    Season 2

    The Mariners

    October 2017

    Checkatrade Trophy
    Grimsby Town 0 (8) - (7) 0 Sheffield United
    MOTM: Lavery

Overall we had a pretty poor performance in this one, but penalties is about the result that both teams deserved to go to. We had a couple of good chances with Banton seeing a shot saved and Morris hitting another off the crossbar. After the ref blew the whistle though this one was going to have to be decided by penalties and we had ourselves one hell off a shootout. We missed our first digging ourselves into a hole early on, and it wasn't until the 5th attempt that we were able to keep one of theirs out to keep the shootout going. Our keeper saved two more and their keeper matched one of those, but was unable to keep the last one out and we were able to celebrate the win after that.

    Burton Albion 2 - 3 Grimsby Town
    BUR - Beavon 3', Ebanks-Blake 12'
    GRI - Otayn 22', Bolarinwa 52', Berrett 88'
    MOTM: Berrett

We couldn't have asked for a worse start in this one and Beavon made us pay just 3 minutes in for our terrible defending. Ebanks-Blake then added another less than 10 minutes after that as our defense continued to be a complete shambles in the back. Still we weren't ready to give up and Otayn pulled one back with a powerful shot from just inside the box. In the second half Bolarinwa was played through on goal and he hit it strong first time to beat the keeper and tie it at 2 all. The game went back and forth after that and with just a couple minutes left we drew a foul outside of the box and Berrett smashed a stunning free kick into the top corner to earn the 3 points for us.

    Grimsby Town 1 - 1 Peterborough United
    GRI - Taylor 70'
    PET - James 23'
    MOTM: Taylor

Peterborough struck first with a nice piece of build up leading to James getting through for the first time finish. We kept going after then though and finally we got it back in the second half with Taylor heading a corner home and getting a little luck with the deflection off of the defender and around the keeper. We should have had a winner after that but Wright botched his golden chance and sent it wide after finding himself through on goal.

    MK Dons 0 - 3 Grimsby Town
    GRI - Gordon 16', Bolarinwa 85', Disley 90'
    MOTM: Bolarinwa

This one was all us from the first whistle. Gordon got us started with a great goal coming up from his full back spot to smash one in. After that we held strong in the back and waited until we were able to catch them off guard on the counter as they tried to pull it back. Bolarwinwa did the first damage on the counter to extend our lead and then Disley added the cherry on top finishing off a dominating performance for us and putting us at the top of the table.

    Grimsby Town 3 - 0 Southend United
    GRI - Chambers 43', Fenton 88', Banton 90'
    MOTM: Fenton

This was without a doubt our most dominating performance yet. If not for some impressive saves from their keeper we would have scored 5 or more in this one. Chambers got us on the board first after Taylor flicked on a ball for him running into the box for the hard finish. Fenton scored the next one off of a corner when Taylor came down with the ball after it hit off the crossbar and he passed it to the middle for the easy tap in. The last one came after we got a free kick on the edge of the box. Fenton laid the ball off directly to Banton and he smashed home a left footed shot from distance to announce that he is officially back from his injury.

    EFL Cup
    Grimsby Town 3 - 0 Coventry City
    GRI - Daniel 18', 29', Bolarinwa 82'
    MOTM: Al Kuwaykibi

For our third straight match we won with a scoreline of 3-0. Daniel scored two in the first half with both being set up with great passes from Al Kuwaykibi. After that we started shutting it down and were content to just pass the ball around and defend. Late in the game we got another chance on the counter though and Banton played it through for Bolarinwa who was on as a substitute and he finished it easily.

    Port Vale 2 - 1 Grimsby Town
    PVL - Paterson 13', Cicilia 90'
    GRI - Taylor 65' (PEN)
    MOTM: Paterson

It took until the last minute of the last game of this month for our unbeaten streak to end. We almost made it the entire way, but we lost focus at the end and it cost us. Paterson got lucky off a rebound to end up with the ball for the finish to open the scoring. We couldn't find an answer until the second half when Banton drew a penalty in the box and Taylor finished it from the spot. It looked like it was going to be enough to earn a point but a completely inexcusable lapse in focus allowed Cicilia to get through on goal and slot in the winner with virtually the last kick of the game.

Tex - good to see you doing well in League 1, in first place a third into the season and also moving on in the Checkatrade and EFL Cups. I dug up my last post commenting on CM's and noted I was keeping an eye on Harvey Morris, is that him starting a couple of games in your midfield? How's he doing? His potential looked good but his overall was low? I also see Archie Thomas starting some games at GK.

