    WTNY's 2016 Pitch Edits

UPDATE 4/3 -- PITCH EDITS ARE HERE..for 2-pitch pitchers, you'll have to make up a 3rd pitch. I suggest adding a type of fastball at about the same velocity as the primary fastball. Maybe someday Sony will drop the minimum pitch requirement.

    last update: 7/20/16

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    COMING SOON.

The work is done and I'm just waiting for Opening Day rosters to be locked in so I can post the most updated spreadsheet possible.

What's included? Pitch edits for ~960 pitchers based on data from Brooks Baseball updated through the end of the 2015 season. In some cases Spring Training data from 2016 has been incorporated for newer players. In some cases, older pitch edit data has been used for players who haven't appeared in awhile or have been injured.

Take a look at my thread from last year to get a feel for what this is about.

I'm enthused about this year's data because I made a couple of key (in my mind, anyway) improvements from last year.

    1) For guys with down-breaking sliders, I was able to better credit them for that this year in the movement ratings. Some guys that benefit a lot from this off the top of my head: Michael Pineda, Tyson Ross, Jeff Samardzija, and Chris Archer.

    2) I was a bit stricter about sample size in the sense that I was much more skeptical about using data from a relatively small number of pitches to calculate a control rating. In some cases, I erred on the side of using career numbers or regressing the data a bit to get rid of some really high/really low [undeserved] ratings for control of various pitches due to small samples.

I'll update this when the spreadsheet goes up. Happy gaming!

Take a look at my original post! It's already done.

I'm just waiting until Opening Day so I can stay on top of transactions. It makes the data entry a bit easier for people when the players are listed with their current teams.

Once the spreadsheet is up, I expect whoever wants these can enter them into their rosters...whether OSFM v3, Hybrid, or other.

do you know if sookiebunnie's OSFM updated roster contains your pitch edits from last year ?

and how long did it take last year before fully edited rosters were released ?

          thank you

            1. No idea. No clue who sookiebunnie is.

            2. That depends. This is not a roster first of all--it's a set of edits that people other than me can input into a roster. It may take some time for the OSFM v1 to come out, then usually the v2 is just error corrections to v1. Then after that, the pitch edits are applied to what has usually been called OSFM v3. So I can't really say how long it will take to get a roster with pitch edits, because it depends on how long OSFM v1 and v2 take.

The pitch edits data will be here in this thread and ready for the taking on Opening Day though. The idea is that anyone can enter it into any roster they want. You just have to find someone (or a group of people) willing to enter the data into the game. Last year 55 put the pitch edits into OSFM and a few others did the same for Willard's Hybrid roster. It usually takes a few solid days for someone to do from start to finish.

Sounds like yourself and Teeds won't be continuing the Realism roster this year WTNY?

I'm not a fortune teller, but I think that's fair to say. I'll probably work on a roster for myself to use, but I don't envision another massive project like last year. teeds is taking a much-deserved break after 3 years of a really incredible (and perhaps unhealthy) workload with lording over rosters. I think and hope he will sit this iteration out.

I also don't really want to turn this pitch edits thread into a discussion about some roster or speculating about some roster, but thanks for asking.

Thanks for your hard work! I love me some pitch edits! SO just to be clear, these must be entered from your spreadsheet (still unreleased) to a roster of our choosing?

Will you by chance be uploading a roster with these edits?

                  Thanks!

                    1. Yes, the edits must be entered from a spreadsheet into a roster of choosing. It doesn't have to be OSFM, but it could be. Yes, the spreadsheet has not been uploaded yet.

                    2. No, I will not be uploading a roster. I am just providing the data for the pitch edits. Other people will input them into various rosters as they get the desire to have them. This distributes the work a little bit better than making a single person do everything.

I'm definitely interested in using pitch edits this year. I'll wait for OSFM before I put the edits in. Thanks for doing this!

PS Will you be removing pitches as well. For example, I'm a Yankee fan and Tanaka has a Curve in the game but I never see him throw it in real life.

The whole point is to give pitchers the correct set of pitches, so of course. I don't even look at the game to determine pitch types to start from. I go straight off of Brooks Baseball to create the spreadsheet.

As to your Tanaka example, he actually does throw a curve (he threw 173 of them in 2015 according to Brooks Baseball), but it's actually his 6th most frequently thrown pitch. Since we only have 5 pitch slots (I am guessing this hasn't changed), there's no room for the curve in his video game repertoire. Tanaka throws the splitter most often, then the slider, 4-seamer, 2-seamer, and cutter in that order.

Good job dude, I know firsthand how time consuming of a process this is, which is why I stopped haha. Brooks is so amazing, wish there was some way their database could be mined by the devs (sure would save the community a lot of time).

Thanks my man. Got the idea from you and just trying to carry the torch. I actually had no idea how incorrect the stock rosters were until I wandered into your thread/spreadsheet a couple of years ago. The Show devs say they get stuff from MLBAM, but if that's the case they probably suffer from automatic pitch classification instead of manual as well calculating velocity at a point that we don't see on the live broadcast radar gun readings.

And no kidding! If only this data were downloadable from Brooks. Going through a player card at a time seems so arcane in this day and age. The inputting of data into a roster would still take some time, but the sorting, updating players, and calculating would go much faster.
