Coach John Shell, age 28, will start his collegiate coaching career at North Florida University. Shell hails from Detroit, Michigan and after a couple years at a top prestigious high school in Detroit, Shell felt the opportunity was just too good to pass up.

Shull names his staff, calls himself a 'stat' nerd

JACKSONVILLE --- North Florida Men's Basketball Coach John Shell named his coaching staff today at a press conference at UNF Arena.

Shell has named long time assistant's Dante Rahad and Martellus Watson as his counterparts as they all make the leap into the collegiate ranks.

"I trust these guys opinions in every aspect of the game. They know me and I know them. I have no doubt we will be able to succeed at the next level," Shull says.

Along with Rahad and Watson, Coach Shell also named a new Head Trainer today in front of very interested media. Mark Hoot, a dullfully experienced trainer gets his shot at running the show after being assistant head trainer at the University of Florida.

In terms of the season, Shull was very optimistic, yet almost hesitant to take questions.

"I usually don't speculate much. That is not a very wise thing to do. I will just say that we as a staff have been and will continue to get these young men ready to represent the University of North Florida the best we can."

Below is a finalized roster (which was released to the media today), the same team which Shell will take into the 2007-2008 campaign.

"I usually don't like to name a starting 5 because, well, you just never know. As a coaching staff, we evaluate every game, every performance and base every start, every minute of playing time by that. I guess you could say I am a stat nerd."

The first game for the Osprey's is just a day away as they travel to College Park, Maryland to face off against the Terps in the first round of the 2007 O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic. Tulsa and Hampton were also invited and will be taking part.

College Park, MD --- Welcome to the big time Coach Shell.

It is no surprise that North Florida's first game was a loss, it really isn't. New coach, new team tactics to learn and to top it off, you're traveling to College Park to play against the Terps on their home turf.

It's no easy task for even the best teams.

"We just didn't have it, to get down by 25-30 before half, it's tough for any team to come back from," says Shell.

Osprey senior center James Grimball got into foul trouble early in the first half and that limited North Florida's attack of the basket. Grimball only registered 9 minutes and was 1-6 shooting for 2 points and no rebounds.

North Florida freshman forwards Justin Cecil and Devon Jones were arguably the lone bright spots as the two combined for 9-15 from the field for a combined 24 points. Jones came off the bench and scored 13 in only 15 minutes.

"Devon had a good first game, I wish I could say the same for the rest of us," Shell said.

Junior guard Tom Hammonds was 3-11 from the field and 0-6 from deep. It is no rumor that if the Osprey's want to have a good year, then Hammonds needs to be integral in the process.

The Ospreys were a pathetic 2-18 from three-point land and 17-53 from the floor.

Maryland dominated the paint, scoring over 70% of their points from it.

Terrapins freshman forward Cliff Tucker scored 20 points, while every Terp except for 1 player scored at least a basket.

As for coach Shell's opening collegiate game, he had this to say.

"Well, I guess every coach has games this like, I just hope this isn't a reoccurring theme."

In the other tournament game, Tulsa downed Hampton 74-73. North Florida will now play Hampton in the consolation game tomorrow night in College Park.

College Park, MD --- Tale of two cities.

Or is it tale of two halves.

North Florida played better than it did in its opening match-up against Maryland, however, were down by Hampton 75-62 in the consolation contest of the tournament.

"We played well, we hustled. Their (Hampton) perimeter game just drowned us down the stretch," Shell said.

Freshman forward Justin Cecil was solid yet again, scoring 18 points and grabbing 8 rebounds.

"As a freshman, you usually don't see guys try to put the team on their backs and lead, but Justin seems to be doing that," says Shell.

Senior center James Grimball scored 12 while grabbing 9 boards.

The Osprey did not have much of a front court contribution today and when asked Coach Shell was asked about the performance of his guards, this was his response.

"Chris (Timberlake) and Tom (Hammonds) are natural leaders. We as a coaching staff just need to put them into a position to succeed and they will be fine."

Hammonds a Junior transfer from East Carolina has 12 points in two games.

Timberlake, a Senior from Miami, has 10 points in both contests.

Both will need to step it up and take control if the Osprey's want to make a NCAA tournament run.

"No team can be successful if they're not firing on all cylinders, and right now we have a few misfires. I am not worried about it though, its early." Shell says.

On the other side of the court, John Ntoko, shooting guard for the Pirates scored 20 of his 25 points in the first half.

