Re: 2023–2024 English Football Thread
Newcastle plays like this because literally no referee will do anything to them.
Now Bruno is just kicking the ball at people and squaring up lol Is there a yellow for him yet? Nope!
That wasn't even close to a red for the foul on Longstaff and it totally unraveled them apparently.
Oh that was def a red card by Kai. He left his feet. We’ve seen those calls be pretty standard this year but someone upstairs wants the game to be 11v11.
Agreed about Bruno though. Squares up and pushes Rice while Atwell is right there and he’s just like “yeah play on” [emoji23].
The NFL has pretty bad rules (the roughing the passer calls namely) but nothing tops the Premier League when it comes to incompetence. Even in the United game the ref went to the VAR screen for an offside call. Since when are offside calls subjective [emoji23]

He accidentally caught him with his trailing leg late. And Longstaff rightly got a yellow for selling it, which is why everyone freaked out and the match went off the rails.Comment

That Havertz lunge was even worse. He should be off at this point. They need to sub him off.Comment

Mikel’s waiting for him to score before bringing him off, as it would be the perfect finish to his day.
But he’ll likely scuff one wide of an open goal before sauntering off.Comment

Have to give Bruno credit. At least he’s not hiding it. If the ref is going to let you sprint 10 yards and shoulder charge someone in the back, you might as well do it.Comment

Raya is top tier in terms of claiming crosses—worth saying because he’ll be **** on for his positioning even though it usually works for him.
Apparently it wasn’t a push just like it wasn’t an elbow earlier but a forearm…

As for Newcastle, this will be my piece on them: I hate the entire identity they’ve created because it has worked to win over the entirety of the English media and officials. They’ve spent money but have very, very intentionally have chosen to create a physical, back to the good old days English football squad, and don’t feel ‘foreign’ or continental.
I said more than a year ago that if you watch them to any moderate extent you’d be surprised at how much they get away with, and I specifically mentioned Bruno. He runs around the midfield hacking away often, yet is only ever praised for playing hard.
Owned by Saudi Arabia, but have expertly made themselves the darling of England.Comment
