In the 20/21 season he had the fifth highest save percentage, made the third most saves, and faced the third most shots on target.

In the 21/22 season he had the ninetieth highest save percentage (oof), made the most saves, and faced the most shots on target.

He's always been a busy keeper, and sometimes frequent actions can be perceived as higher performance than is actually happening.

Really, it just always seemed he was performing incredibly well considering the amount of shots Leeds would allow to be peppered at him, because he was. Check out the following comparison between Emi Martinez and Meslier from the 20/21 season.

    Shots on target against:
    Meslier: 188
    Martinez: 186

    Saves:
    Meslier: 137
    Martinez: 133

    Goals against:
    Meslier: 52
    Martinez: 46

    Save %:
    Meslier: 76.6%
    Martinez: 78.0%

    Clean sheets:
    Meslier: 11
    Martinez: 15

Lastly, something that too often is forgotten about Meslier...

    Age (20/21 season):
    Meslier: 20
    Martinez: 27

He was performing at a fairly high level, as a keeper, at 20. Give him a break.

“If Arsenal lose the title by 2 points, would they have a good legal case?”

      “Yeah I think they would”

Actually conversation between two real people lmao. Arsenal fans are something else sometimes.

Continuing the theme of this weekends refereeing issues

Mario Lemina for Wolves gets a 2nd yellow and is sent off vs Southampton for “aggressively walking towards and crowding the ref”

So apparently there’s a rule where the ref can give a yellow if two or more players surround the ref. Not a bad rule in theory right.. but one I’ve literally never seen enforced. We’ve always been told the captain has the right to speak to the ref but he’s either the 1st or 2nd person to the ref here (can’t tell from the video) and the ref is still like… “Naa, it’s you Lemina” [emoji23]

        What a league

It needs to be a rule everywhere. Refs get no respect on the pitch, and that attitude just becomes the norm among fans, the media, everywhere. They get manipulated and then thrown to the wolves. Players are way to comfortable approaching refs like that.

                Re: 2022-23 English Football Thread

That turd running around in black is, to me, a shining example of what referees need to stop doing if they’re to ever assist in changing the way they’re spoken to.

He (like most English referees, but he’s the best example of it) responds to players with smiles, laughs, head shakes, and general dismissive behavior.

Yes, players have to treat with referees with respect (duh) but if you speak to people like children don’t be surprised when they act like it in return.

It’s one aspect of the issue, but it’s an aspect that shows the general attitude of communication needs to be altered by both sets of individuals. I know, we don’t get the audio, but you can tell so much by the way they laugh off protests, refuse to explain decisions, and in general act like a kid on the playground that the teachers said were in charge.

People like to say referees need to be protected, which often means insulating them from criticism—no, they need to be held accountable, be transparent, and speak about their decisions.

They officiate games as if they’re babysitting, and not presiding over athletic competitions at the highest level.

                Ah, Monday.

Pickford picked a weird time to go for a walk.

There might not be another keeper I enjoy seeing scored on more than him.

Let me check all the starting keepers real fast...nah, it's Pickford.

At least Liverpool are doing their duty to help Everton get relegated, unlike some teams...

Robertson reacting exactly the way I would if Pickford acted like he was gonna do something to me.
