Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

We Try. We Fail. We Win.

      2020 Summer Transfer Window

      Transfers Out

Peter Pekarik, RB, 33y, 71 ovr,
      €1.3M to FC St. Pauli

My heart broke when I sold Pekarik, but it was something that had to be done if we wanted to continue improving the team. The Slovakian defender had been at the club since 2012, and even though he had already decreased by 6 overall points, he wasn't showing any signs of wanting to retire at the end of the season.

Admir Mehmedi, LM, 29y, 78 ovr, €9M to 1. FC Köln

Mehmedi wasn't really the most useful attacking player in the squad last season, and to add to that it took a single month of the new season for our Swiss winger to start decreasing in overall. We decided to sell Mehmedi and replace him with a better player who will hopefully help us retain the title.

Felix Passlack, RB, 22y, 80 ovr, €27.7M to Borussia Mönchengladbach

This was an interesting transfer as, in the beginning, I wasn't planning to sell Passlack. However, he continued to complain about wanting a wage increase, but every time I offered him such, his agent let me know that Passlack is not willing to negotiate with the club. Furthermore, the young German didn't have that great of a season last season, so I decided to cash in on him. €28M is more than enough to find a capable replacement for Passlack.

Oliver Baumann, GK, 30y, 81 ovr, €28M to Valencia CF

My plans were to replace the aging Rune Jarstein in goal with Oliver Baumann, but after some underwhelming performances in the last couple of seasons, Jarstein was still the unchallenged starter of the team while Baumann was playing only around 15 games a season. Valencia then came in with a big offer for our second-choice keeper, I counteroffered with 28M, and Baumann now plays in Spain. This might've been a mistake as Jarstein has begun to go down in stats, but if that is the case, I think we will manage for half a season until January.

      Transfers In

      Pascal Stenzel

73 Ovr, Right Back, 24 Years Old, Germany

      €3,000,000

You might be surprised that I signed a 73-overall defender, but don't worry, Stenzel is not going to be a starter. I decided to purchase the 24-year-old German to be our second-choice right back. Stenzel is still young, and I believe that he has the capabilities to play for the German champions: Hertha BSC. Dortmund's academy graduate will mainly be used as a rotational player.

      Lukas Klostermann

81 Ovr, Right Back, 24 Years Old, Germany

      €20,000,000

After Mönchengladbach bought Passlack for €27.7M, we needed to find a replacement for him. After a bit of looking around our eyes landed on Lukas Klostermann, a right back for the relegation-battling RB Leipzig, and we signed the 24-year-old German for €20M. The pacy and tall Klostermann will hopefully be a reliable and solid defender who willl also contribute in attack.

      Breel Embolo

85 Ovr, Right Midfielder, 23 Years Old, Switzerland

      €40,000,000

Our most expensive signing of the summer, and the most expensive signing of Hertha BSC history, is the young attacker Breel Embolo. The talented Cameroonian-born Swiss international joined us from Schalke 04, a team which finished in the bottom half of the league, for €40M, and both the Hertha fans and I are expecting Embolo to do wonders for us. The 23-year-old is fast, strong, skillful, and he certainly knows how to shoot the ball.

      1. FC Köln 0 - 1 Hertha BS
      C
      Duda 77'

We started off the season in the same fashion as we finished last season: with a hard-fought 1-0 win. Köln put up a good fight against the pride of Berlin and champions of Germany, but it wasn't enough as finally in the 77th minute Ondrej Duda reached a parried shot first and shot it into the back of the net. Not the season start we were hoping for, but a win is always a win.

      My Thoughts

      League Play -
We only played one game, and I'm slightly worried about how poorly we played in attack. Hopefully we are only suffering from a championship hangover and will start playing on another level fast. Then again, the season is long, so I shouldn't be too worried about our poor opening game.

Champions League Group - I wouldn't call the teams in our group the best in the world, and I'm very confident in our ability to finish first in the group. Arsenal might cause us some problems, but either way I'm expecting us to beat them. We have the quality to do that.

