Not much to get excited about:

    Projected lineup:

    RF Brian Giles
    2B Tadahito Iguchi
    1B Adrian Gonzalez
    3B Kevin Kouzmanoff
    CF Jim Edmonds
    SS Khalil Greene
    LF Scott Hairston
    C Josh Bard

    Projected Rotation:
    Jake Peavy
    Chris Young
    Greg Maddux
    Randy Wolfe
    Mark Prior

    Projected Bullpen:
    Trevor Hoffman
    Heath Bell
    Cla Meredith
    Kevin Cameron
    Justin Hampson
    Joe Thatcher
    Wil Ledezma

Third place is the most likely possibility. I would like to both Headley and Antonelli sometime this season, but all in all, nothing to look forward too. Our rotation is still good (pitching as a matter of fact), but outside of Adrian and Kevin (I think he does better this year), our offense is still weak.
I think the Pads will challenge the DBacks all summer long for the West. I don't see the Rockies having the kind of year they had last year. The Pads will be tough this year. I am not that thrilled with Edmonds in CF, but Iguchi at 2B is an upgrade and Kouz really came on in the 2nd half last year. As long as the pitching stays strong they have a shot.

Over the weekend the Padres have locked up Khalil for 2-years. He'll still be free-agent eligible after the 2009 season, but it avoids the two arbitration years he'd have under the remaining years under the Padres control.

Apparently we are going after 1B Tony Clark and Kevin Towers called Steve Finley and told him to get ready to play/stay in shape.

Once again we will be competative. However we won't make the playoffs and fans in SD will be happy. Everyone else in the division got better during the offseason.

I don't know man. The Dodgers aren't going to change overnight just because of Torre, the Giants didn't do anything big except get rid of Bonds, the Rockies got rid of Jennings, but didn't do anything to make themselves that much better.

Meanwhile, in SD, Kouz has a full season under his belt, Gonzo is working with Gwynn, Greene will be playing for a trade, so you know he oughta put up some decent numbers.

I think the Padres have just as legit a shot as anyone else in the division.

Not sure how/if it will effect the team. But Moores might now regret moving to California. "I want half"

Tony Clark signs. Now Adrian doesn't have to play everyday.

The official website of the San Diego Padres with the most up-to-date information on news, tickets, schedule, stadium, roster, rumors, scores, and stats.

"Towers indicated on Monday that he and Padres CEO Sandy Alderson will sit down sometime this spring to talk about a new contract or, at the very least, picking up the 2009 option on manager Bud Black's contract."

"The Padres have been linked in at least one Internet report to free-agent outfielder Shannon Stewart, though Towers said unless there's an injury, "I doubt we will bring in any free agents."

Looks like we are stuck with what we have.

I dont think this year will be as bad as people think. If you look at our opening day lineup from last year and compare it to this year, this years is a lot better. Whoever wins the left field job is gonna be much better than the crap that was Terrmel Sledge. Iguchi at second is better than Marcus "suck ***" Giles. And I think Edmonds could easily match Cameron's numbers at the plate. I think hes good for about 18hr and 70rbi. Kouz also has a year under his belt and hopefully will start this season the way he finished last. Gonzalez and Greene continue to improve. Bard played better the second half and Barrett cant possibly play as bad as he did after we got him, so they should be better. Our rotation should be at least the same or better than last year. The only question I have is if Brian Giles can produce at the top of the lineup.

                          1. You can't do that. Lineup still not in place and don't point out the projected lineup, that's still not set in stone.

                          2. Depends on who wins it. Even then, they still have to match the 24 home runs and 74 rbis from last season in LF to improve from that position.

                          3. Iguchi is mediocre at best. He put up only decent numbers in hitter friendly parks. Giles was at the same level as Iguchi back in 2007.

Don't get too hyped up. Greene won't duplicated 27 home runs nor come close to 100 rbis. He's not improving. If he was then we'd see an upward trend in his OBP and AVG.

                            Some things to note:

It's possible that both Edmonds and Giles will not make the opening roster due to injuries. That would mean Headley definitely wins the LF job with Hairston temporarily claiming the CF job and Gerut in RF. That's a "Who are these guys?" OF, but I think they're capable of accomplishing what Edmonds and Giles would accomplish... not much.

Khalil Greene is already in midseason form... looks at a first pitch fastball for a strike and proceeds to swing in miss on the next two pitches. What were those pitches? Breaking balls. Jot him down for another .250 avg., .290 obp., .450 slg. season again.

Adrian Gonzalez is proof why you don't put too much stock in spring training... well, Ichiro is a better example, but Adrian finally got a hit recently after going 0-fer in two weeks of ST.

Jake Peavy got frustrated at the young Angels pitchers for teeing off his fastball, so he broke off what he wanted to do and started pitching at them. After giving several runs due to the steady diet of fastballs, the young hitters were neutralized by sliders and cutters.

Adam Bass looks like another bullpen find. He finally gave up runs today, but I can see him replacing someone in the pen for that final spot.
