Ichiroooooo: gorilla is not dead

Oh no, he is. Art Donovan, who said the "Gorilla, is he dead?" quote from the infamous WWF King of the Ring 1994 (won by Owen Hart, aka Brayden Schenn), died on August 4th, 2013. We'll always remember him as the worst pro wrestling commentator and best cameo in The Adventures of Pete and Pete.

He also said that quote in the first match, with Bam Bam Bigelow (dead) against Razor Ramon (somehow still alive). Bam Bam's manager, Luna, is also dead. As is Gorilla Monsoon and Randy Savage.

Poop.

bthomp05: Interesting move. Who's in the running for his job?

Connor McDavid

GoldenJet!: This is Nail Yakupov's pool, and we're all just swimming in it apparently. Great to have another HeroWorship chise, man

Good to be back. Although I imagine that Nail's pool is very dirty.

Play of Steen has fans happy
Bill Hoppe

Alex Steen loves dogs

When the Buffalo Sabres traded away winger Thomas Vanek, Alex Steen was only a throw in for the prize, prospect sniper Ty Rattie. Steen, like Vanek, is entering the final year of his contract, and expectations of him were tame. After all, Steen has only scored 20 goals twice in his career, and he's also been bitten by the injury bug.

Throughout the first 35 games, Alexander Steen leads the team in goals with 23. His play has softened the fact that youngster Nail Yakupov is in the midst of a slump. This is despite playing on the third line with Steve Ott and Ville Leino. But Steen has a problem with only one thing.

"I wouldn't call our line the third line" Steen said after morning practice at the Northtowns Center. "We have four very solid lines that we can roll. We really don't have a top line on this roster, because all four lines can score, and have showed it throughout the season."

The 29-year old Steen admits part of his motivation was not only to help the Sabres, but a personal accomplishment for himself; playing for Tre Konnors. With the Olympics on the horizon, Steen would like to play for his country in the Winter Olympics, something he has never done in his fourteen-year professional career.

"I'd be lying if I said that playing for Tre Konnors wasn't important and a priority" Steen said. With Henrik Tallinder and Jhonas Enroth also competing for the chance as well, Steen admits having them on the roster is a blast.

"Having other guys that want to go to Sochi to represent Tre Konnors is motivating enough, but also good in terms of discussion."

Steen's production hasn't just been on the scoresheet. Head coach Ron Rolston has praised Steen as being one of the better forecheckers on the roster, and his no-nonsense attitude has been good for the younger players on the roster.

"He's not a vocal guy, he let's his play dictate everything" Rolston said. "We love him for that. He's not a me-first player. He works with the younger players. We only hope he returns next year, because he's a valuable veteran to have on the roster."

Re: This is Gonna Hurt: The Buffalo Sabres Experience

Half Way Point: The Sabres are for Real

The Sabres are not just pushing the league, but side panels as well

If someone where to have come up to me prior to the start of the regular season and told me the Sabres would be the class of the league, I would have left the area, found the nearest fire alarm, and pull it. I would have been led to believe that I was speaking to a man who needed to be locked up in an insane asylum, with the key being thrown away.

The Sabres aren't your ordinary squad, however. In the toughest division in the entire league, the team remains on top. They aren't the offensive firepower they began the season with, but they've developed into an effective unit, capable of making the pundits who predicted the team to finish dead last irrelevant to the ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup.

Managing the new expectations doesn't seem to be a problem to the team. With no major injures, the team solders on into the second half of the season, hoping to make the remainder of the season as smooth as the start. While the goaltending remains suspect, the team will still have two months to figure the situation out before the trade deadline is upon us. They'll continue the platoon of Jhonas Enroth and Steve Mason for the time being.

The team is overacheiving alright. It's similar to the much-beloved 1996-97 squad; without a superstar, but a team that works hard on every shift. They're the lunch pail gang, a homage to the teams of old. Even Don Cherry gushes about the grit of the club, even praising European players like Nail Yakupov and Ville Leino for blocking shots, and playing 'the North American' way of hockey.

They do have three players averaging more than a point per game; Yakupov, Cody Hodgson, and Alexander Steen. The latter was acquired by the Sabres without expectations; you could say it was a favor to the Blues to take on his salary in order to process the trade that sent long-time Sabre to the Blues in September. Steen has 25 goals in 42 games, already a career high, and has positioned himself for a nice contract come off-season time.

Even John Scott, who had one career goal in his entire NHL career, has 4 at the half-way point in the season. This is despite the fact he, himself, has been limited, with the constant switch between Scott and pest Patrick Kaleta from game to game in the lineup.

Christian Ehrhoff has played like the captain he was given, despite the fact his linemates have changed throughout the season. He's a Norris trophy nominee, a consummate professional, and a player that is slowly making the fans believe that, in the words of Sabres broadcaster Rick Jeanneret, that this team is good, SCARY GOOD.

If anyone expected this rebuild to happen this fast, they'd be lying. The Sabres are a team that will continue to progress, but I can't say they're pretenders. They can play; they will continue to win, and maybe, just maybe, they become the underdog story that everyone loves to cheer for. And how good is that? The city of ridicule becomes the city of Champions.

It has a nice ring to it.

Re: This is Gonna Hurt: The Buffalo Sabres Experience

Love Steener...one of the most under-rated players in the league, although people are starting to pay more attention to him. Had an impressive goal and an assist last night. Just solid...all the time.

Nice work on all this. You sim or play all games?