Transfers - Pekarik was old and decreasing, Passlack hadn't been playing too well and we got a lot money for him, Mehmedi was also underwhelming, and Valencia gave us a huge amount of money for Baumann.

Stenzel was cheap and a solid option for a depth player, while we didn't have to splash the cash to get Klostermann who was probably my top target after a bit of scouting around. His pace is a big plus, too.

At first, I was planning to use Mehmedi in a player+cash deal to get Emil Forsberg, Serge Gnabry, or Vincenzo Grifo. However, all of them lacked that world class touch, and I decided to go for the 85-overall Embolo with some very high stats. Let's hope that he makes an impact.

Thanks! The fixture congestion is real haha. The Europa League final and the FA Cup final only had 2 days in between them so I had to play reserve side in the FA Cup final. The congestion also no doubt cost me points in the league as I had to play several games with reserves. But last year I ended up not winning any trophies, so I will take this season as a good success even though it could have been much better.

Shame about the Passlack situation Simp but Klostermann should be more than capable, probably even better. Big money buy in Embolo but he should do the business!

            Super Cup
            Barcelona 0 - 4 Grimsby Town
            GRI - Kessie 3', Zaha 33', Wolf 42', 90'
            MOTM: Wolf

What a statement of intent to start this new season. We took on the best of the best, and we were by far the better team. We scored just minutes into the game with Dembele playing Kessie the ball down the middle and he hit it first time past the keeper. Zaha doubled our lead to open his scoring account with the club after he dribbled around the left side of the defense and then placed it back across to the far post. Wolf got in on the action before the break after Dembele played him down the left and his shot was deflected by the defender but it went in on the near post as the keeper was reacting to the original trajectory. Wolf bagged a brace after Cole played him the ball on the left and he was able to finish across the goal to cap off our outstanding night.

            Grimsby Town 2 - 0 Manchester United
            GRI - Zaha 39', Dembele 54'
            MOTM: Wolf

It was a good start to the new season as we took down what should be one of our biggest competitors in the league. Zaha scored his first league goal for the club in the first half after Wolf played the ball across the box from the left and he tapped it in on the back post. Wolf provided another one as he set up Dembele running up the middle and he was able to slot it around the keeper to double the lead.

            Grimsby Town 1 - 0 Chelsea FC
            GRI - Promes 3' (OG)
            MOTM: Kessie

Somehow the only shot we took that wasn't on target was the one that went in. We got a bit of luck on our side as Sidibe attacked down the left and went to send a cross in but it was deflected by the defender in front of him and it took the keeper by surprise when it rocketed into their own net. As much of a fluke as that goal was, we deserved the win considering how badly we outplayed Chelsea.

            EFL Cup
            Swansea City 0 - 3 Grimsby Town
            GRI - Banton 72', Harris 77', Phillips 90'
            MOTM: Osadebe

Our successful start to the season continues, even with a rotated squad for this cup match. Banton was the one to finally open the scoring after Kelly used a great hesitation go get space on the right to send a ball across the goal and it was Banton that was there to tap it in. Harris doubled our lead just minutes later after Osadebe threaded a ball perfectly up the middle for him and he was able to hold off his defender and finish inside the left post. In the final minute Swansea tried desperately to pull one back and they sent their keeper up on a corner, but we were able to clear it and Phillips was the first to run it down and he had an easy finish into the open goal ahead of him.

            Liverpool FC 0 - 2 Grimsby Town
            GRI - Boscagli 48', 74'
            MOTM: Morrison

An outstanding debut for our young Frenchman, Boscagli. He opened the scoring at the beginning of the second half when Morrison got free down the left and sent the ball through the box where Boscagli was on hand to tap it in. He then doubled our lead with Morrison once again setting him up, this time with a through ball around the left and he finished back across the goal to the far post. We held on after that and wrapped up the month without conceding a single goal despite playing the likes of Barcelona, United, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

              Rochdale AFC 0 - 1 Blackpool FC
              BLP - Magennis 58'
              MOTM: Evina

A win is a nice way to start the season, and we did it with a very controlling performance. The first half didnt see any changes to the score, but we were able to finally break through in the second half. Evina led us on a counter pushing the ball forward and he was able to Pick out Magennis running through a gap in the defense on the back side and it was a simple finish after that as he only had the keeper to beat.

