Im just saying I don’t know if that applies here. Playing from that back with this keeper on zero confidence and in this situation didn’t exactly work out too well.

Right, in that situation it wasn't wise, which is why I said "I think there's definitely times for both options." As in, yes, sometimes you need to clear the danger.

Bringing up Arteta's quote was a general defense of the strategy due to the over reactionary disdain of playing from the back that is widespread.

That mistake will send pundits into a frenzy about how playing from the back is silly, dangerous, and how they don't understand it. They won't focus on this instance—they'll focus on attacking the philosophy while refusing to attempt to understand it. They'll use Kepa's mistake to attack the idea of playing from the back as a whole—that's why I wasn't only referring to his mistake.

Arteta's quote is the best, most succinct defense of the tactic I've ever heard.

It’s not that the pundits don’t understand it because anyone who watched Barca with Pep knows why it’s useful it’s just that for some the risk outweighs the reward.

Not too mention you’re literally playing it right into a high press and not just any high press, the best high press in the world.

A lot of the disdain against playing it from the back comes from the idea that some teams are just forcing it regardless of the formation, personnel, or situation. Chelsea almost got caught again a few minutes ago. Of course there are times for both and the days of just hoofing it down field are numbered. Same as the days of just playing it outside to wing and crossing it into the box. Today though it was a terrible situation. Chelsea probably wasn’t going to level this game anyway since Liverpool have taken their foot off the gas but still. It literally sealed the game needlessly.

I truly don't think some understand it, or are at the least intentionally contrarian regarding its usage.

I know—I commented on it repeatedly specifically regarding Lindelof, in a conversation with you, and how too many sides who have no business playing from the back attempt to replicate those who excel at it.

Christensen was having such a good game up until that red card probably the best I have seen him play at Chelsea.

Fabinho had a phenomenal game and Thiago makes some good passes and it’s all anyone is talking about lol.

Like Thiago is great, but those are passes you expect him to make, it’s literally what he was signed for.

I’d love to see a replay of the second time Werner went down in the box near the end of the game, looked like potentially another foul by Thiago but I don’t think anyone cared.

Definitely a bit annoyed that Thiago managed to concede a penalty, stop 2 counterattacks with tactical fouls, and possibly made a second foul in the box all without seeing a single card, and then he’s hailed as the Grand Magician of the match lmao.

I really didn’t think Thiago had a great match. If anything he had a pretty important negative impact but it was a wash since it didn’t end up hurting them. It’s hardly a good judgement though since he came in to a game when the opposition is down a man.

Yeah I mean, a midfielder as good as Thiago is obviously going to look great vs a team playing a man down and giving him all the space in the world.
