    FM Tactics Thread

I thought I would start a thread with arguably the most important area in Football Manager games....the tactics.

For those who are new to the game, tactics are what can decide whether you win or lose. You might have the best players in the world, but if your tactics don't suit them, you simply will not win...plain and simple.

    Some Tips:

    1. Do NOT change tactics constantly - When you start a game, please be patient. It sometimes takes a while for a squad to settle into a tactic so give your lads time to get used to your style. Often, friendlies are a great way of using your tactic and testing it out. Tweaks are fine, but completely changing a formation constantly will hurt your team

    2. Your tactic should fit your current crop of players - This is also very important in Football Manager. If you don't have good wing players, then it's best not to use a tactic that employs wide play. Make sure you have players who will fit into your tactic and that will save you lots of transfer money and help your team be successful.

    3. Pay attention to your Backroom Staff - Your backroom staff are a good resource (if they have good stats) for tactical strategy when facing opposing teams. Read what tactics other teams struggle against and use the advice to your advantage. I lost count of how many times I tweaked my tactics and ended up completely blowing out a team. It works a lot....

    4. Player Roles - One new feature this year is an overhaul of the tactics system. FM 10 offers the ability to assign player roles and give them more specific instructions on what to do. If you've studied your playing staff well, then you should be able to give your players good roles and instructions. IE. You want Cristiano Ronaldo to run in from his wing and cut in and thanks to the new Player Roles feature, you can make him do it A very nice feature thanks to Sports Interactive

    5. Experiment - The possibilities are overwhelming for tactics. If you googled FM Tactics, you'd get a ton of links. The official forums are great for tactics, but the best piece of advice I can give you is to simply try creating your own tactic. The game's tutorial does a great job of covering tactics and it's a lot of fun to create one. Try it out in your friendlies and tweak it as you see fit. It's very fulfilling when your tactic works well in a real game setting.

Of course, there are lots more tips, but I hope you can use these introductory suggestions in helping your team win the league. Tactics are easy to learn, but hard to master....

Good luck and hope your team wins its share of games

Thanks for the tips, I just got the game so right now I'm just listening to what my coaches are telling me. I'm still in the preseason but have won every game so far (w/ Leeds) including a 2-1 win over Chelsea. These will definitely help out as well!

The only thing I can say about backroom staff is make sure you have a good staff....I'll cover staff in another thread though.

I run a 4-2-3-1 that takes advantage of the good wing players Spurs have (Lennon, Bentley, Krancjar, Dos santos, and training Henrique as a AMF so he can get more playing time).

My main problem is creating goals. Most of my goal come from my AMF players, and I've only had one match where my striker is dominant (Defoe scored a hattrick in one game, nothing in any other match).

I want to slowly break in a more standard 4-4-2 that can employ more of the deep strikers on my squad, but I'm scared of it disrupting team harmony. How long should it typically take for players to get used to a new tactic? What I plan on doing is trying out the 4-4-2 in cup matches, then use it as a late tactic in league matches that I'm winning. My goal is to eventually be able to switch between two completely different formations without going through a period of poor play.

I also need a tactic to kill off the final 15-20' of a match that I'm winning. Does anybody have any suggestion/links to a good "kill game" tactic?

Switching to 4-4-2 should not be difficult to switch from a 4-2-3-1 as you have wingers and should be fine. It should take a few games, but I'm not the most knowledgeable for tactics since I've generally stuck to one tactic for any team I've managed save for tweaks to approach and style.

If you do stay 4-2-3-1, set your striker to Target Man with a support role and see how he does. I know when I've played 4-2-3-1 I set my striker to Target Man support and he scores a lot of goals. Mind you, my striker was Torres and he's a goal machine in FM games lol

I like to break in a formation in the preseason another option is to use it for the lesser games like cup matches or bad premier league games. Although a 4-4-2 shouldn't be too difficult most of the players are familiar.

I usually go very narrow and slow when I'm trying to kill off a game not sure how exactly your 4-2-3-1 is setup but you can always bring more players into the midfield and set your wide player to not run forward so much

Yeah, the 4-2-3-1 I use for Away matches is much more conservative, down to a counter attack mentality, and I have my winger & FB's play less aggressive attacking football.

Maybe I'll just tone it back even more to create a kill game tactic. The real problem is my outside mids (Lennon, Bentley, Krancjar & sometimes Modric) don't offer much defensively, and I don't really even have a combative outside mid until O'Hara returns from loan at Pompey.

I should really invest in a more defensive minded outside mid to use off the bench or in away matches when I need more defensive responsibility on the outside. I guess it kind of makes up for it by playing two deep lying DMF's (Sandro, Huddlestone, Palacios & Jenas rotate to fill those roles). They play deep, narrow style, which helps make up for the lack of defense from my outside attacking MF's.

                  Re: FM Tactics Thread

I've been looking at different tactics for my new squad, and am currently using a 4-4-1-1, using the attacking midfielder as an advanced playmaker, and the lone striker as a target man. Two wingers on the outside. Since through balls seemed to be a problem in my few sample friendlies, I set one defender to limited/cover, and the other to limited/defend, hoping that the covering defender will be able to snatch up some of the problem balls.

Now, about the target man. His jumping is at 16, so I'm wondering if choosing the setting which will make most of the deliveries to him through the air will be more effective than my current option, mixed.

                  Any ideas?

That would be good although if his finishing is also high, mixed isn't bad either.

Finishing is 12, so I guess I will give air a shot in my next friendly. Hoping trial and error will turn something up before the season starts.

How much will air be favored?

Depends on how you set your crosses in your tactics. If you float them, you'll get your share of crosses to the target's head.

Hmm ok, I have those set to default.

I'll have to play around with it to see if I can get the best out of everyone. Hopefully it isn't too much of a change to throw the team off form during the season.

Just got this email for anyone that's interested. I've read the tactics guide they put together, and they know what they're talking about.

"We're overwhelmed with the support everyone has been giving us the past few months. Thank you so much for all the kind words and an especially big thumbs up to all those who sent back our Tactical Theorems '10 survey sent out two week ago! With over 250 responses of feedback (some that were *really* detailed - which was awesome to read!), we're positive that our future work will be even bigger, better and help you even more in your Football Manager pursuits.

Some highlights and trends we found from the surveys were quite easy to see. Many are having problems figuring out exactly who the best players are for each tactical role, organizing your defense, creating effective set piece routines and understanding what the touchline instructions do "under the hood".

Well, we're committed at FM-Britain to provide you with the highest quality help in tackling the issues you're having in the game tactically. As a continuation of our dedicated service to the FM community, this week we will be holding our first special event of the year:

I was wondering if anyone out there had some good tactical strategies for away matches.

It's not so much the better teams I have trouble with. I can accept drawing or losing away from home against a better team. And usually I can hang with strong teams and sneak a win here and there. It's the weak teams I'm baffled by. I can't seem to put goals away and end up losing 0-1 or drawing 1-1 quite often against teams I should have no trouble with. Do you all have a different formation on the road? Do you start out with a different general philosophy? I just don't know what I'm doing wrong when I can crush a team 4-0 at home and suddenly have no clue in their stadium.
