Yeah, I think that should have been a red. Although the ref called that wrong. He called advantage, then when the second player missed, called the penalty. Either it's advantage and is not a penalty, or it's in the box and is a penalty. You can't give advantage on a penalty call.

I think the ref made up his mind right away that he was giving a yellow, thus allowing them the advantage. Had he deemed it a red card he would have whistled instantly. Just my opinion.

You're right, that's what the ref did. I'm just saying that under the rules, you can't call a penalty but allow advantage. Either it's a advantage, and thus not a foul in the box, or it's a penalty.
