Ever wondered what you would REALLY be rated in NBA 2k?

Has anybody else wondered this? I was playing MyPlayer and wondered what 2k would rate me if I went through tests and drills.

I know I wouldn't be ranked very high. I am 6'5 and have only played PF and C my whole basketball career. To add to that, I tore my ACL a year ago and have not played competitive basketball since. My strengths are mid range shots and spot up threes. My free throws would be 90 percent but everything else would be in the 30s lol.

    What about you guys?
The way to build a good team is not to load it with star players, but to load it with players who play well together with an identity

Re: Ever wondered what you would REALLY be rated in NBA 2k?

Yessir, I was discussing this on another board a few weeks ago. Sometimes I create my former teams or teams of my friends and usually I'll rate them relative to how good they are amongst their own competition. Therefore, a solid 6'5'' center for a mid-range high school could theoretically be a 70 on my created squad. This way my created team of friends could theoretically run against NBA teams.

However, I have recently been considering an attempt to accurately and truly rate myself and my friends, then seeing what would happen when we played an NBA club. There's some pretty low rated players in 2K11, right? Like, nearly mininum overall rating? That makes me feel like there'd be no way for any of my friends to have a higher rather than say, Jerome James (36 overall).

But in theory, is it possible - and I'm not saying this is a certainty - but is it possible that maybe Jerome James at this point is just a 7'1'' guy who is kind of straggling around the NBA because he's 7'1'' with some skills in very specific locations (say, defensive rebounds, post defense, shot blocking)? Which would then possibly mean there could be other players not in the NBA that could have higher ratings in more categories?

It's just really hard for me to find the right frame of reference. Ben Wallace's mid-range rating is horrible, but I hear he rains during practice all the time. I swear I'd have a better chance of hitting spot of J's than him though, even with a defender looming (kind of looming, not in my grill). Conversely, I feel I am a knock down shooter from the high school three point line (which would be like a mid-range J), but from the NBA line. . .that percentage is dropping quickly. And I know I'd get rocked on defense, I had minor league point guards roasting me last time I checked.

But I swear I think my speed would be medium, and my vertical would be more than serviceable and my hustle would be dynamite.

I'm wondering what other people think, is there any way a normal guy who was a high school All-Conference and Area selection at a Class B school with a division III college pedigree could gather an overall above 2K11's minimum?

I went to a smaller enough high school where I was technically the pf at 5'11" but really what I did was take post players outside and posted up guards. I'd assume I'd be like 10 overall then.

I wonder if I could make myself below a 0, so like if I take a shot we lose points or someone breaks an ankle or something

You could look at the average ratings for players at taht position in 2K. Bring up a players card and look at his ratings. There is another rating with the league average. It works for tendencies, too. You could just create a player starting at those averages, and then adjust for strengths and weaknesses.

I just exaggerate. Tailor some of the ratings to the position I will play, PG or SG. I'm a knock down midrange pullup jump shooter, so I put that in the 90's with a high tendency of stepbacks and fallaways for when I post up. I could knock down some set shot nba 3's, but I have to put an extra push on the ball, so high 70's/low 80's. Free throws all the way up. I used to be good at on ball defense and stealing, so I would put those above average, high 70's or 80. Even though I couldn't dunk, I would occasionally get comments on how much I "got up" so I would put myself as a rimgrazer. I miss odd layups, so that would have to be low. Not a great dribbler, but I can keep control of it, change the pace and am a good passer. So ball security and passing is high. I'm out of shape, so stamina is low. Since I haven't played a lot of organized basketball, I would keep my offensive and defensive awareness low. I'm not fast, but I can be quick. I ended up a 74.

I think the important thing to do is set your tendencies right, because they can give you a boost if you play like yourself in real life. By the end of the season, my cap goes into games between 78-80 overall.

Righto, that's typically how I roll. But I think what the original poster was wondering was what would happen if we were to attempt to rate ourselves completely true to life, and not relatively? So instead of an 80 NBA 3pt rating, you might be closer to 30-40 according to how you described yourself. And since you can't dunk, your dunk rating would be 25, etc.

The good news is at least I know I'd have a dunk rating.

Even the lowliest players on all of 2k would destroy just about anyone in a game of pickup. I think it would be hard to rate yourself when the rating system is there to rate NBA players relative to each other and not to basketball players overall.