Simp - I was shocked to see Brooks was being sold since I know he's a favorite of yours but obviously looking at the circumstances you weren't really given a choice. I think your decision to not immediately replace him is brilliant because Süle will definitely be worth the wait. However, it seems that your success this season has been largely in part to excellent defense (clean sheets) so hopefully you can continue to do that without Brooks. Bayern is out of the top 6?

I had to cut this short so I'll get to more of you later

Yep that Harvey Morris is the one starting in the midfield a few times. His overall is only 53 which stinks, but I actually really like his stats for what I am looking for in my center of the 3 midfielders, and even better he has 5 star skills. He needs to gain some strength to really meet what I want, but since he is a CDM that should grow. He hasn't been all that great only recording 2 assists I think (2 goals in the preseason but I don't count that). Still, I think that he will grow nicely into a future option at that role after we move on from Berrett. Archie Thomas started the season as my only keeper after McKeown demanded a transfer before the season started which was annoying. I was ready to give him a chance but he struggled in the first few games and I brought in Truemann on loan to cover that spot. Afterwards I played him in cup games and he has turned in some good performances and there is a good chance that he will be my #1 next season after Truemann goes back to his club.

          Season 2

          The Mariners

          November 2017

          Checkatrade Trophy
          Port Vale 1 - 2 Grimsby Town
          PVL - Cicilia 90'
          GRI - Daniel 90', Bolarinwa 99'
          MOTM: Bolarinwa

The fact that it took us so long to score and then that it went to extra time in this one is just unbelievable. We outclassed them in every facet of the game in this one. It wasn't until the 90th minute though that the fruits of our labor paid off and Daniel was able to head home a Bolarinwa cross for what looked like it would be the winner. Then for reasons beyond my comprehension we left Cicilia completely unmarked in the box and a cross swung in right to his head and he sent it past the keeper. In extra time it was all us though and we assaulted their goal with chances. Bolarinwa got the winner though off of a nice ball from Banton and he finished it across the keeper to send us through.

          Bury FC 1 - 0 Grimsby Town
          BUR - Pope 61'
          MOTM: Bourne

We deserved more from this one, but in the end we have to walk away with nothing. We controlled possession and had the better chances, but the only time we were able to put the ball in the net it was ruled offside. Bury only needed once chance though and they took advantage of our defender being out of position and Pope made a run right through the gap and received the ball for the finish. We had some more chances after that, but nothing was going to go in for us on this day.

          Grimsby Town 4 - 1 Fleetwood Town
          GRI - Al Kuwaykibi 45', Taylor 50', 60' (PEN), Banton 66'
          FLT - Cole 87'
          MOTM: Taylor

Now that is how I want this team to respond after a loss. Al Kuwaykibi put us ahead just before the break with a sliding tap in. Taylor then converted twice after the half with a header and then a penalty. Banton finished it off with a great effort and a powerful finish into the top corner. Cole added a consolation goal for the visitors, but they never looked to be in this one at any point.

          S****horpe United 0 - 0 Grimsby Town
          MOTM: Wright

This was a rather dreadful performance as a whole, but S****horpe certainly weren't any better. Chambers blew one clear chance sending his show wide left and Morris had another shot smash off the crossbar. The main bright spot to take from this was that our two young midfielders, Wright and Morris, both looked promising in this one.

          Grimsby Town 0 - 0 Oldham Athletic
          MOTM: Pearson

I'm surprised there was anyone left in the stands by the end of this one. We put in an abysmal performance for our fans, and Oldham put in one just as bad. Each side registered only a single shot on goal and anyone who wanted to see attacking football needed to go looking elsewhere. With one game left in this month we have to turn it around after two performances in a row that can only best be described as lacking.

          EFL Cup Quarter-Final
          Wolverhampton 2 (4) - (5) 2 Grimsby Town
          WOL - Silvio 89', Dicko 103'
          GRI - Bogle 110' (PEN)
          MOTM: Chambers

After a scoreless first half we finally broke through with Chambers getting past his man down the right and sending a low ball in where Morris tapped in his first senior goal in a Grimsby shirt to give us the lead. But in truly frustrating fashion we let Silvio get in on the left side and he finished it off to send it to extra time and deny us our win in regulation. Dicko then struck next to give Wolves the lead and push us to the brink of elimination from a match that we had been better in up to that point. It wasn't over yet and Sinclair broke into their box and laid it off just before he was cut down and the referee pointed to the spot. Bogle finished it and that was enough to send it to penalties. Thomas came up big in the shootout and after he pushed two shots outside of his post we stood victorious and got our chance to move on to the semi-final.

