Depending on which modeling you're using, .5 XG is pretty significant.

Also, the only thing that matters for Emi's trash talk/being a dick/etc for me is that he won. We can sit and talk about his performance until the end of the time, but history will only remember the fact that he won. The people who I can't stand are the ones who keep going after they lose, and people who have played for Tottenham Hotspur, not necessarily in that order.

Talking **** about your opponents while you are celebrating your greatest sporting achievement is kinda pathetic if you ask me. Messi is really the only thing redeemable about that group.

The xG here has to be pretty significant.

That was such a massive save. Thuram should have really buried that.

I guess I'm gonna have to ask for the "rules of celebration" since y'all are gonna be so sensitive about it.

EDIT: I don't want any confusion with the new people here, but this is sarcasm. I ain't tryna start no weird **** lmao.

Sensitive? Nope, just giving an opinion.

For the record I thought the glove dick was hilarious.

If it’s something where both sides are/have been talking trash, I got no problem with dudes getting the last word. It’s Sports Entertainment and that’s what it provides lol.

This goes in any sport btw.

I also don’t mind keeper antics during the shootout. You’re putting yourself at big risk for looking like a complete jackass like Kepa in that final last season. It seems to work for Martinez, so have at it.

The antics are a perfect encapsulation of **** talk in sports imo. You get to gloat when you win, and you get dunked on mercilessly when you lose. Like imagine he does that shoulder shimmy after the Tchouaméni miss(not even a save!), then goes on to lose, instead of him being all over for the GK award photo, it'd be that. Just like the next time he faces Mbappe(unlikely playing for Villa at least lmao), I'm sure Mbappe will have some words(goals) for him to think about.

The celebration police have infiltrated our tiny section of the forum?

I don't mind the celebrations, just don't understand how you troll someone who scored a hat trick against you. Besides, my problem with Martinez is that he won the Golden Gloves when he didn't deserve it.

Ah, deserve—the hardest thing to quantify in sport.

Unrelated to anything else going on in this thread, how did we feel about the semi-automatic offside? I thought it was pretty quick, and would like to see it implemented anywhere it can be with VAR. I know the Premier League won't do it, but it sure was better than whatever line drawing we were doing before.

                            I thought it was terrific.

I also liked how they added the appropriate amount of extra time in both halves.

Same, it felt excessive, but correct? Like I understand the only reason my brain immediately identifies it as "excessive" is because I swear there is a TV rule that you're not really supposed to go over 5 minutes added time at the end of the game. It seemed like in all of the games I watched it took something egregious to get more than 5 minutes of added time.

I will be a little sad if some people become less dedicated to the dark arts of time-wasting, but knowing that it won't go away all at once I will at least enjoy it until the sport becomes fully corporate.

No whistle to whistle number yet, but including pre-game per Nielsen, this was the most watched English-Language men's World Cup Final yet, 16,783,000 viewers. Interested in the actual whistle-to-whistle numbers, as the broadcast apparently peaked at 33,000,000 viewers.
