They didn't just say it in the past - they still do.

I don't think that paragraph in the guide has changed since Directional was introduced. The second section is obviously new, though. I wouldn't take them saying it's aimed at new players as any kind of a slight - they also say it's similar to the CPU which means it could be considered the most "fair" of all the hitting modes when it comes to playing vs. CPU.

Re: Timing hitting back?

This is interesting. From an extremely small sample size last night, I would have assumed differently, that if you did not use the influence, it may hurt slime of your contact when set to directional. I blasted two long home runs with Arenado last night on Timing, and really hit well, scoring more than normal, with some nice hits into the gaps.

I went back to Directional, mostly because I just like the way using it makes it feel more immersive enough to me. Part of that is just that I’ve used Directional for so long with 2K, that is just “feels” right.

That said, I figured out pretty quick that you can’t play on line with directional and actually do well. I think one of the prime reasons SMB3 is so good online is that the controls are what they are. Everyone has the exact same advantages or disadvantages.

If Sony wants to keep so many play styles in the game and continue to move players to online play, they should create separate timing and cursor based competitions.

I feel online becomes a duck hunt fest with zone hitting. There is a lot of baseball strategy hitting with directional rather than zone. I go directional in franchise and zone in DD...I have tried directional in DD but you will struggle with all the zone hitters who have that OP strike zone hitting.
