Does anyone think real change will actually happen? With the World Cup expanding (confirmed?) in the next couple of ones which makes it easier to qualify where does the incentive to actually make real changes come from?

I think real change will happen at the USMNT level, but really something needs to happen at the youth to high school level. American athletes need to start committing to the sport. Who knows, maybe with the recent concerns with football soccer will benefit.

Problem is that most people think a strong showing at the World Cup is necessary for any such expansion in long term interest.

I dunno....I think Bora Milutinović has a credible argument there.

I think Jurgen Klinsmann would have been better as president of USA soccer than national team coach, because the changes he was talking about were more global. He had a large hand in re-thinking the German system after their epic failure in the Euros 2004, and that re-boot (nicely detailed in Raphael Honigstein's "Das Reboot") subsequently produced the 'golden generation' that won the world cup 10 years later. We need those kinds of changes in the US, from the top down.

Happen to have any links or suggestions on where I could read something on that? (short of buying an actual book of course)

I don't know what his argument was, but it's always easiest to make the coach the scapegoat. Everyone did it with Klinnsman and now Arena. As soon as Arena's winning streak was snapped, I saw it...like a snowball rolling downhill, the Arena hate started and gathered momentum.

Sometimes you just have a bad pool of players and there's nothing you can do about it. That's us.

Arena is not a good manager, this is a fact. He is not a scapegoat, he is part of the problem.

Also, our players aren’t THAT bad. You can’t say stuff like that when Honduras and Panama are going to the World Cup. We have a better pool of players than they do, we just aren’t using most of the actual good ones. An out of form Ethan Horvath would have probably saved at least one of those two goals today, but we bring three 30+ year old keepers to every national team outing instead of using the kid who’s been playing Europa League since he was 18. We left Cameron on the bench in favor of one of our worst available CB partnerships. Speaking of CBs, we are using a crap Omar and Besler, along with trotting out a handful of other mediocre MLS defenders instead of even giving a mild chance to players like CCV and Miazga. McKennie is a guaranteed starter at 19 for Schalke in the position Bradley THINKS he’s playing, but instead we keep thinking Bradley will recapture his form and then bring on freaking Dad McCarty to “help”.

Gulati and co. have been on a mission to prove MLS players are top class, which is why we end up with Zusi as a right back and Chris Pontius anywhere near the damn national team, and it has cost us dearly. I’ve said this before, there are American teenagers out there in Europe who are already more talented and just as experienced as these MLS players we keep insisting on using. We needed to start transitioning years ago.

I refuse to let people chalk this up to “sometimes you have a bad pool of players, nothing we can do”. There is something we can do, we just aren’t doing it.

Really? You mean the guy who is undisputedly the best coach in US men's soccer history? The manager who took us the furthest in the World Cup than any other manager? That guy, not a good manager?

You really need to take a step back and reevaluate. Maybe he's not quite the coach he used to be, but to say he's not a good manager when clearly he's been one of the best this country has had....c'mon.

Pay for play is a killer. It works to some extent with USA Hockey for a few reasons one being that there is a good college system in place and has been for many years. You don't need as many players to field a team. There are a few established hotbeds of hockey in the States.

Until the disadvantaged kids get a shot in this country we have no hope of every fielding top flight teams.

I absolutely hate when people state an opinion and attach a "this is a fact" to it.
At best it comes off as trolling.

So who is next in line to coach the USMNT? Who can we reasonably get to get things turned around?

Do we promote Tab Ramos from the youth team, take a stab at someone like Ancelotti or even Atlanta United's Martino, or just play it safe and get one of the young MLS guys like Caleb Porter?

We need to make a much bigger splash than getting one of the MLS coaches, but who will take this job and challenge right now?

Seeings we have literally had zero international success that means anything in the last 16 years, I think we should start from the ground up. Keep Pulisic and start anew from the top down. This loss can not be tolerated, accepted or deemed ok in any sense of the word.

Unfortunately, missing the last two Olympics showed that we had a gap in talent amongst age groups. We have some great young talent that should be ready for Qatar 2022 (or wherever it’s held).

Build the next squad around Pulisic. And start playing our young keepers in international friendlies.

Regardless, the soccer federation, the MLS, and others need to come together to formulate a plan to make sure this never happens again.

And get rid of pay to play. Poor kids play soccer too. The next Messi or Ronaldo could be here in this country.

Really...did anyone not see this coming?

Bradley and Dempsey should go down as the leaders of the most underachieving, disappointing generation.

All the bad press Landon Donovan used to get, all the talk about how soft he was, etc...

The team never had heart after he left. Bradley is an embarrassment as a regular starter, not to mention captain. Dempsey has acted like he's too good for everyone after his one big season at Fulham. Both of them were trusted for too long...simply handed their roster spots. No pressure on Altidore...

Bruce Arena...well done...way to go.

If Gulati isn't gone, then there's no reason to follow the team. If I want to see Pulisic, I'll watch him play for Dortmund, a team with heart that runs.

But he’s NOT a good manager, not anymore.

Arena hasn’t been a good manager for a while now, which is why he’s no longer managing the Galaxy either. Are you seriously suggesting we ignore how bad he is right now just because he USED to be a great manager?

Nobody is saying he’s never been good, people are saying he’s not good right now, which is true.

Pulisic should march right up to USSoccerHQ and pitch a fit...the kid has to be embarrassed, and should be.