My wonder though, would be. . .does Jerome James kill me in one-on-one (or in a match-up during a 5-on-5 game) because he's literally sicker in nearly every skill set? Or might I, say, be a better ball handler than him by chance? I mean, even if I could dribble better than him, James admittedly is destroying me - for he is a 7 foot behemoth of a man who had enough skills for his size to make it to the NBA. But is there a chance a regular joe could out rate some NBA guys in some categories (while acknowledging it doesn't mean we're about to take them down in a game of one-on-one)?

For instance, do you believe you could beat Ben Wallace in a free throw contest? 2003 John Stockton in a dunk contest? Arvydas Sabonis in a footrace? Bo Outlaw in a curl and shoot from midrange contest? Oliver Miller in a hustle contest? Out-ball handle Chuck Nevitt? If the answer to any of those questions is "possibly. . ." then I'd think you'd warrant above a 25 rating in at least some categories (even though I'm not sure things like speed help an overall).

I think it's an interesting premise.

I don't think so. Maybe in between 50-60. The NBA 3 point line is only a couple feet past the college 3 point line, which is used on most of the parks and gyms that I have played at. I can knock down a 20-21 footer no problem. I think it's the NBA defense, athleticism and my height (5'10")disadvantage that would cause me trouble in shooting 3's. I'm kind of streaky, too.

For the dunk rating, just imagine the NBA rims are 8 feet and how you would dunk on them.

I think the way to come up with things like shooting ratings would be to set the shooting to real fg% so you don't have to worry about user release points, and then do an around the world in practice mode with your player from the respective shot distances, noting the fg%, and do the same in real life then compare and adjust.

Personally, I wouldn't involve myself that much in making ratings. It's just a video game. Have fun putting yourself or your friends in the game, whether you are maxed at 99, scaled, exaggerated or have customized skill sets. Enjoying it is the most important part.

Re: Ever wondered what you would REALLY be rated in NBA 2k?

Thanks to me actually being tall(6'7") and playing High School basketball til sophomore year(I was pretty good, but I did the whole focus on one sport thing, and I loved hockey too much to quit) Ever since NBA Live 98 til NBA 2k11, I've always gone outside on release day, or the week prior, or on the nicest day surrounding it, and done the drills. I take 99 shots from each distance, and I switch it up, for instance, I may take 30 fadeaway-midrange shots, I might do 40 running layups, and 30 standing, with each split equally left handed and right-handed.

For things like ball handles, security and passing, I normally grab some friends and will initiate drills. Same goes for defense, though I normally limit myself at 50-60 for the defensive stats.

The hardest ones for me are dunking, offensive awareness, defensive awareness, the clutch, the stamina, the speed, the quickness. It's hard to measure me athletically, I was always quick for my size, I was a terrible shooter until I turned 19 and magically found a working stroke, and I can dunk, and I hardly miss, but let's not compare me to anyone in the NBA.

I normally end up around 55-68 overall, this year was actually the highest I've been I know my shot ratings were excellent minus my low post(for whatever reason I can't do turnarounds or up and unders) I got a 90 on shot inside, 87 shot close 85 shot medium, 45 shot 3pt.

But either way, I imagine in real life, if 2k rated me against NBA players I'd be Jerome James style of a 36.

Well I'm 5'6, white and haven't touched a basketball since I was 11 playing HORSE at a friends house about 12 years ago. I'd say that gives me a starting OVR at like -20. I could make shots, but we never played 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 so I have no idea if I could shoot around anyone.

I would think I could play as a pass only PG if I ever played a pickup game. I played soccer for years and was very good at learning the speed of my teammates and how to far I could lead them. I imagine some of that would transfer. Plus I could get low and pass around the other guys feet/legs.

I've wondered this many times myself, I'm 6'3 but have played pg and sg my whole life, I've got ups, I can 360 and windmill and pretty effective off the dribble, my biggest strength has always been the 3 ball though, even as far as NBA range, but my quickness would absolutely kill me, and I know I'd get toasted against the big 2 guards in the league lol.. I think I could rebound considerably well for a 6'3 guard but I'd get pushed around easily, if I could get a J.J Reddick role and just shoot some 3's off picks itd be best off lol

I probably would be rated somewhere between 10-20, I'm not a scorer I like setting up other guys for shots.... I'm kinda like a poorman's Rondo
