He was selected in the expansion draft by the Vancouver but was released by the team in the 2041 offseason. Sakai went back to Japan and signed a series of one year contracts with various teams. He retired after winning the NPB Championship with the Dragons. In his time with the Angels, Sakai hit 480 home runs in 5,441 at-bats. He batted .310 with a 1.037 OPS (173 OPS+). He earned 63.3 WAR in that span. In his career, Sakai has 633 home runs in 7,954 at-bats. His career line is .292/.383/.587, good for a .980 OPS and a 160 OPS+ and 157 wRC+. For a power hitter, he made a good deal of contact. He struck out in only 17% of his plate appearances for his career. His posteason performance was equally impressive. He posted a 1.007 OPS in the playoffs in 497 at-bats.

Maeda Furious Over Losing MVP

"I have nothing against Mr. Ankum, but I should have won, " Maeda commented in an interview.

The comment comes after the league announced the AL MVP. Maeda, who posted a .499 OBP, 11 WAR, and was certainly the centerpiece of the Angels attack, lost the voting to SS Khamani Ankum of the Yankees, who posted 10 WAR for the first-place club.

Maeda not only didn't win, he came in fourth, technically, as he finished behind Ishida and McGlauflin. However, it was practically a three-way tie for second.

"Classic 'split the vote' situation. Everyone could agree that Ankum was the key force on the Yankees. But on the Angels? I actually think the voters did right. Granted, on-base percentage is key on offense and Ishida doesn't do as much without a lead off man being on literally one out of every two plate appearances...and McGlauflin was amazing but only one-in-five games...I get the argument, the saber stats agree, but I think it, as votes go, was 'right', " a local sports radio host commented.

"So I have to do even better to win. Okay, challenge accepted, " Maeda continued, "over .500 OBP and 14 WAR is my target. If I hit it, I dare them to not give me MVP."

If Maeda is actually going to improve...that's a very scary thought for AL pitchers.
