    Official New York Jets Thread

Figured I'd get a new thread started for the Rex Ryan regime.

Lots of cuts the past week:

    David Barrett
    David Bowens
    Brad Kassel
    Chris Baker
    Brandon Moore

Hutchinson says the team is currently $27MM under the projected cap.

    http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/200...d_brandon.html

Hutchinson also saying the Jets are eyeing Ray Lewis and Bart Scott and are also looking at Vontae Davis and Josh Freeman for the draft, with Brian Cushing and Clay Mathews as possibilities also. I'd be fine with any of the 3 defensive guys, but I want no part of Freeman.

      Nugent declines offer.

I say good riddance. What a waste of a draft pick. Feely was better than him anyway, at least he could kick the ball past the 15 on kickoffs.

Cimini is reporting that a deal with Corey Ivy is close, and that Jim Leonhard is in for a visit tomorrow.

Also looks like we may deal a 4th rounder for Lito Sheppard.

lol, just trying to take the entire defense huh? I've gotta tell you, Ivy is awful but if there's anywhere they can get anything at all out of him, that's on the Jets. He's done well when he can blitz and he's a good tackler, and Rex knows how to use him. Just hope he doesn't have to ever start at corner.

I was thinking Leonhard would end up there, along with Scott, all along. I really like him. He'd be a great addition to your defense and special teams.

Well if anything, Ivy would be playing nickel or dime. I don't think he can be any worse than David Barrett or Hank Poteat whom the Jets sent out in the past.

Looks like the Jets smartened up also and re-signed Brandon Moore to a 4 year/$16MM deal. Great signings so far!

Rex Ryan sure loves those Ravens. DE Marques Douglas signed. He should add some depth behind Ellis and Coleman.

                http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/200...o_terms_w.html

Also looks like the Jets are interested in KSU QB Josh Freeman.

                http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/200...d_private.html

He's a strong armed QB, but he wasn't all that impressive when he played against teams with a pulse in the Big 12. He also only had a 58% completion rate last year.

It's good b/c it'll make it easier to put in his crazy defensive scheme. He starts signing Ravens who play offense and then you should be worried, lol. Unless he goes after Troy Smith which wouldn't be a horrible idea now that I think about it.

Anyway, Douglas is a good addition. Ivy wouldn't be horrible under Rex who knows how to use him.

I am a big fan of Rex Ryan and what he can do with a defense. I think we have some of the necessary parts to become a great defense with the likes of David Harris, Bart Scott, Kerry Rhodes, Darrelle Revis, and Kris Jenkins. These are all playmakers on defense that Rex Ryan will immediately take advantage of. I cannot wait to see what he cooks up

We have proven that Defense doesn't win championships...When will we finally make offense a priority!!! Can we spend $ on some weapons for the 3 young QB's we decided to go with...

Official New York Jets Team Thread

Tons of decisions to make this upcoming offseason. Thomas Jones had one year left on his contract, but looked like a shell of his self at the end of the season, do you bring him back? The Kerry Rhodes saga also, who was benched midseason, but played strong after his benching, but the team may not bring him back because of his salary. There's also the Ghost and do we finally cut ties with him?

A good amount of free agents on the team also: Leon Washington, Brad Smith, Jay Feely, Kellen Clemens, Eric Smith, Lito Sheppard (he has an option, but no way the Jets pick it up or else they lose their 2nd round pick)

Here's a good article by Hutch on what might happen.

Some of the highlights from that article:

It’s unlikely Lito Sheppard will return.
They are leaning towards not bringing back Donald Strickland.
Hutch continues the speculation about whether Rhodes will be back.
He also notes that Braylon Edwards is expected to sign the top RFA tender, as reported last week.
Kellen Clemens is not expected to be back, but hasn’t given up on being a starter.
Jay Feely, out of contract, hopes to return.
Finally, “some in the organization” are ready to give up on Vernon Gholston.

Finally there's also the case of the Final Eight clause in the CBA should the league go to an uncapped year next year. If that happens the Jets wouldn't be able to sign any UFA's unless they let some of their own free agents sign with other teams. Because of this I'd want them to bring Jones and Rhodes back for next season as it would be tougher to replace them considering the restriction in free agency they would have.

Here's a good summary of the Final Eight clause and the effect on the Jets.

                            Looks like Gholston is back.

                            • Vernon Gholston will be back. With no salary cap, there was thought the team would just get rid of him now. Tannenbaum on Gholston: "I have no objective information that the guy doesn't love football."

                            • While the most disappointing player on the team will be back, one of its leaders, running back Thomas Jones, may be gone. "We hope that he's back," Tannenbaum said before admitted that economic issues could get in the way. Jones is owed a $3 million roster bonus in March and a $2 million salary. Translation: he's not getting all that money.

                            • Like Braylon Edwards, Leon Washington will get tendered as a restricted free agent. The lack of a collective bargaining agreement could allow the Jets and Washington to avoid tricky long-term contract negotiations while he recovers from a major injury

                            • Tannenbaum expects Kerry Rhodes back. The buzz on this has changed dramatically within the week.

As an outsider looking in, I'd think it'd be best to let Jones walk and give the rook the keys to the car with Washington backing him up. Someone will surely sign Jones which should allow the Jets to sign a FA, right?
