Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***

So after a number of failures, I decided to take on the SAF Challenge, and it was an interesting ride. First, I absolutely cheated the system, and instead of taking Stoke like I was meant to I took over Brentford in 20th instead. Also, I had simmed this year, and post World Cup made all of the high level managerial changes, even with different results, so Manuel Pellegrini still took charge at the recently relegated West Ham.

Things started out poorly, a row with a player wanting a new contract took hold of the team within days of me joining. I sold him off for 1/2 his value and the supporters were mad. I wanted to overhaul the defense and midfield of the squad and asked for more transfer funds on January 1st, and Brentford has some generous owners and gave me an additional 40m to work with. I secured players above the standard with Relegation Release Clauses of $0. Predrag Rajkovic joined for 6m, Tyler Adams joined for 5m, Ruben Loftus-Cheek joined for 6.5m, Rob Holding joined for 9m, I player swapped another unhappy player(Ollie Watkins) and 4m for Mathias Jorgensen, and paid 15m for Kenneth Zohore to shore up the top. I sold off players I didn't want or were no longer going to feature, and because I planned on staying, I was brought in Timothy Weah on loan from PSG, with a view to purchasing him later on. I was especially keen to develop Tyler Adams and Timothy Weah mostly for UNCftbl's sake here to see how good I could make them.

By the end of January we had moved to 19th, ahead of the now winless-in-11-games Bristol City, I was told by the board to turn it around and 6 points in the next 5 matches. 3 of those points came against the title challenging Tottenham, with another 3 secured by besting fellow relegation candidate Bristol City. Suddenly I was on a run. A few good FA Cup Draws (Didn't play a PL team til the Semi-Final drubbing by Man Utd) and a few more wins in the league saw us escape the relegation zone and get as high as 14th.

Then it happened, the squad had finally turned on me, I was flat ignored during team talks, I was denied a team meeting, our form faltered a bit, but we stayed above water, even moving into 12th after a win at home against Southampton. It was clear that the players, other than the ones I brought in, didn't and weren't going to like me anytime soon. After a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of now-relegated Stoke, I announced I would be resigning at the end of the season, a strange and tumultuous 7-month stint in the Premier League with Brentford came to close with a 4-0 victory at Griffin Park against Swansea. A victory so sweet, it saw us jump Preston to 11th place in the Premier League.

A 17-5-12 record at Brentford left me feeling good, so I decided to continue on in the save, and see where it took me. Then, just ten days after leaving Brentford, I interview with recently-relegated-to-League-One Nottingham Forest, the day after 17th placed Newcastle interview me. I figured I'd be happy with either position and whichever came first I'd join. One month and two days past my exit from Brentford, I was hired as Nottingham Forest's manager. The locker room is in turmoil, everyone wants to leave. There's no way this could go poorly, right?

If only the league had a third sorting rule for games won I wouldn't have been called into a meeting to discuss why I failed to meet expectations and have to beg to keep my job. Even though we still qualified because FH won the league cup.

I'm not even sure what this save is really. I just started with every top flight league in the default db loaded expect for England, German, France, Italy and Spain. So everything but the big five. And this was the only team that offered me a job. Not sure what I plan to do really. Move around or maybe try to make Iceland a big boy league and win a WC and a CL with them or something.

Best (worst?) thing about managing in Italy is facing the ultra defensive tactics

          Edit:

Always nice when you're on the other side of one of these games. Beat my rivals without our best 3 players in Belotti, Falque, and Ljajic who all also happen to be attacking players.

Haha, oh god, I'm learning this. Playing with Sampdoria in my Journeyman save is my first time managing in Italy. Some of the teams seem totally OK with setting up with half their team in the defensive third and grinding out a nil-nil, lol.

It has been challenging for me as a manager, because I usually try to employ a possession based methodical attack. And I think with some of these teams sitting back more, we're just not able to break through.

I have always wanted to have a decent counter tactic, but never really been able to get it to work. Oddly enough, I'm having a lot of success with it in Italy.

In my final bid to not get fired and shelve FM 18 for at least a week before the fire burns again, as well as find a save that keeps my interest, I'd like to introduce you all to my newest team.

              Torpedo Moscow.

              First - HELL YEAH TORPEDOS.

Okay, now that young me is out of the way, Torpedo is a club that was huge in the 50's and 60's, mostly because of "the Russian Pele" Eduard Streltsov. Recently relegated to the third division due to financial troubles, I've undertaken the task of becoming the fifth Moscow team again, and making it the best Moscow team.

Italy is my favorite league to manage from 5 major European nations.

Only downside with them is that I can't really use the reserve squad to get players fit since you can only use 1 player that's older than 21 in the match.

Edit: I mean, where else but Italy would someone show me their heart?

City is such a dumpster fire in my save lol

17/18: won PL/FA Cup, lost in CL final
18/19: 3rd in PL, fired Pep and hired Zidane
19/20: currently 5th in PL with 10 to play, knocked out by Lyon in the CL, fired Zidane and hired Ancelotti

In mine, Jamie Vardy is managing West Ham, and they're a perennial Champions League/title contender club. Lol

How do you manage to do that so often? I've never lost the dressing room in any of my saves.

Combination of low reputation, my general lack of rotation, and a bit of my abrasive IRL persona making it's way in to the game.

Its mostly reputation based. If you don't have a rep that equals or is higher than the club/players, its very hard to keep them if you aren't getting great results week in and week out. Also if you piss off a team leader or highly respected player with lower rep, its basically all over. The dynamics this year has really made a Journeyman save very difficult if you can't get good results out of the gate if you get hired by a club with higher rep than yourself.

But if you are a player that always makes yourself the best possible manager, or clicks the check boxes to match clubs rep of the division, you'll never have this issue most likely. But those of us that like to start at the bottom and work up, its given us a much harder path than previous games.

I can't ever give myself higher than Semi-Professional Player, everything else would take me out of the game realism wise.