            Season 2

            The Mariners

            December 2017

            F.A. Cup
            AFC Wimbledon 0 - 0 Grimsby Town
            MOTM: Bolarinwa

We got lucky to get away with this one and force a replay. Wimbledon were better than us and we barely threatened at any point. Our best chance came early on when Bolarinwa got through and just as he took his shot he was cut down with a slide tackle forcing his shot to go just wide. The referee pointed to the spot though and how Charles got away with only a yellow despite being the last man is beyond me. Summerfield took the spot kick for us and he sent it wide left leaving everyone watching in disbelief. After that the chances were all for Wimbledon but Trueman was up for the challenge saving one after another. We get a chance to take this back home now and hopefully we can perform better there.

            Checkatrade Trophy
            Carlisle United 0 - 1 Grimsby Town
            GRI - Daniel 45'
            MOTM: Sinclair

We missed a couple of really good chances, but luckily we were able to convert one and that was good enough. Carlisle was held completely in check and they didn't test our keeper even once in this one. Our break came just before the half when Daniel made a nice turn on his defender as he received the ball and got through for the sliding finish as the ball almost got too far out in front of him. After that it was all just coasting to the end although I would have liked to have added another to make it more comfortable.

            Grimsby Town 0 - 2 Gillingham FC
            GIL - Donnelly 26', O'Hara 78'
            MOTM:

Embarrassing, absolutely embarrassing. Their keeper could have brought out a lawn chair for this one with how poor we played. Even though it was our second choice line up, there is still no excuse for how ineffective we were. Donnelly got their scoring started with a nice shot from just inside the box into the corner. O'Hara then added another one to put us out of our misery as he fired in a screamer from outside the box. Let's hope the decision to rest our first choice players is a smart one.

            F.A. Cup Replay
            Grimsby Town 3 - 0 AFC Wimbledon
            GRI - Taylor 32' (PEN), 40', Morris 57'
            MOTM: Sinclair

Now that is how we needed to respond. Taylor lead the way with a brace against his old team. He almost didn't get to play this one after his poor performances the first time around, but he came to me before the game and asked to be given a chance and he delivered on his promise. He converted an early penalty and then bagged his second after taking the ball away from the defender and racing through to finish 1 on 1 past the keeper. Morris then capped it off by blasting a long range shot into the top corner and we raced away to finish with a 3-0 win.

            Walsall 0 - 2 Grimsby Town
            GRI - Bogle 62', Chambers 78'
            MOTM: Sinclair

This was a classic smash and grab on our part. Walsall peppered our goal throughout the match and Trueman made one save after another to keep them off the score sheet. In the second half we got our break with Bogle getting the ball out wide and cutting in to fire a shot inside the keeper's near post that really should have been kept out. After that we caught them on the counter and Chambers was the one through and he finished it just under the keeper with another shot that probably should have been saved as well. In the end the 3 points are ours and that is all that matters.

            Grimsby Town 0 - 1 Oxford United
            OXF - Taylor 49'
            MOTM: Taylor

We were unlucky in this one. We had some of the best chances we had seen in a while, but each time we either saw it saved by the keeper or sent it off target. Oxford had luck fall the other way for them and just after half a cross missed it's target but fell to the back post where Taylor pounced on it and poked it home for the only goal of this match.

            Southend United 0 - 1 Grimsby Town
            GRI - Chambers 10'
            MOTM: Daniel

We scored early in this one and didn't need to do much of anything after that to secure the win. We started fast and after a series of quick passes the ball came to Chambers inside the box and he blasted it first time into the left side of the goal. Neither side did much after that and we were content to see out our win and take the points from this one.

            Grimsby Town 1 - 1 MK Dons
            GRI - Al Kuwaykibi 56'
            MKD - Bowditch 80'
            MOTM: Al Kuwaykibi

For the first time in a while we actually lost the possession battle, but we actually ended up with one of the highest number of shots on target that we've had in months. It took until the second half but Al Kuwaykibi scored off of a scuffed ball from the keeper as he tried to bring in a header and he took advantage and tapped in the bouncing ball. We kept attacking after that and that is what ended up costing us as we got caught out on the counter. A long ball played over the top was redirected into the box with a cross and Bowditch was there to head it past our keeper to find the late equalizer that cost us the win.

