anything past him after that. I guess a point away from home isn't a bad result, it's just performances like this leave a bad taste in my mouth.

                Youth Academy

In his last month of the scouting trip our scout gave us all of his information and we were able to sign up another young kid, Matthew Cox. Matthew is a left sided defender and he joins Seager in our under-15 side and we look forward to the two developing together. This gives us a shot at creating some chemistry on the back line that could last for over a decade if these players can realize their potential. We told our scout not to get comfortable though and we sent him right back out, this time to Scotland for another 3 month trip that we hope will continue to build up our academy.

                Amari'i Seager - 15 years old, England, CB, 57 OVR, 68-84 POT
Matthew Cox - 15 years old, England, LB, 51 OVR, 63-81 POT

Thankfully one on the benefits of not being connected to the Internet is there are no patches, so no change in gameplay for me.

Also I need an opinion from you guys. I can't decide between Kingsley Coman or Maxwel Cornet to be my back up striker and striker for the future.

Also I need an opinion from you guys. I can't decide between Kingsley Coman or Maxwel Cornet to be my back up striker and striker for the future.

Even though Coman has less potential on that version, I like him better if you are planning to use these guys as a striker.

He has better dribbling, ball control, shot power, long shots, pace, and his finishing is only 1 behind Cornet's

Thanks for the feedback, I'm going to see who is cheaper and factor that into my thinking although there shouldn't be too much of a difference in price between them.

Coman all day, every day. Also look up Saint-Maximin.

Any particular reason? Also Saint-Maximin is on loan at Hannover on my squads (28 August) from Monaco so he's out. I'll keep him on the shortlist for the future though.

I think I'm gonna go with Coman provided the price is right.