Maryland defeated Tulsa 70-68 to become 2007 champions of the tournament.

The Osprey are now off until they travel to Gainesville, Florida November 20 to take on the Florida Gators.

Gainesville, Florida --- Overmatched, outclassed and out-coached are just a few accurate ways to describe the performance by North Florida against the Gators.

North Florida drops to 0-3 after another blowout loss.

"Yeah, I don't know what to say after this one. This was a crappy performance and it all starts with me," North Florida Head Coach John Shell said afterwards.

Coach Shell kept putting the blame on himself, however the stats from his players were not there either.

Playing against Florida is never easy, and playing them on their own soil is even tougher.

This was very mirror like of the Osprey's performance against Maryland just a week or so ago.

"Rebounding and free-throws hurt us again, we will be practicing all of those things in abundance before our next game," Shell said.

Junior guard Tom Hammonds led the way with 16 points, going 3 of 5 from downtown.

"Tommy did well tonight, but we were just overpowered," Shell said.

Florida pressed the floor all night and made North Florida look like confused on several occasions. You can attribute that defensive pressure to 20 Osprey turnovers.

Freshman forward Justin Cecil grabbed 6 rebounds and 9 points in the loss.

There have been questions surrounding the coaching staff and the minutes certain players get during the opening few games.

Coach Shell answered that question after the game. "We put kids in the situations where we think they will succeed and give this basketball team the best opportunity. If a kid has a problem with his minutes, then all I can say is work harder."

Florida who improved to 4-0 with the dominating victory were led by backup Freshman guard Hudson Fricke who dropped 19 on the Ospreys.

North Florida has a week off before traveling to Savannah State in an out-of-conference match-up.

Hey! Coach Shell addressed the q in his post game conference.

You will probably see Wood start getting some more minutes.

                            Don't worry.

Savannah, GA. --- Holy hell. What a game, I can not even describe the emotion going through the University of North Florida locker-room after they edge out a 91-90 victory in double overtime against the Tigers of Savannah State.

Not only does this officially get the Osprey's into the win column, but it is Coach John Shell's first win as a head coach in the NCAA. And boy, what a thriller!

Tiger's senior guard Alvin Edwards hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer of regulation to send the game to its first overtime. Edwards would finish with 15 points on 4-8 shooting from the floor.

But Edwards was not even close to the Tigers best player on the court tonight, that honor was bestowed upon senior guard Joseph Flegler who was literally unstoppable at some points putting up 32 points in the loss.

"There are some guys who are just unstoppable sometimes, and Flegler was that way tonight," said Shell.

First overtime saw back and forth action until the Tigers took the lead late. Then somewhere out of junior guard Tom Hammonds lit himself on fire and hit 2 consecutive threes, one with 4 seconds left to tie the game and send Osprey nation into a flying frenzy. Hammonds would finish the game with 22 points, and 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. "Tommy was huge, take away the heroics to get us into that 2nd overtime and he still is a huge contributor as to why we won today."

The second overtime saw the Ospreys take the lead and hold on until 3 seconds left when a pair of free throws put the Tigers up 90-89. "I don't know what I was thinking, don't make the damn free-throws is probably what I was I was thinking," exclaimed Shell.

The next 3 seconds is a memory this sportswriter will never forget.

Senior Osprey guard Chris Timberlake fouled out late in the 2nd overtime which meant the person to get the inbounds pass would be junior Ashton Jones who was playing the point. Jones gets the inbounds from Justin Cecil and feeds it very quickly into the paint to freshman Devon Jones who one stops, looks up, kisses the heavens, says a prayer to baby jesus and knocks down the buzzer beater layup for the win!!!!!!!!!

As for the win, and his first win at the collegiate level Shell was more relieved than excited when I finally caught up with him an hour or so after the game had ended, "With getting the first one in the bag, I feel like a rock has been lifted off of my back."

Freshman Justin Cecil was the man of the game for North Florida, putting up 26 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Center senior James Grimball also notched his own double-double netting 10 points and 17 rebounds.

"Rebounds were huge, the reason why we won I'd say," said coach Shell. "I have been on Justin and James since the Florida game to be bigger, be tougher and maybe they listened."

However, as for the game, notch this one as one for the ages, definitely one coach Shell won't forget. North Florida is now off for more than a week before hosting William and Mary at UNF Arena December 7.