              EFL Cup
              Oldham Athletic 2 - 1 Blackpool FC
              OLD - Osei 67', 74'
              BLP - Akinde 79'
              MOTM: Osei

Such a frustrating match, that we really should have at least found an equalizer in. We fell behind in the second half As Osei ran past our defender in the box to get on the end of a cross and knock it into the back of the net. Then just a few minutes later we let him get the ball on the left with too much space and he fired it inside the near post to complete his brace. We managed to pull one back though when Philliskirk played Akinde through on the right and he was able to finish back across to the far post. We put pressure on them the rest of the way, but we couldn't find the equalizer that we so much deserved.

              Plymouth Argyle 2 - 2 Blackpool FC
              PLY - Brunt 73', 80'
              BLP - Rose 50', Pawlett 84'
              MOTM: Rose

We had no business taking a point from this game as we scored two goals on our only two shots of the entire match. We got the lead in the second half when Sordell dribbled across the box and found Rose on the right side and he took his time to place his shot around the keeper to the left side of the goal. But Plymouth came back and found an equalizer through Brunt who got free on the back post and powered his header past the keeper. Brunt then added a second to take the lead with another well placed header off of a cross. But we came back at them and Rose was able to play Pawlett through on the right and he beat the keeper to the far post for the equalizer that saved a point for us.

              Blackpool FC 4 - 1 Chesterfield FC
              BLP - Sordell 38', 50', 90', Pawlett 89'
              CHF - Jones 80'
              MOTM: Sordell

Sordell finally opened up his Blackpool scoring account, and he did it in style. He gave us the lead early in the first half after Magennis got down the right and sent a ball across the face of the goal where Sordell was waiting to tap it in. He added a second just after the break with Magennis once again playing the provider and he was through on the left for the easy finish past the keeper. Chesterfield did pull one back though to stay in the game as the ball took several deflections off of a set piece and ended up with Jones on the edge of the box and he fired it into the top right corner. But we turned it back around after that and Magennis provided his third assist of the night finding Pawlett down the right and he slotted it past the keeper to the far post. Then in the final minute Deegan found Sordell down the right and he used his pace to get past the defense and slotted it past the keeper to complete his hat trick.

                    Stramaccioni Hired at Ternana

Ternana Calcio are hoping former Internazionale and Udinese manager Andrea Stramaccioni is the right man for the job to lead the Umbria side back to Serie A for only the third time in the Rossoverdi's history. The 40-year-old Stramaccioni returns to Italy after last heading up Panathinaikos in Greece and looks to build on Ternana's 12th-place Serie B finish in 2015-16. Ternana last played in the top-flight during the 1974-75 season, so getting them to make the jump up will be no small task for a manager looking to resurrect his career.

                      SOU - Gallagher 50'
                      MOTM: Kessie

We finally conceded our first goal of the season, but it did nothing from stopping our momentum and grabbing the win. Zaha opened the scoring after Kessie played him down the right and he only had the keeper to beat. Wolf doubled our lead after Kamada played him the ball and he ran past the defense and fired his shot which took a slight deflection causing the keeper to come up with air on his save attempt. We added another off of a corner as Dembele flicked it on at the near post for Kessie to head in on the other post. Then the moment we knew would happen eventually came, and Gallagher got the ball at the edge of our box and avoided a challenge to let his shot fly into the top corner. Zaha then grabbed his second on the night when Morrison got some space on the left and sent a ball across the goal for Zaha to knock in on the far post.

