I'm beginning to think that the reason I suck at this game is my lack of diligent note taking.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
jesus, man my notes look amateurish now.
I did have a notebook for Tactics, where I would create formations, one for depth charts(with the key U18 kids to remember), and one for the next transfer deadline.
Theology 101 class was funComment

To be honest, all that Excel file is is a combination of the general info and the contract screens. Having it with colour just makes it a bit easier for me to keep track, simple things please simple minds!
This is the first time I've done it so specific in terms of finance though.Comment

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
So I was given a 1 mil transfer budget for my first season at At. Madrid, so I could make any big moves. Falcao wanted to leave, but I promised him CL football to convince him to stay.
With 6 matches left in the season I was comfortably in 3rd place, but then I lost 5 matches in a row. OUCH. This left me tied on points for 4th place with Sevilla and 4 points behind 3rd. And who did I play in my final match? Sevilla. Luckily their GK decided to have a 3.2 match rating (the lowest I've ever seen) and I stomped them 7-0 to finish in 4th.
The board then promptly rewarded me with a 500k transfer budget for next season. So much for that CL money being put to good use.Comment

This also led me to find out that Theo Walcott, in game, is far more effective coming off the bench in relief, which is also why I employ Cazorla/Gotze/Ox, as they can shift around to give Theo the right wing, or I replace Ibra with Theo(thought normally I try and put Giroud in if I need a striker) Also found that my defensive pairings work best as Verme/Hummels and Mertesacker/Alderweireld with Mertesacker/Hummels being the next most effective pairing. The overall rating increase of .4, and an average of .65 less goals scored makes this an effective pairing system(I played Verme/Mertesacker against Hearts and lost 0-1 with Verme/Merte getting 6.1, 6.0 respectively, in the rematch I played Verme/Hummels, still gave up a goal, but 8.9/8.9 respectively instead)
You get out of the game what you put in, is the best advice I can give.Last edited by Suntan Superman; 06-11-2013, 04:33 AM.Support Local Sports

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
I normally wing it, but I normally end up losing control a bit. Plus with this I get to look at all the pretty colours. Moving on...
Finished in a very boring mid-table position of 13th in my first season in the job. In a nutshell, this season has shown me that we are remarkably consistent at being inconsistent. In some games we were magnificent, yet in others, abysmal. This is one of the main reasons I've struggled. It's not just home games I'm good in/away games I'm bad in, it's all over the shop.
In terms of the squad, Adam Le Fondre is going back to Reading after a loan spell where he hit 24 goals in 34 games. I may try to get him back but he may cost too much. We also desperately need better wingers. We never had a settled left winger and on the right, El-Hadji Diouf lacks any sort of speed.
I was also pleasantly surprised that my job never came under any sort of pressure. Even when we were struggling at the start of the season the board seemed to fully back me so I'm pretty happy about that.
My only aim for next season is at least make the playoffs. It's definitely possible, we just need to start a lot better than last year.Comment

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
Partly is possible, considering my job is analytics, and I've basically been doing deep analysis for years, it was only a matter of time that I started using it in Football Manager. My spreadsheets(which we won't discuss much further) are incredibly detailed, and have a 0/1 for effectiveness ratings against formations, and play types, for instance, if it appears as though your opponent is simply playing two central defenders with a defend focus, playing a poacher up front has much more effectiveness than playing a DLF, AP or anything else in the striker position. Whereas if any of the centre halfs have a "cover" focus, the effectiveness of a "Poacher" goes down by about half. These are the types of things that often help me win with less at lower clubs, if I can get specialty players who don't require much for wages, I can plug them in and go.(In England, Eric Addo is my favorite guy to get as he slides right into my defensive midfielder role with an Anchor focus, and he plays phenomenally.)
You should make a thread specifically for teaching FM analysis lol
