This time of year is fun, but also depressing with the lack of prospect the Sox have... At least this year there are slightly better prospects, but not enough to get excited about. At least we got 1 A this year to look forward too! If you have any ideas about the rankings please feel free, I'd love to get all the input I can this year.

Re: OSFM 2013: Chicago White Sox

You don't have if they are high or low or not. For instance, I would go low A on Hawkins, mid-high B on Barnum (ball sounds different off his bat because of his power, helluva athlete could play corner OF, but raw) and C+ Thompson (he strikes out too much, think Brett Jackson), etc. This is a good start, though.

Petricka is the guy that I have trouble with...I think that he'd be best served in the pen. His FB has a ridiculous amount of movement. I haven't seen movement like that since Matt Clement's FB, but he has zero command of it though maybe some control. I guess C+ is best though I could see B- as a marginal regular.

Mitchell strikes out a ton but he also gets on base a ton. He's like a Dunn but with speed and defense in lieu of power. He's a B-. Walker has more speed & defense than Mitchell, but not the power and is younger so he gets a notch up to mid-low B.

                At 2B, Sanchez is a mid-high B and Joey is a high C.

Johnson should be rated higher than Snodgrass. Johnson could be a #2 which would be an A- but a good #3 is more realistic so B+ based on the games rankings. Snods would be a mid B, then. Beck is a B- or highest C possible. He's got things to straighten out. Brandon Brennan should be in here as well and ranked equal to Beck as far as potential. Beck is further along but Brennan could surpass him.

There, those are ALL of my thoughts at the moment.

                QUICK PRIMER ON GRADE MEANINGS:

Grade A prospects are the elite. They have a reasonable chance of becoming stars or superstars. Almost all Grade A prospects develop into major league regulars, if injuries or other problems don't intervene. Note that is a major "if" in some cases.

Grade B prospects have a good chance to enjoy successful careers. Some will develop into stars, some will not. Most end up spending several years in the majors, at the very least in a marginal role.

Grade C prospects are the most common type. These are guys who have something positive going for them, but who may have a question mark or three, or who are just too far away from the majors to get an accurate feel for. A few Grade C guys, especially at the lower levels, do develop into stars. Some end up as role players or bench guys. Many don't make it at all.

I didn't rank them high or low because the game doesn't have high or low (unless I am oblivious to a change in this year's version), but if you want I'll go and fix it.

I disagree with Thompson just because he has improved tremendously with the glove this past season and seems to be moving along and progressing with the bat. Yes he strikes out a ton, but he showed signs of improvement near the end of the season and has a ton of power potential. Plus he's still only 21. I think he'll make a solid OF for the Sox in the future alongside Hawkins.

I'd say rankings for the best hitters would look like this:
Hawkins A- (still has to learn patience which could break him)
Sanchez B (could still end up a utility player)
                    Thompson B-
Barnum B- (jury seems mixed on him, but personally I like him)

As for pitching, I wouldn't rank Snodgress or Johnson over each other. I think they are both B's as each have good potential but issues as well. Beck would be a B- because of those questions that surround him, but remember, he was thought of to be 1st round material before being hurt. I would give Brennen a C+ personally. He's good, but I don't know if I can honestly see him being better than those three potential wise. Petricka is just awful. He's that that sick FB but nothing else to go with it. I think the Sox should move him to the bullpen from here on out. I see him as a C+/C as a reliever, a C/C- as a starter.

We got to be careful not to be too generous with potentials. The Sox are still one of the worst systems in the league, and a lot of C potential players can still see action in the majors.

I'll try to get the list updated either tonight or tomorrow. There's still about 16 open spaces.

That would be really cool if you could help out. At the very least, you could probably get all the correct songs and such played at the park. That sounds right up your alley. Any chance you can get scouting reports on some of the more unknown guys (especially pitchers)?

There are actually 10 sub-rankings in the OVR and POT grades. I think the SDPadres thread actually was using that, but usually people don't say B7 but use mid-high B instead.

I'll go with the popular opinion of Thompson in the end, but his swing has a hitch that doesn't let him catch up--I see no signs of it going away either and until it does, he's mincemeat. That's my personal opinion and time will tell but for this purpose, hell, we could go with whatever they give Brett Jackson--isn't that a decent comp?

Brennan I said to go equal to if not higher than Beck but lower than Snods and Johnson, but you could add him as a person to put into the roster so there is some progress, yay!

Couldn't agree more--the players we are talking about are the only possible B- or aboves in the system! I'd say the safe route when there is disagreement is to look at John Sickels's grade and go a tick higher (if he says B- go straight B). Seanjeezy says that he is a notoriously tough grader (so I must be as well). Funny though, for such a bad system, they seem to get more contributors at the MLB level than 20+ more teams...

I think that it is a decent comparison. He got a B rank when SCEA added him in last year.

                          He'll be included.

Sickels did a good job overall for the Sox, but I did disagree with him somewhat on one or two guys. I think that sounds like a good plan though. Sox seem to pump out a lot of guys that reach the majors but they are never impact players. I never know wether or not that can be considered a good thing or bad thing. A lot of their C potential guys always make it, especially relievers.

                            To add a couple things....

You put Angel Sanchez in a couple times at the top, when it's supposed to be CARLOS Sanchez.

As my my opinions on some of the ratings you have.

                            Player - Your grade/My Grade
Chris Beck - (B-/B): He was a top 5 pick before he put on too much muscle last year, he is on a new program, and has said to have gotten his velocity back up already. Could EASILY be the best pitching prospect in the system.
                            Brennan - (B-/C+)
                            Andre Rienzo - (C+/B-):
I actually don't have a great reason for this, I just happen to think Rienzo came in to the org. so raw from Brazil and has made great strides, and his numbers were fantastic in 2012.
Joey DiMichele - (C+/B-): DiMichele has actually been considered by some scouts as our best IF prospect, in terms of MLB future. They love his skill set, I think while Carlos Sanchez is more advanced, DiMichele has an equally as high ceiling.

No sir...he meant Angel Sanchez. He's a Rule 5 Draft pick from the Angels. Expected to be the backup infielder.
