Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
Regardless, they will need to bring in more players like Sanchez and fewer players like Giroud...
...not that Giroud is lousy, but rather the team needs a some A+ options in attack...they have had squads with great B+ attackers, but it's not enough.
Welbeck and Giroud? Never was going to amount to much...Walcott hitting a ceiling, AOC might not pan out. ...Sanchez was a great signing, Ozil is a nice fit...
It's hard to look at their list of midfielders and defenders and think they're horrible...it's the attacking options, and has been for a while.
That they have consistently qualified for the Champions League is either or both A) a testament to Wenger/Arsenal overachieving and/or B) a statement about the quality of EPL football beneath, say, the "bigger" clubs.
Their biggest problems are the players they've been hanging onto for far too long (Ox, Walcott, Ramsey, Gibbs), and their midfield. Coquelin is nowhere near good enough for a team aiming to compete for major trophies, having someone like Xhaka is pointless if you don't have a strong midfield presence to control him.
As for the defense, Koscielny has never had a partner with even half his ability. He's constantly covering for whoever he's paired with, reminds me of Cahill with Ivanovic last season except for Koscielny it's every season. I'm amazed he hasn't tried harder to leave, I'd have been fed up with that nonsense a while ago.
Like I said, Giroud is fine, Arsenal just needs a better starting striker. Giroud would probably be the best backup striker in the league. Not Sanchez though, he's not a striker.Comment

There isn't a player mentioned above that can't be upgraded which really can't be said of Alexis/Ozil given the fact that everyone who is an upgrade is at a Tier 1 club.Last edited by KG; 03-25-2017, 08:24 AM.Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
I think Xhaka would thrive under a different manager. Will he still have some discipline issues? Yes, as that may take more time to break, but I've mentioned in here in the past that he's apparently told people close to him that he's tactically lost at Arsenal. His role is always changing or undefined, and it's never clear what they want him to do.
As for his discipline, he needs to improve, but it doesn't help that he's foreign, and was on the end of a few stupid calls early on in the season which have given him a reputation he does not fully deserve. His first red card of the season was an absolute joke. It was a professional foul, a blatant trip, and a yellow card—nothing more. Since then, he's become an incredibly easy target. He needs to improve—don't get me wrong.
As for Giroud, I think he's always been the victim of supposedly being our first striker. He's shown he can change a game when coming off the bench, or even when starting against certain opposition.
Once again, I think he improves under a different manager. There will be times when he's on the field and we do not try and find him at all with crosses. When we suddenly do, he scores or at least hits the target.
Tactically, this team seems to be behind at least 50% of the league. No preparation, unorganized, and not setting up players for success.Comment

Any predictions for tomorrow?
I think we could score a few goals, but I think we might give up a few, also. I don't see we how we escape with a win, honestly. Maybe we grab a 2-2 or 3-3 draw, but I'm guessing they'll press us and as usual we'll show no ability to deal with it.
Should be a fun watch for neutrals.Comment

But he'll have a war chest of transfer money to improve the squad! Things will be different this time! Maybe he'll even bring back a former player to help him coach, because that'll suddenly fix every squad issue!Comment

And we'll rid the squad of Alexis and Ozil and their bad attitudes! They only care about money! We'll be much better off once we ship them out, give Theo another run up top, let Coq develop more, and have Gibbs take left back once we sell Monreal.
Can't wait.Comment

Not sure why Mustafi vacated his space to win that header. Stupid decision.
As usual, we look unorganized and unsure of what we're doing defensively. Almost as if we haven't prepared for the match for the last two weeks.Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
The look on Koscielny's face after City pulled back ahead was so telling. He can't defend a goal on his own, yet it seems as if he often is. Great saving tackle, but it was too late and too much happened before for it to even matter.
Consistently our best player, whose mistakes are often caused by him attempting to cover for someone else.
I believe it was the first leg against Bayern, he went wide out to the wing, thus leaving space in the center for one of the early Bayern goals. On the surface, without looking any further it seems as if he vacated his space, and a goal was then scored from that space. But really he had to go wide to cover, as nobody else was going to because everyone else was out of position.
He's one defender often doing the job of two, if not three.Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
Well, 2-2, not too surprising.
If we were in a better position in the table and in better form, this would be a good result. However, anything other than a win was a disappointment here based on previous results.
Still likely we finish fifth or sixth.Comment