            Bradford City 1 - 0 Grimsby Town
            BRA - Vincelot 48'
            MOTM: Clarke

Daniel started this one off with two big chances in the first 12 minutes, but one was saved and the other went just wide. After that we seemed to have trouble putting any of our shots on target. Early in the second half Vincelot got free in the box and volleyed a cross towards goal and Trueman could only just barely get a hand on it but the shot still continued into the net. We tried all we could to pull it back, but we couldn't get anything too dangerous going.

            Grimsby Town 3 - 1 Barnsley
            GRI - Al Kuwaykibi 33', Morris 79', Chambers 83'
            BAR - Winnall 45'
            MOTM: Berrett

In the first half Berrett played Al Kuwaykibi through down the right and he was able to finish low back across the keeper into the bottom corner to give us the first lead of the game. Unfortunately the lead was not to last long and a muffed clearance by Berrett in our own box allowed Winnall to pounce and take advantage with a quick goal to tie it up. It was a struggle to get past them the rest of the day and in the 79th minute we won a free kick from just outside the box. Morris stepped over it and the youngster sent it over the wall and into the top corner for the lead. With Barnsley pushing the other way it wasn't long before we caught them on the counter with numbers and Banton raced past the back line before laying it off for Chambers on the back post for the wide open tap in.

Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

Hey guys, hope everyone is good here. Happy new year to you all and your families.

Life has eased up and I'm about to get the Reading career kicked off at last, but first I decided to go into the edit player feature and give everyone in the squad at least 70 stamina. I think it's quite unrealistic that professional athletes wouldn't be able to last the duration of the match. I also did a couple of position changes based on where I plan to play certain lads, and adjusted the stats of certain players that I felt were grossly below par based on my real-life knowledge of them (Jordan Obita's pace, for example). And last but not least, I decided to increase certain stats for two players who I want to build around.

But one thing got me thinking. Is it terribly unfair to redistribute a player's existing stats? No adding to what's there, and you can only redistribute within a given category. So let's say a player has a total of 178 points in Defending. You can redistribute those 178 points however you want, so long as they only go into Stand Tackle, Slide Tackle and Marking.

For one thing, you can train most stats up. This just speeds the results up, and in the process weakens you in other departments. Furthermore, many of EA's ratings for lower-league players is very arbitrary. I've seen plenty of highly talented players in the Championship with shocking ratings for individual attributes. For example, despite having been the division's best player for over a season, Anthony Knockaert only has 71 finishing and 69 vision. And sometimes, easing up on aggression or increasing marking can be the only way to get players to behave how you want them to, which is essentially the manager's job.

The way I see it, the edit player feature goes some way in negating a lot of the nonsense about FIFA. As long as you don't go overboard with it and give yourself a squad full of 88-rated superstars, I don't see anything wrong with changing positions, redistributing stats, correcting obvious errors in ratings, and the occasional bonus of giving yourself a future star. To a certain extent, I can even understand adding a few points here and there. Maybe all this with a limit of not exceeding an overall rating of 73 or 74 for any player in the English second division.

I really would like to know your thoughts on this. I know there are going to be vastly differing opinions, so I'm looking forward to the debate!

I'm fine with this, I don't give myself the time to do it but you sound like you're going about it objectively which is the main thing. Video games are far from perfect when rating players.

                      GRI - Morris 13', Daniel 86'
                      MOTM: Daniel

Morris has really come into his own lately after struggling to make any significant impact for most of the first half of this year. He opened up the scoring today after Disley laid it off for him at the top of the box and he fired a long shot past the keeper. After that we played with a focus on controlling the ball the rest of the way and we limited Mansfield's attack to mainly just corner attempts. On one of those corners late we caught them with their numbers forward and Chambers raced down the field before sliding it across to Daniel for the finish to secure the win.

                      GRI - Al Kuwaykibi 88'
                      MOTM: Banton

Honestly, Bristol deserved this one. They kept constant pressure on our goal but Thomas was up the the challenge after his defenders kept letting the other team through at him. We did our best to try to counter back the other way and we had a few chances but most of them ended up sailing wide or high. In the end it was Al Kuwaykibi's pace that won it for us. Banton played a long through ball down the right and Al Kuwaykibi raced past the defense and shot low and under the keeper to send us through.

