At one point of time, it was used world wide. Some countries no longer use it now, but a lot of them still do. It was first thought of in Germany.

Actually, it was first proposed by Ben Franklin, but it's modern iteration was proposed by a guy from New Zealand. Germany was the first to use it about 20 years later.

Since people are talking about things they've watched in here today I'll just say this:

WATCH COSMOS!

Excellent first episode though it was basically just a refresher on things that a grade schooler would know. (things should get more advanced starting next week) The visual SFX was stunning to say the least and when Degrasse Tyson compressed the history of the universe into a calendar year to show how little humanity has been around it was pretty staggering how insignificant in the grand scheme of things humanity is.

I also liked the tribute to Sagan at the end as well, very touching.
