    ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***

I think it’s just until the end of this season.

Chelsea just did the same with Pedro and Willian as today was apparently the deadline.

That would make the most sense, but most of those contracts, I've seen reported as "signed an extension til the end of the season" instead of "new contract" though the reporter could just be going for the interaction of replies by saying "new contract"

But I doubt his wages would match that. I'd also venture if it was just to finish out the season, the reports of the deal previously would've mentioned that. Also, it's Arsenal, so it's hard to look at it and assume they got it right.

I’m just looking for positives. On surface, it’s an awful re-signing and a waste of money.

I don’t know why anyone would be pessimistic about contract negotiations and Arsenal.

Agreed Suntan. Once I looked into it and saw that his agent was pushing for a 2 year deal I began to question the “extension”

            Good luck with that Arsenal

At least Leno’s injury wasn’t bad as it looked. No ligament damage.

It’s nearly July, meaning if no lockdown and no setbacks have occurred, we signed him knowing we wouldn’t see him play?

                Seems odd..

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***

                    Here are my morning thoughts.

                    Luiz
I'm beyond angry and disappointed, as this more than anything signals we're officially a club who values our relationship with certain agents more than anything else. The sport has long been about who you know, and who you can sign, which is why the whole "Why don't Arsenal try and sign (blank)" never has made sense. It's more complex than playing Football Manager—you have to have relationships with agents.

However, we've gone to the dark side of being an outlet for certain agents to get themselves and their players paid, it seems. If we're not there yet, we're certainly heading for that, and with that will come even more mediocrity as we'll fill gaps, but only with players we're offered.

The only positive I can even see when thinking about a contract extension for Luiz is this: think back to the Man City match. It's our first game back after a long break, and Arteta's team selection was crucial in terms of building momentum towards something. He did not start Luiz, but instead Mustafi and Mari. To me, that could say something about how we'll see Luiz used next season.

As of now, I do not think he's a first-choice defender for Arteta, but is instead cover and experience.

                    Cedric
Well, we need cover at RB, and at least we signed him on a free, right? So, there's something...

                    Mari
I like this. It's clear they saw enough months ago to essentially make this permanent before it was. Once again, think about who Arteta picked for the City match—one of the defenders was Mari.

Yes, he's not that quick, but he's decisive and has great passing ability with his left.

                    Ceballos
Thank goodness we only extended the loan until the end of the season. He has not shown nearly enough to be brought in permanently—not even close.

Did Luiz sign a 2 year deal when he made the move?

Meaning that he extended for another year after next year (when his 1st contract runs out)?

He did sign a 2-year deal when he signed, but this 1-year deal just changes the final year of this contract as far as I'm aware(or the 2nd year may have well been an "option" year)

Xhaka appears to be fit for tomorrow. Given the metrics of when he plays vs when he doesn’t under Arteta, this is fantastic news.

From what I'm seeing, Luiz signed a two-year contract, and the second year was an option year. We did not exercise the option, but instead signed him to a new one-year contract.

Which hopefully means we cut his wages, or put in provisions regarding bonuses and appearances, etc. If we signed him for another year and are paying him the same, we even more deserve the mid-table purgatory we're headed towards.

My hope is that his wages cut, or they're dependent on appearances with the plan that he's not going to feature as much going forward, which means lower wages. I said it before, I truly believe that by starting Mustafi and Mari in the first match back, Arteta showed immediately where he views Luiz. Luiz is faster than Mari, I'd say, so I don't think it had to do with speed, but instead overall decision making.