                      EFL Cup Semi-Final Leg 1
                      Newcastle United 2 - 0 Grimsby Town
                      NEW - Diame 33', Mitrovic 90'
                      MOTM: Haidara

We were way over matched in this one and yet we still blew chances that could have possibly won it for us or at least given us a draw. Diame struck first from the left side and he put it inside our near post with an effort that Thomas really should never have allowed to get past him. After that we tried to respond but our attempts were comical when it came to our final effort. Mitrovic then added a second from distance that really could put the nail in the coffin for us when it comes to the reverse fixture. One goal was manageable, but two will be maybe too much for us to overcome.

                      Grimsby Town 1 - 0 S****horphe United
                      GRI - Banton 52'
                      MOTM: Banton

This was a big one. A top of the table clash that could mean a lot at the end of the season. While we could always use more goals, this was about as dominating of a performances as I could have asked for from the lads. Taylor asked for the start and it was him racing past the defense on the right that created our goal with a low ball across for Banton to tap in easily. We have several chances after that, but the real focus shutting down our own end and we were able to do that successfully.

                      Fleetwood Town 2 - 1 Grimsby Town
                      FLT - Cole 41', Nirennold 76'
                      GRI - Al Kuwaykibi 58'
                      MOTM: Cole

This was an annoying result since both of their goals were a long range wondergoal and then the other was off a corner. Cole started it off with a right footed effort from yards outside the box and it settled into the bottom corner just before the half. Al Kuwaykibi did his best to keep us in it though as he dribbled through the defense and finished low across the goal into the bottom corner for the equalizer. It looked like we might break through and get another to take the win, but it was Fleetwood who scored off a corner when Nirennold rose above our defenders and fired it into the top corner. All of our efforts after that were fruitless and we had to settle for the loss.

                      EFL Cup Semi-Final Leg 2
                      Grimsby Town (0) 0 - 0 (2) Newcastle United
                      MOTM: Summerfield

This was a tough decision on what to field in this one with the F.A. Cup just a few days afterwards. In the end I made the decision to run out the second choice lineup since the 2 goal deficit was always going to be hard to overcome and I needed our best players to try to continue our run in the F.A. cup. The defense ended up holding strong in the back and kept Newcastle at bay throughout the entire match, but the attack was lacking and we squandered the few chances that we did come by. Newcastle was the better team throughout this tie though and they deserve to go on to the final.

                      F.A. Cup
                      Derby County 1 - 1 Grimsby Town
                      DER - Ince 22'
                      GRI - Berrett 55'
                      MOTM: Al Kuwaykibi

Ince hurt us early in this one with a great touch inside the box to get around his defender and then firing back across the goal into the bottom corner to give Derby the early lead. We weren't ready to give up yet though and Al Kuwaykibi raced down the right side to send a low cross in and Berrett was able to beat his defender to the ball on the back post and redirect it into the goal. Derby fired a series of shots at our goal after that and Thomas made one diving save after another to keep us alive and force the replay back on our home field.

It was really disappointing not to get a goal in this one to take with us back to the return leg. We had a number of good chances, none better than in the 90th minute when Chambers rose up to head a cross past the keeper but off the crossbar. There was a scramble for the ball afterwards but we were only able to send it right back at the keeper. All we have to do now is to win at home and we move on to the final.

In the end I decided not to mess around with the stats too much. It just felt a little bit too much like manipulation and cheating considering I'm only in the second division. I did, however, follow a couple of points.

                          1. Everyone below 70 Stamina is getting that bumped up for free, plus several players I may have my eye on. Same goes for position changes.

                          2. Movement stats have minimal, if any, impact on OVR. I'm redistributing these for my players.

                          3. Liam Kelly and Callum Harriott are becoming future stars. I'm going to redistribute their stats freely across categories, along with a 10% boost in total stats. Outside of movement, only five stats can exceed 78.

                          4. Transfer policy focuses on players from countries where English is widely spoken and understood by the majority of the population, with countries in bold of particular attention.

                            Season 2

                            The Mariners

                            February 2018

                            Oxford United 2 - 1 Grimsby Town
                            OXF - Johnson 45', Lundstram 65'
                            GRI - Bogle 52'
                            MOTM: Lundstram

For some reason we just cant beat Oxford. This time it took a wondergoal to beat us and for the second time we were left with no points. Just before half Johnson took a shot on the half volley but Trueman kept it out only to see it bounce right back to Johnson and he finished the second time around. On the other side of the half it didn't take long for Bolarinwa to play Bogle through and he placed it across the goal for the equalizer. The celebrations weren't to last long though and Lundstram conjured up a bit of magic to blast a shot from distance past our keeper to decide the match.

