Guess we were watching two different tournaments, I thought it was far from garbage. Great win for Portugal.

Horrendously unsatisfying tournament. Each game felt like a chore, the group stages had no juice, etc. Not to mention Portugal having no business even advancing, let alone winning the entire thing.

The best played game was Germany/France and even that was marred by controversy and lucky garbage.

The Copa America tournament was trash too. Brutal summer.

Guess it all depends how you look at it. Wasn't the prettiest football played at this tournament but there were some great goals scored with a little gritty unpredictable football played.

There were a few great individual goals, I'll give it that.

Pretty decent couple of months for CR7. (minus the injury)

As far as international tournaments go, it wasn't horrible. I think sometimes people go into these competitions excited, and they forget how national teams tend to play. Definitely not the same as club football.

Portugal had the best defense and never lost a game, not sure how they don't deserve this.

It's not like France were amazing this tournament.

12 years ago Portugal were the most exciting national team in Europe, playing fantastic free-flowing attacking football all the way to the final on their home turf, which they lost to a team that attacked even less than Portugal did today.

Congrats Portugal, you finally got your revenge.

                    Re: Euro 2016 Discussion Thread

As the only guy rooting for Portugal -- cos of that boy Ronaldo -- in a bar full of French, I'm so damned happy he finally got a trophy for his country. Seeing him admitting to himself that he can't go on was tough, but the TEAM stepped-up. They rode their awful start out and grew into the match, while France, for some inexplicable reason, looked content to simply not lose and go to penalties if needed. Why in the hell would Deschamps play Pogba so far back? He did great back there, but it totally wasted what he could've offered playing a bit further up. Martial could've been a difference maker if subbed in earlier as well.

People hating on Portugal because of the format are just salty as hell. They didn't change it, nor did they ask for it, but they got to the final and WON. You can't take that away from them just because "under the old format, they wouldn't even be in the knockout stage!"

Messi can take the number 2 seat now. Ronaldo just inched past into number 1.

                      TEAM of EURO 2016:

                      Rui Patricio (Portugal)
                      Joshua Kimmich (Germany)
                      Jerome Boateng (Germany
                      Pepe (Portugal)
                      Raphael Guerreiro (Portugal)
                      Toni Kroos (Germany)
                      Joe Allen (Wales)
                      Antoine Griezmann (France)
                      Aaron Ramsey (Wales)
                      Dmitri Payet (France)
                      Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

The team of technical observers chose a 1-4-2-3-1 formation and Portugal - who defeated hosts France 1-0 after extra-time in the final - led the way with four players, including captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Only players from the four semi-finalists were considered, which meant there were no members of the England, Italy or Spain squads selected.

How can Gareth Bale not be included?

Restricting the selections to fit a specific formation would be unfair IMO. What formation do you settle on?

Just pick the best XI regardless of formation and move on.

You'd have to have some sort of formation so it's not just the attackers that get picked.

I don't think they should have restricted it to just players from the semi-finals. Off the top of my head, some of the stand out players for me were Buffon in goal, Bjarnasson and Ragnar Sigurdsson from Iceland, Ivan Perisic, Marek Hamsik, Glik and Krychowiak from Poland and I thought Nani played the best football I've seen from him in years.

First few games of the tournament were kinda meh for me and I was left wondering whether or not I should make the time to watch full matches. Thankfully, the tournament picked up a bit and there were some good games and great goals that would make any highlight reel. The final was basically a movie that wrote itself. Congratulations to Portugal!
