    Yeah I loved it.

But that’s also because I know in other leagues, **** like that gets you fined because “we can’t have the Kids doing this”.

Maybe I'd be more okay with his antics if he was actually one of the top GKs.

Also, I'm trying to figure out how he won the Golden Gloves with a 53% save percentage. Or does FIFA just award it to the GK on the winning side disregarding every thing else?

EDIT: I did some digging on FBRef and of 41 GKs with at least one start, Martinez was the 33 worst at preventing goals.

But he was in position to make a World-Cup-Saving 1v1 stop in the waning minutes of the final and the other 32 weren't.

This was the best argentine defense in history, and it was suspect all tournament long. Argentina doesn't make great keepers. The two go hand in hand.

Who was the best, according to FBRef?

Of those in the late rounds, Dominik Livakovic (Croatia) then Andries Noppert(Netherlands).

Figuring out why certain players have won certain titles is a level of sleuthing I aspire to. We just had a whole thing about Gavi winning best young player, and many thought he was not deserving.

              Was it really though?

Think I remember them saying that Lloris had 6 saves in the final, and that equaled Martinez tournament total.

They kept bringing up Argentina's near collapse against the Netherlands but one of those goals came off of what was simply a brilliant set piece and the other was the result of numerous hail marry's into the box directed at the Dutch giants.

Martinez was top shelf in the two penalty shootouts but other than that his front 10 made sure he didn't have to do much in the tourney.

Regardless, his performance in those shootouts gives him pass to act an *** a bit even though I'm not a fan of him.

He was tied both Bono with the most clean sheets in the tournament as well.

Usually the golden glove award goes to the keeper with the most clean sheets.

Save percentages for the GKs tied with 3 clean sheets:

                  64%
                  43%
                  77%
                  64%
                  71%

You can guess which of those is Martinez

This is the part I don't understand as clean sheets is more about the defensive collective versus the individual GK performance. In Argentina's three clean sheets, Martinez only had to make a total of 3 saves. Then, he only saved 3 of 8 shots on target in Argentina's other matches. Not really a stunning individual performance outside of shootouts in my opinion.

Are you including penalties and shootouts? Because on non-penalties/shootouts, Martinez's save percentage was only 53.8% (not listed in your list).

If my script is getting the right data, Martinez actually didn't save any penalties during the WC. For some reason though, I can't find any data on shootout save percentages. Anyone know where that data is hidden?

                        Its from Fox Sports:

14 shots on goal, 6 saves.

FBRef counts only 13 SOG. I don't know what caused the discrepancy

That's interesting. I assume Fox is getting their data from StatsBomb and FBRef from somewhere different.

Regardless, they both tell you that he shouldn't have (logically) won the Golden Gloves.

Not the first time someone was given an individual award behind team performance and won't be the last time

He also made one of the most important saves in the history of the sport all things considered:

The xG here has to be pretty significant.

Unfortunately I can't find xG per shot numbers, but France did have an overall 1.1 xG in the second half alone, which would imply that shot was around 0.5 xG considering how xG is calculated.

Regardless, it was an unbelievable save, especially considering what he meant at the time. I'm not doubting whether or not he had a great save or a few great games, I'm just saying overall he wasn't deserving of the best GK at the WC award.