                            F.A. Cup Replay
                            Grimsby Town 2 - 0 Derby County
                            GRI - Taylor 19' (PEN), Banton 63'
                            MOTM: Banton

I knew this was going to end up good when early on Anya cut down Sinclair as he was about to send a cross in and the referee pointed to the spot. Taylor slotted it home and we were up in front of our own fans with a chance to move on in the cup. We continued to smother out any attempts they had after that and they failed to even register a single shot on goal. In the second half Banton all but secured it after Al Kuwaykibi played him through down the left and he finished it off to double the lead.

                            Checkatrade Trophy Semi-Final Leg 2
                            Grimsby Town 2 (2) - (1) 1 Coventry City
                            GRI - Bogle 41', Chambers 90'
                            COV - Rose 74'
                            MOTM: Chambers

We went on a full out assault in the first half and if not for the heroics of Charles-Cooks we might have scored 3 or 4 before the break. The one we did get though came from Bolarinwa playing Bogle through in front of goal and he directed it around the keeper to put us ahead in the tie. Then in truly frustrating fashion Summerfield lost the ball and Coventry pushed ahead to get the ball through to Rose who calmly finished it to give them the much coveted away goal meaning we had to get another or else see ourselves eliminated. That goal didn't come until the final minute when Chambers took the ball out left around the defense and launched an unbelievable left footed shot across the goal and into the top corner to secure our place in the final.

                            Huddersfield United 1 - 2 Grimsby Town
                            HUD - Palmer 33'
GRI - Taylor 62' (PEN), Al Kuwaykibi 89'
                            MOTM: Banton

We went behind in the first half in this one after Palmer hit a fantastic volley into the top corner to give the home side the lead. We responded well and kept up our pressure but it wasn't until the second half that we got on the score sheet ourselves. It was Taylor converting from the spot that earned us the equalizer and we were able to breathe a little easier after that. No real chances arose after that for either team until the 89th minute when Browne got through before laying it off across the goal for Al Kuwaykibi to fire home and earn all 3 points.

                            Grimsby Town 3 - 0 Coventry City
                            GRI - Morris 40', Bolarinwa 79', Summerfield 90'
                            MOTM: Summerfield

The scoreline definitely does not tell the story of this one. We took just 4 shots the entire match, scoring on 3 compared to Coventry's 15 shots with 11 of those being on target. Morris started us off with a shot from outside the box that nestled into the top corner and that allowed us to focus more on the defensive end having the lead going into half. Bolarinwa got the ball down the left side from King and he was able to catch the keeper sleeping and drive it low across his goal into the bottom corner. Coventry really had to turn up the pressure after that and it cost them in the 90th minute when they sent their keeper forward for a corner and we were able to clear it away. Summerfield got to the ball first and just fired from a mile out while the goal was still open to cap off the win for us.

                            Grimsby Town 1 - 0 Norwich City
                            GRI - Taylor 31'
                            MOTM: Al Kuwaykibi

There was no taking this one away from us, and Norwich was lucky to keep the scoreline as respectable as it was. From the start we took the front foot with constant pressure on their back line and a number of shots at their goal. Al Kuwaykibi took advantage of a poor touch and took the ball away from a defender before sending it in to Taylor in front of goal for the quick tap in past the keeper. After that we had more chances that we kept scuffing and it really should have been at least a second goal for us. Defensively we held strong and with the clean sheet we move on to the quarter finals.

                            Grimsby Town 2 - 0 Bury FC
                            GRI - Otayn 4', Berrett 84'
                            MOTM: Berrett

Banton took advantage of the defense early in this one and drew a foul just outside the left side of the box to earn a free kick. Berrett sent a cross in from the spot kick and Otayn rose to meet it and head it down into the bottom corner for the early lead. Bury failed to respond in any way and they didn't provide an attacking threat at any point in the match. We then locked it up when Banton found Berrett on the left and he hit a low shot across the goal into the bottom right to double the lead.

                            Grimsby Town 0 - 2 Port Vale
                            PVL - Pereira 45', Cicilia 68'
                            MOTM: Pereira

We took a ton of shots, but very few of them actually made the keeper have to work. Periera made us pay though just before the half when he got the ball with his back to the defender and turned him out of his shoes to fire a low shot into the corner. Cicilia then added a second when he got the ball and fired from distance to see it settle into the back of the net. Our ability to put the ball on target didn't get any better of that and we failed to mount any effort at a comeback after that.
