Earning strikeouts.

I'm having the toughest time this year in punching out batters. I'm really curious though if it's because of the mediocre (at best) rotation and the atrocious bullpen of the Cubs. My best pitcher is Kyle Hendricks and he's an 85 overall. My bullpen is full of guys in the 70's and I have two players that have ratings in the low to mid-80's (Dan Winkler 84, and Craig Kimbrel 81). Right now through the first nine games of the season I have the fewest strikeouts of any National League team with just 51. The only team that has fewer is the lowly Baltimore Oriles.

I pitch on Hall of Fame with classic (basically Armor & Sword's sliders) and I will not really consider changing that. In year's past I've had issues here and there striking out batters but not quite like this year. For anyone that uses similar settings and plays with the Cubs, what are your numbers looking like? And for anyone that plays with my settings and has a good rotation and bullpen, are you getting good strikeout totals?

I know you clearly said you wouldn’t consider switching from HOF classic but hear me out.

I also used classic HOF default and simply put you’ll never get the realistic strikeout totals. I don’t obsess over stats but I was using the Indians who have a killer rotation (clevinger and Bieber are an 88) and I was also dead last in Ks

I went to completely default all star for pitching and it’s been really fun. I like for it to be possible to strikeout a huge amount of batters. That’s just so fun to me being able to completely dominate hitters. Last year IRL clevinger struck out 10 in 5 innings vs the white Sox. I feel like in the game on HOF that’s almost impossible

All star really brings out the ratings for pitching in my opinion. Hitting is another story (I use HOF with lowered slider values)

You can also still get rocked on All Star believe it or not. Like I said, I know you clearly said you wouldn’t switch from HOF but if you want realistic strikeouts you need to atleast just try all Star. If there’s not enough teeth for the cpu hitters try upping contact by 1. Hope this helps even though I really elaborated on something you said you won’t do lol [emoji23]

I pitch the same way. I found the game the opening weekend was great. I had swing and misses. Now after release day and the last couple patches. HOF classic has been awful.

Pitching with guys like Cole ball drifts to middle of plate. Give up a lot of home runs and see few swing and misses.

I use HOF classic with Mike Lowes sliders set and have no issues getting guys out swinging or looking.

I used to pitch with pure analog, I might give that a shot again this year. I really like having the clean screen, but I’d also like to have a little better success punching out hitters.

I also use Armor's sliders and HOF classic pitching and just had 10 ks with Dinelson Lament on my opening day game. Granted he has a 89 k/9 rating. I will see how the rest of my rotation does since they are mostly low 80's and 70's. But I have not had a big issue so far with my test run games.

Not that I think Armor & Sword's slides arent great but its also important to realize that everyone has different play styles so you might need to tailor your sliders a bit. Try different sliders or modify them yourself. I am only 4 games in with the Blue Jays using Mike Lowes sliders (on Legend pitching) and am currently tied for 10th. I know this is a small sample size but so far in my games I have been able to get batters to chase on balls out of the zone and if I change speeds a lot they will be behind or ahead on pitches. It feels great! And trust me if you think the Cubs pitching is bad....
In comparing the two slider sets I can see Mike Lowe has changed CPU batter stats much more drastically. CPU timing is 0 compared to 5, contact is 3 compared to 5, solid hits is 1 compared to 5 etc. I think this is all in an effort to get this feel. Maybe try adjusting these specific areas of your sliders to your taste? Or if you like the feeling with Armor and Swords hitting but want to try different pitching sliders sliders than use Armors for hitting and Mike Lowes for pitching! If you fear that Mike Lowe is lowering too much stuff and thus will make pitching easy you could always try on legend too. So far my games have been 2-5 (L), 4-0 (W), 9-7 (W), and 4-1 (W) so I have had a nice variety. Just my 2 cents anyhow!

Just finished a Spring Training game where Jack Flaherty struck out 8 thru 5 innings. We struck out 13 as a team for the whole game.

3 games prior to that, Kyle Funkhouser struck out 5 through 3 innings of work.

I think the CPU is better at picking up patterns and its essential that you use the PITCHER/BATTER analysis tool to ensure you're not pitching patterns and to see how you've pitched a batter in previous at-bats.

Agreed! Often times my second time through the lineup I will start the CPU with a change, curve, splitter etc. Even if its not a strike it gets them thinking

I’m the cubs as well on default legend and get maybe 3-4 strikeouts a game. I think I only have 10 with Hendricks through 5 starts

As much as I like the clean screen approach I just think I’m going to go back to analog pitching. I’m going to keep other things the same, being no visual aides other than the meter used to pitch obviously.

I’ve definitely had to change my approach at the plate this year.

In my March to October I’ve blown quite a few saves being to aggressive (the commentary’s even talked about it)

I’ve never felt the fear of power hitters like this before.. now I won’t even pitch to them at all

What I do is, I start playing on HOF classic pitching for about 10-15 games (which is fine until you can get anybody out because they make contact o EVERY pitch thrown to them) then go down to All Start Classic pitching.. this will set the CPU Difficulty in the middle of both, kind of like All Star Plus if you will... this way you get a perfect balance, you will still get hammered if you pitch carelessly.

I use HOF Classic button for hitting.