                      ATH - Villalibre 12', Williams 19', 45'
                      MOTM: Dembele

What a roller coaster of a match from start to finish. We took the lead early on when Kessie played Dembele up the middle and he finished it past the keeper. Our lead didn't last long as poor defending allowed Villalibre to get through on goal and he slotted it into the back of the net. Then Williams gave them the lead after he tracked down a loose ball in the box and turned towards goal to power it past the keeper. He added a second just before the half when he trapped a ball on the far post and the fired it in before anyone could recover. Things were looking pretty bad for us, but not long after the half started Dembele was able to make a great turn around the defense and finished it on the far post. Zaha then got the equalizer after Kamada played him the ball on the right and he avoided a defender before finishing past the keeper. Dembele then completed his hat trick and gave us the lead with an absolutely stunning goal when Morrison played him the ball outside of the box and he smashed it from distance into the top right corner.

                      Middlesbrough 0 - 4 Grimsby Town
                      GRI - Morris 16', Sacko 35', Cole 41', Wolf 74'
                      MOTM: Cole

Our reserves outclassed Middlesbrough for all 90 minutes and it was one of the most comfortable wins of the season for us. Morris opened the scoring with a fantastic free kick from about 25 yards out and he curled it over the wall and into the top left corner. Sack doubled our lead when Cole played him into space down the right and he finished it around the keeper. Cole then added one of his own after Wolf's shot was saved and he followed it up by tapping in the rebound. The roles then reversed as Cole had his shot saved and Wolf was there to clean it up for our fourth and final goal of the night.

                      EFL Cup
                      Grimsby Town 4 - 0 West Brom
                      GRI - Dembele 6' (PEN), Howkins 65' (OG), Harris 69', Kelly 84'
                      MOTM: Morrison

This wasn't even close and West Brom stood no chance against our first choice side. Dembele opened the scoring after the referee awarded us a penalty when one of our players was pulled down during a corner, and he powered his shot into the top left corner from the spot. We didn't get the next one until the second half, but a great bit of play led to Dembele getting the ball on the right side but his shot attempt was a little wide, but luck was on our side as the defender deflected it back into his own goal. Just a few minutes later, Morrison was able to find Harris with a perfectly timed run to avoid being offside and he had an easy finish around the keeper. With the result already wrapped up, we put the finishing touches on the night when Kelly picked up a loose ball inside the box and he slotted it to the far post.

                      Grimsby Town 3 - 1 West Brom
                      GRI - Cole 4', 56', Kelly 88'
                      WBA - Wright 34'
                      MOTM: Cole

It's always odd playing the same opponent in back to back games, but it's made all that much better when you beat them in both. Cole scored just 4 minutes in after Wolf tried to send a ball across and the keeper pushed it out to the middle where Cole slid in to knock it back into the goal. West Brom found an equalizer though when Wright got into the box and jumped up to volley a cross out of the air into the left side of the goal. We regained the lead with a bit of luck as the ball was tackled away from us but then deflected into the path of Cole and he was through on goal for the finish. We put the final touches on the game with Bennett getting down the right side and sending the ball in low and Kelly was there to meet it on the near post and direct it past ht keeper.

                      JUV - Zyro 60'
                      MOTM: Zaha

We move to the top of the table now in our group after taking down what is probably the toughest team in our group. We opened the scoring when Boscagli got around the right side and sent a ball across that the keeper deflected up into the air and Dembele missed a diving header, but Zaha was the next one in to finish it off. Boscagli attacked their defense once again just a few minutes later and he was able to play a great ball through to Dembele who finished it off quickly to the near post. We extended the lead even more in the second half with Morrison playing a ball across from the left to Zaha waiting right in front of the goal for the simple tap in. Zyro pulled one back for Juventus with an absolutely world class goal as he fired a shot with his left foot from outside of the box and smashed it off the crossbar and in.

