The 2015-2016 EPL Discussion Thread

Sunderland have managed to draw against us, make city look like a mid-table team and beat united while villa are just losing to everyone. yesterday reminded me of newcastle against us in 2013, it was just a team of misfits who didn't want to be there

on the whole I agree with carra, villa are an established premier league team and they look like they got lucky with promotion last season

Newcastle and Sunderland are just as embarrassing honestly.

Sunderland at least has a competent manager, and it shows in how they've now climbed themselves into a position where survival is very possible. I'd be very afraid if I were a Swansea or Norwich supporter right now. You don't want to get into a relegation battle with the new EPL zombies. Absolutely nothing about Villa is competent at the moment.

I think maybe you guys don't understand how big Sunderland and Newcastle are. They are among the biggest clubs in terms of supporters. They both have massive stadiums that they consistently fill, and they both routinely out spend clubs that finish above them. They show "fight" for about half a season every year, while spending the other half playing some of the worst football in the top 4 divisions of England.

The resources and players those two clubs have access to should land them VERY comfortably mid table, and yet they are constantly battling relegation. Both clubs buy managers and players that will save them from relegation, with very clearly zero plans going forward other than "don't get relegated". Compare them to clubs like Southampton, a club which is MUCH smaller, has far less cash to throw around, and still manages to finish far above while playing great football and constantly promoting academy players.

Newcastle is probably even more shameful than Sunderland, they used to be title chasers and CL/EL regulars.

No, I understand that with Newcastle for sure. Monkeys with typewriters in management should be able to finish them midtable. But I think I've already explained my position with Sunderland. They have literally always been a division 1.5 club. Maybe they shouldn't, but that's what they are.

I'm not sure you understand the dearth of young talent in those areas, which, combined with a catchment area that includes the north west, it makes it hard for them to actually attract young talent

as for getting a top class player to go to either, it just won't happen. Sunderland aren't actually that big a club, they do have a big stadium but that isn't that huge in terms of how big a club they are. Newcastle likewise, they've always been a team that's just there, they're not successful in terms of winning things and they missed their chance to become something in the 90s. the Southampton comparison is unfair when Southampton are in an area saturated with big clubs, but they've always been known as a hotbed of youth. that said, they've only recently began playing good football, only 10 or so years ago they had beattie and crouch up front

there have been 'big' clubs up here that have gone into meltdown because of how difficult it is for a northern club to succeed. firstly, we're not exactly favoured by the government so funding rarely gets any help from councils as they barely have money (making the stadium of light, Etihad, macron all massive achievements). but look at Leeds, they're one of the biggest clubs in English history, champions league players 15 years ago and now they're a shambles of a football club because the north is difficult

Well Leeds is a different story altogether. They kicked the can forward on transfer fees and salary so much while cash poor. Banking on future CL runs. A gamble that they still haven't recovered from. You can blame that on funding policies of the government, but really what it comes down to is having an owner that can back the club. Same thing happened to Pompey.

Oh yeah I'm aware of that, but they've still managed to get young talent, they just do a Chelsea and ship them off or play them wildly out of position.

I never said I expected top class players to join those two teams, I was saying that the quality of players they've had at their disposal should translate into a much higher league position.

They used to be Spurs in that they would flatter to deceive. People forget that Shearer chose them over Manure.

Newcastle has the ability to spend money, but somehow can't get it together.

Although he did save them from trouble in the beginning, most of Newcastle's problems stem from their owner.

Am I missing something about weekend FA Cup games? Would doing away with those actually help?

100% on board with doing away with replay games, and I'd be more than happy to see the league cup gone forever.

probably the beginning of implementing a winter break. if the fa cup doesn't take away a weekend every few weeks, it means league games can still be played weekly and can be distributed more widely throughout the season

Problem with doing away with replay games is a lot of those smaller teams make a crazy amount of money by getting a replay away at a PL ground. An away day for a league 2 side at say Old Trafford or Anfield can have a massive impact on the club.

The FA should definitely do something to compensate for that loss, but asking the FA to do something competent is asking a lot.

Replays are only a pain in the butt for PL teams.

I dunno, I know a lot of lower league fans who don't really care for them. it's a nice payday but especially for promotion chasers. it adds another game onto a 46 game league season

a good start would be making sure lower league teams are given TV games in the cup. United are on a run of 11 years without having a game not on tv which is ludicrous