                        Doncaster Rovers 1 - 1 Blackpool FC
                        DON - Marquis 90'
                        BLP - Sordell 26'
                        MOTM: Marquis

We really should have won this match. An stunning long distance screamer in the final minute was the difference between 3 points and just the 1. We scored in the first half to take the lead with Pawlett playing Sordell into space on the left out on the break and he was able to use his pace to get into the box and slot it around the keeper to the far post. It looked like we were going to hold on for the win, but in the 90th minute Marquis got the ball outside of his own box and he turned around our defender and then fired his shot from distance into the top left corner.

                        Blackpool FC 1 - 1 Bolton Wanderers
                        BLP - Bennett 40'
                        BOL - Clough 12'
                        MOTM: Bennett

Another draw, but we are still unbeaten in league play so far this season. We fell behind early when Clough took on our defense and cut it back sending his man past him and he was through on goal for the easy finish. We were able to equalize with Bennett playing a great 1-2 with Sordell and he got the ball back on the left side of the goal and placed it inside the near post. We frustratingly had a golden chance to get the win, but Akinde sent his shot wide when he was through on goal with only the keeper to beat.

                        Port Vale 0 - 0 Blackpool FC
                        MOTM: Bennett

Another frustrating draw, and even though the unbeaten streak stays alive, we will only see ourselves dropping down if we don't start finding ways to win. The worst news from this one was Evina going down to injury and we can only hope that there won't be any long term absence for him.

                        Blackpool FC 0 - 2 Northampton Town
                        NHT - Iaciofano 68', 75'
                        MOMT: Iaciofano

And so it ends. The unbeaten run is over and now all we are is a team that is plummeting down the standings. The opening goal came when Iaciofano jumped a pass from our keeper and he took advantage of the him being off his line and curled a shot to the far post. Iaciofano added a second when he rose up to flick a cross on to the far post after he got free from his defender. We offered nothing in terms of attack from our end and the result was never in question.

                        Sheffield United 0 - 0 Blackpool FC
                        MOTM: Bennett

Three straight games without a goal now, and our form is only getting worse. We were awarded a penalty in the opening minutes, but Akinde saw his attempt saved as the keeper stretched out to push it away. That was our best chance of the night and we really have to figure out how to fix this now.

                        Blackpool FC 4 - 0 S****horpe United
                        BLP - Sordell 9', Akinde 30', 71', Pawlett 79'
                        MOTM: Pawlett

This was a huge win for us to close the month and break up our poor run of form. It's a shame we couldn't find these goals earlier in the month, but we have just accept that we have to if we want to get promoted we need to be better. We got on the score sheet early when Payne played Sordell through on the left and he was able to place it across the goal to the far post. We doubled the lead with Pawlett playing Akinde through on the right and he finished it just around the keeper with a shot that probably should have been saved. Akinde bagged another after Sordell played him the ball out to the right and he powered his shot past the keeper into the top left corner. Pawlett made it 4 for us after we got out on the counter and Akinde's cross was pushed away into the middle and he was there to knock it into the back of the net.

Texasbum – (Grimsby) What a start to the season! 1st place in the group and league with a game in hand, can’t get much better than that. (Blackpool) Much different story than the other CM haha.
How has the start of your Blackpool CM compared to when you started with Grimsby?

It's been quite a bit harder haha. But I am using much more difficult sliders now than when I started Grimsby, and also I am using a set of house rules that makes me have to approach building my squad a lot differently since I am selling my players more often and have to always be scouting for replacements just in case. It's a pretty fun challenge, and it is giving me the difficulty that I was hoping for. It's fun to have both where I have my Grimsby team at the top ready to compete with the best after years of building, and the Blackpool where I am trying to avoid having my best players poached in every window.

Brilliant match v Man City in the closing weeks of my Arsenal Career Mode, Season 1. Video is a bit longer than my norm (10 min), but it was so good, I couldn't cut any more! Please give it a watch if you have the chance!

FYI: Legendary, 15 min, settings as posted in OP.

JHedges: Awesome match! It's only fair both keepers gave up the first goals by bad passes. Sucks they nobody was able to get on the end of your low cross in extra time for a chance to win!
